Courteney Cox Sold Her Laurel Canyon Home Because It Was Haunted

On Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night (February 28th), Courteney Cox shared a spooky story about the house the used to live in. While Cox has previously said that she relates to her character in Shining Vale for "going through a midlife crisis" and going through menopause, it turns out there's another reason.

Cox told Kimmel, "I lived in this house in Laurel Canyon, which is in L.A., obviously, and it was Gypsy Rose Lee's house and Carole King … So Carole King came over to my house and she said that there had been a divorce, that was really ugly, and there was a ghost in the house. And I was, like, yeah, whatever. But other people who would stay there with me, like friends of mine, said they felt an encounter with a woman who was sitting on the edge of the bed. And I was, like, yeah, whatever."

She added that she and King even did a séance but she "didn't listen to a word" because she was so in awe of King.

Then Cox said, "I was at the house one day not being a believer. The doorbell rang. It was a UPS guy, or something, and I opened the door and he said 'Do you know this house is haunted?' And I go, 'Yeah, why? Why do you think that? And he goes, 'Because there is someone standing behind you.' And I was like, let's sell."

Kimmel responded, "What a terrible, terrible UPS guy. Why would you say that to somebody?"

Cox added that she "couldn't sleep there alone ever again."

Shining Vale premieres Sunday, March 6th on STARZ.

Naya Rivera's Family Settles Wrongful Death Suit

Naya Rivera's family has settled their wrongful death suit nearly two years after the Glee star's tragic drowning. Rivera's ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, filed the suit in November 2020 on behalf of their son, Josey, who is now six years old.

The family's lawyer, Amjad M. Khan, said in a statement, "Through this settlement, Josey will receive just compensation for having to endure the drowning of his beloved mother at Lake Piru."

"Though the tragic loss of Josey's mother can never truly be overcome, we are very pleased that the monetary settlement will significantly assist Josey with his life beyond this tragedy," Khan continued.

Dorsey and Rivera's estate sued Ventura County, California, arguing that Rivera's death was preventable. Rivera accidentally drowned while taking a boat out on the water with her son at Lake Piru in July 2020. The lawsuit argued that the boat she rented from Lake Piru "did not have the proper features and equipment necessary to comply with U.S. Coast Guard safety standards."

The suit also cited the lake's "deadly history," as Rivera is among more than two dozen people who have drowned in Lake Piru since 1959.

The court documents claimed there wasn't "a single sign anywhere — not at the entrance, at the dock, at the popular swimming area of Diablo Cove, not anywhere — warning of the lake's strong currents, low visibility, high winds, changing water depths, underwater caves, ledges and drop offs, or the trees, brush and other debris that congest its waters due to the vastly changing water levels and winds."

"Finally @thebatman premiere. I'm so beyond proud of you @zoeisabellakravitz all my aloha to @adamweitsman and @daveophilly for making this happen at the last minute. mahalo @wbpictures for the invite," he continued.

Momoa married Kravitz's mother, Lisa Bonet, in 2017, though the pair publicly announced that they were splitting last month. And while Tatum and Kravitz have never publicly announced that they're in a relationship, People confirmed that they are dating.

The Batman is slated to hit theaters on March 4th.

Laverne Cox really went there with Jada Pinkett Smith on Sunday (February 27th). The Orange is the New Black star was an E! News correspondent for the SAG red carpet event, and she definitely had some fun with it.

When talking with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Cox said, "Thank you for all the years of joy you've brought us. We can't wait for more Red Table Talk and more ... entanglements."

In 2020, Pinkett Smith revealed that she was seeing singer August Alsina while she and her husband were separated. At the time, she referred to the relationship as an "entanglement."

Samuel L. Jackson Comments On Joe Rogan's Use Of The N-Word

Samuel L. Jackson isn't buying Joe Rogan's apology for using the N-word. In a recent interview with The Times, Jackson said, "He is saying nobody understood the context when he said it. But he shouldn't have said it. It's not the context, dude — it's that he was comfortable doing it. Say that you're sorry because you want to keep your money, but you were having fun and you say you did it because it was entertaining."

Rogan posted a five-minute apology to Instagram on February 5th after singer Indie Arie released a compilation of the podcaster repeatedly using the word.

In his interview with The Times, Jackson also segued into Quentin Tarantino's use of the word. "It needs to be an element of what the story is about. A story is context — but just to elicit a laugh? That's wrong. Every time someone wants an example of overuse of the N-word, they go to Quentin — it's unfair. He's just telling the story and the characters do talk like that. When Steve McQueen does it with 12 Years a Slave, it's art. He's an artiste. Quentin's just a popcorn filmmaker," he said.

Along these lines, the Pulp Fiction actor also told Esquire in 2019, "You can't just tell a writer he can't talk, write the words, put the words in the mouths of the people from their ethnicities, the way that they use their words. You cannot do that, because then it becomes an untruth; it's not honest. It's just not honest."

The 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards

On Sunday night (February 27th) the 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aired on TNT and TBS. “Together again” was the theme of the show, and for the third year in a row, there was no host.

Nicholas Braun, Javier Bardem, and Elle Fanning kicked off the evening with individual “I am an actor” stories. Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, and Leslie Odom Jr. followed suit, only they all ended up talking over one another. “I think, in a time like this, the star of the show should go first,” Diggs said, causing the trio to talk over one another again—until the music sounded and cued them to wrap it up.

A little later, Odom Jr. delivered a more serious message for the people of Ukraine. “We’re holding a place in our hearts for Ukraine and sending our thoughts, prayers and hopes for impending peace,” he said.

Ted Lasso, Squid Game, and CODA were all the big winners of the evening.

Troy Kotsur made history as the first deaf actor to win an individual SAG award for Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in CODA. In his acceptance speech, Kotsur thanked SAG, the producers, the cast, his wife and daughter, and Apple TV+ for “believing in us deaf actors and casting us authentically as actors who happen to be deaf.” The CODA cast was also chosen for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Squid Game stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon each won their first SAG award for Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series.

Jason Sudeikis won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his work in Ted Lasso, and the cast of the show took home the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series award.

Helen Mirren was honored with the Life Achievement Award, presented by both Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett. Winslet appeared over Zoom, and Blanchett joked that “they got another Cate” to give Mirren the award in person. Of Mirren, Winslet said, "She continues to fly the flag for women above the age of 45 … She confirms what we hope would one day be recognized in this industry — that women just get better with age." Following a montage of the wide range of performances Mirren has embodied throughout her career, The Queen actress threw some jokes into her acceptance speech. “I hate to say the word SAG at my age. It’s always S-A-G for me.” She then thanked the actors, saying, “Together we laugh, we worry, we change clothes, we throw up, and we suffer diarrhea. Don't you? I mean, I do."

The evening’s presenters included Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens, Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn, Selena Gomez and Martin Short, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, and more.

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino also got “together again” in a superb flashback of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. The pair walked onstage together in pantsuits that matched their outfits in the movie, with Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” playing, to present Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. In addition to pulling out a post-it, Sorvino said, “I just realized this: We’re wearing great ensembles while at the same time presenting to great ensembles.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal quoted Hamlet before honoring the actors we’ve lost, including Sidney Poitier, Betty White, Bob Saget, Louie Anderson, Olympia Dukakis, and many more.

Michael Keaton left Salma Hayek hanging onstage before accepting his award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his role in Dopesick. “Are you kidding me? I have stage fright.” Hayek said. After running to the stage, Keaton relayed that he was in the bathroom, and that “it was packed.” The actor broke into tears while accepting his award, dedicating it to his late nephew Michael and his sister Pam. "Mostly, given the subject matter, this is for my nephew Michael and my sister Pam. I lost my nephew Michael to drugs, and it hurts," he said.

Lastly, Will Smith won his first SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in King Richard. "That may have been one of the greatest moments of my career just now because my name was called for King Richard sitting next to Venus Williams and her sister," he said.

Amanda Bynes' Parents Support Her Ending Her Conservatorship

Last week, Amanda Bynes filed court documents to end her nine-year conservatorship, a move that Page Six reports is supported by her parents.

Bynes was placed under a conservatorship by her mother, Lynn Bynes, in August 2013. At the time, the Amanda Show actress was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold for allegedly starting a fire in an elderly woman’s driveway.

In November 2014, Bynes tweeted that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Bynes has maintained a positive relationship with her parents, and her lawyer said that she and her parents see the “significant progress” she’s made in managing her diagnosis. Her lawyer added that the conservatorship was only ever meant to be temporary.

John Mulaney Jokes About His Intervention During Saturday Night Live Monologue

During his fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live over the weekend, comedian John Mulaney dove straight into his personal life following “a complicated year,” as he called it.

In December 2020, Mulaney said he went to a friend’s house for dinner. “It was not dinner, it was an intervention for me. My least favorite kind of intervention," he said.

"I knew right away it was an intervention. You know how bad a drug problem you have to have if when you open a door and see people gathered, your first thought is, 'This is an intervention about my drug problem. There’s no other reason people would be behind a door.'”

Mulaney was in rehab from December to February 2021, and he “broke up” with his drug dealers via text during this time. He relayed that one of his drug dealers was a painter who only got drugs for Mulaney because he was “worried” about him and wanted to prevent him from getting something worse off the street.

"I like that story because there are many tales of drug dealers who have turned innocent people into drug addicts. I might be the first drug addict to turn an innocent man into a drug dealer," Mulaney joked.

Of his 12-week-old son, Malcom, whom he shares with Olivia Munn, Mulaney said, “His legs are like little calzones, and I want to eat them." He added that, “Life is a lot better and happier now.”

Maksim Chmerkovskiy Calls Out Kirstie Alley For Tweet About The War In Ukraine

Dancing with the Stars alum Maksim Chmerkovskiy called out his former partner, Kirstie Alley, over a tweet she posted on the war in Ukraine.

In the since-deleted tweet, Alley wrote, “I don’t know what’s real or what is fake in this war. So I won’t be commenting. I’ll pray instead.”

Chmerkovskiy, who has been sharing updates from the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, took to Instagram to address Alley’s words. He wrote in his stories, “Dear Kirstie, We haven’t spoken in a while, but I clearly remember being right next to you while you were organizing trucks of aid during hurricane Sandy and I remember all that you were saying to me about situations where innocent are suffering. That same energy is needed right now.”

“No one needs your prayer if you don’t know what’s real or fake,” he added.

In a video posted to Instagram on Saturday (February 26th), Chmerkovskiy assured fans that he’s safe, but that he’s in the “eye of the storm.” He asked viewers to “please make your voice be heard and just spread the word that this needs to pause.”

Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Receive NAACP President's Award

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry received the President's Award at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday (February 26th).

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were recognized for their work with the Archewell Foundation, which the pair launched in 2020.

In the couple’s acceptance speech, Markle said, “It's inspiring to think about the legacy of the Image Awards, which began shortly after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed into law. Today, we can continue that legacy by re-establishing federal voting protections in our country and fulfilling the work of civil rights giants, like the late John Lewis.”

Harry added, "Before I begin, we would like to acknowledge the people of Ukraine, who urgently need our continued support as a global community. I also echo the immense gratitude for tonight, both for this award and this community for welcoming me so warmly. I think it's safe to say that I come from a very different background from my incredible wife, yet our lives were brought together for a reason. We share a commitment to a life of service, a responsibility to combat injustice and a belief that the most often overlooked are the most important to listen to."

Markle followed this, saying, "And I couldn't be prouder that we're doing this work together. We moved to California, my home state, shortly before the murder of George Floyd. For Black America, those nine minutes and 29 seconds transcended time, invoking centuries of our unhealed wounds. In the months that followed, as my husband and I spoke with the civil rights community, we committed ourselves and our organization, Archewell, to illuminating those who are advancing racial justice and progress."

Maksim Chmerkovsky Shares Videos From Ukraine

Maksim Chmerkovsky shared multiple videos Thursday (Feb. 24th) morning from the center of Kyiv, Ukraine, where he's been filming a project called World of Dance UA.

The Ukrainian-born, former Dancing With the Stars pro spoke over the sounds of sirens as he explained that he didn't believe things would escalate as quickly as they did.

He wrote in the captions, "I will never be the same. This is stressful and I'm getting old feelings back, like I've done this before. This does feel like the way it was when and why we left in the 90s. Like my old PTSD I've finally fixed is coming back. I literally only just forgot about those 'always on the edge' feelings and actually started worrying about things like bbq grills."

In a second clip, the dancer announced that he wants to go back home to the United States and choked up thinking about his friends who cannot escape.

He addressed his Russian fans before heading to a bomb shelter, saying, "I think the Russians need to get up and actually say something, because no one's opinion is being heard. This is all one man's ambition of something, and however convenient it sounds in Moscow, however comfortable you are where you are in Russia, I just don't think this is the right thing."

Bill Paxton's Family Reaches $1 Million Settlement With Anesthesiologist

Bill Paxton's widow and children have reached a $1 million partial settlement of their wrongful-death lawsuit with the anesthesiologist who treated the Big Love star two weeks prior to his death.

Deadline reports that Dr. Moody Makar and General Anesthesia Specialists Partnership filed court papers Wednesday (Feb. 23rd) in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking approval of the accord between the Paxton family members and the company.

According to court documents, General Anesthesia Specialists' lawyers said the company "denies liability in this matter" but said the settlement deal will "reasonably compensate plaintiffs and avoid exposing defendant to an expensive and time consuming litigation."

The actor's death certificate states he died of a stroke on Feb. 25th, 2017, 11 days after surgery to replace a heart valve and repair aorta damage. He was 61.

A trial date for the remainder of the lawsuit, against Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Ali Khoynezhad, is scheduled for September 19th.
