Peter Gabriel Talks About Watching Final Genesis Gig

Last year, fans were both excited and disapointed that although Peter Gabriel was in the audience for the final Genesis concert -- he held off from joining his former-bandmates onstage. This week marks the one-year anniversary of the band's last gig, held on March 26th, 2022 at London's O2 Arena.

During a chat with Uncut to promote his upcoming album, titled I/O, Gabriel was asked about watching the gig in the audience: "Ultimately, there were human relationships underneath. With Tony (Banks) and Mike (Rutherford), these were people I was at school with, when I was 13-years-old. There's a lot of history there. It was lovely to see Phil (Collins) again, even though he wasn't as strong as I remember him. But it brought back a lot of memories. I was very glad I was there. I had been there at the beginning, so I should be there at the end."

He went on to say, "I don't see them very often, but I enjoy my relationships with those guys. I love the freedom of being able to do what I want, when I want, how I want. That's fine to give up on a particular project, but as a state of living, I don't want to be having arguments again."

Peter Gabriel passed on attending Genesis' 2010 induction due to being in the middle of rehearsals for an upcoming tour. At the time we caught up with Tony Banks and asked him if the band felt slighted that Gabriel wouldn't be accepting the honor alongside the rest of Genesis: "He rang up and said, 'Look, y'know everyone's going to say I'm trying to snub you . . . and all the rest of it,' I said, 'Well, you just tell them we didn't want you to come, so we're snubbing you, y'know?' No -- it's none of those things at all. I mean, it would've been lovely if he could've come, but I understand his problems. It is very difficult, he's right in the middle of something and (if) he takes a day out, and the flying and everything involved, and his voice and he's supposed to be doing stuff. . . I mean, it's a fair-enough thing but it would've been nice for him to come because this is for the group through all its periods, y'know rather than just being just the latter part. Then, obviously Peter's a vital part of that, and he should be there."

Hollywood Vampires Releasing First Live Album In June

Set for release on June 2nd is Hollywood Vampires' first live album, titled, Live In Rio. The band, which features Alice Cooper, Aerosmith's Joe Perry, and Johnny Depp, was captured live back in 2015 -- only days after the release of their debut album -- performing in front of a whopping 100,000 fans.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported the collection includes such Alice Cooper standards as "School's Out" and "Billion Dollar Babies" along with covers of the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar," the Who's "My Generation" and "I'm A Boy," T. Rex's "Jeepster," the Doors' "Five To One," Spirit's "I Got A Line On You," the Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Manic Depression," and John Lennon's "Cold Turkey" -- with Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale joining the band for a take on Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love."

Alice Cooper told us that opposed to his infamous image back in the 1970's -- he hasn't been considered dangerous or outside the mainstream for years: "I'll be walking down the street -- 'Hey, Coop! How's it going, man? How's the game? How's your swing? Hey, love the album!' I used to be the outer fringe. I think 'Alice' now is woven in as much as Simon & Garfunkel, as much as Tom Petty, as much as anybody that's in the fabric of American music. I'm Americana."

Flashback: REO Speedwagon Hits Number One With 'Keep On Loving You'

It was 42 years ago today (March 21st, 1981) that REO Speedwagon first hit Number One with "Keep On Loving You." The single was the first to be issued from the band's ninth album, Hi Infidelity, and replaced Eddie Rabbitt's "I Love A Rainy Night" at the spot for a single week before being toppled a week later by Blondie's "Rapture."

Hi Infidelity hit Number One on February 21st, 1981 ending John Lennon & Yoko Ono's eight-week run with Double Fantasy. The album stayed at Number One for 15 nonconsecutive weeks, spent 30 weeks in the Billboard Top 10, and was on the Billboard 200 album chart for a total of 101 weeks -- an unprecedented feat for an American rock band at the time. Three more singles were pulled from Hi Infidelty -- "Take It On The Run" (#5), "Don't Let Go" (#25), and "In Your Letter" (#20).

Hi Infidelity was the best-selling rock LP of 1981 and has sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. since its release. REO Speedwagon returned to Number One in 1985 with the three-week chart-topper, "I Can't Fight This Feeling."

In concert, REO Speedwagon covers most of its hits -- including a healthy dose from Hi Infidelity. Bandleader and frontman Kevin Cronin told us that forget about the band painstakingly crafting their masterpiece -- the only game plan behind the album was to not get dumped by their record label: "Basically, we were in the studio and we had the guillotine hanging above our necks. Y'know, the record company was like, 'Something better happen (laughs) with this next record, or you guys are history,' y'know? Pretty much every record we made, we were on the brink of having our contract canceled. But looking back on it, it probably helped motivate us in some way."

Cronin explained that Hi Infidelity remains one of those key albums in rock that managed to seep into everyone's musical DNA at precisely the same time: "The record just got under people's skin; and I was saying that anyone who was in junior high through college in 1981, y'know, people couldn't help but have this record kind of drilled into 'em -- whether they (laughed) liked it or not. And so for us to kind of look back fondly and with humor and think back (to) what we were going through, that seems surreal because I remember it so vividly as though it were last week, or something."

REO Speedwagon performs tonight (March 21st) at Bemidji, Minnesota's Sanford Center.

Woman Immortalized On 'Woodstock' Soundtrack Cover Dies

Bobbi Ercoline, the woman who appeared hugging her future husband on the cover of the Woodstock movie soundtrack has died, according to Best Classic Bands. She and then-boyfriend Nick Ercoline, were cuddling under a quilt when the iconic photo was shot by Life magazine photographer Burk Uzzle, and the couple remained unaware of it until they saw they later saw the Woodstock album cover. The pair married in 1971.

Nick Ercoline posted a message on Facebook, which reads:

It's with beyond great sadness that I tell my FB family and friends, that after 54 years of life together, of the death of my beautiful wife, Bobbi, last night surrounded by her family. She lived her life well, and left this world in a much better place. If you knew her, you loved her. She lived by her saying, 'Be kind.' As a School Nurse she always championed the kids … ALWAYS! As a person, she always gave. 'How much do you really need if you have all you need or want?' So she gave and gave and gave. She didn't deserve this past year's nightmare, but she isn't suffering from the physical pain anymore and that brings some comfort to us.

Back in 2009, photographer Burk Uzzle recalled taking the shot of the unsuspecting couple, telling Smithsonian magazine, saying, "Gracie Slick of Jefferson Airplane was singing, bringing up the dawn. And just magically this couple stood up and hugged. They kissed, smiled at each other, and the woman leaned her head on the man's shoulder. I just had time to get off a few frames of black and white and a few of color, then the light was over and the mood was over."

Bono And The Edge Are Fans Of Abba And Cover 'S.O.S.'

During a performance on BBC Radio 2, Bono let everyone know that he and U2 are all big fans of ABBA. He said "I didn't have the courage to own up to it when I was 16 and in the middle of punk rock." He went on to thank ABBA for their music.

And before doing a slow version of "S.O.S." The Edge called them "great songwriters," and said their music "grew on him over the years."

Duran Duran Reuniting With Andy Taylor For New Album

Duran Duran's John Taylor revealed the band is reuniting with co-founding guitarist Andy Taylor for their next album. Andy was absent from the band's Rock Hall inductions last year and revealed he has been battling stage 4 prostate cancer for five years. John Taylor told MSN.com, "When he dropped the bomb two days before the Hall of Fame, it was really shocking and terribly sad. We're working on an album right now that is going to be coming out at the end of the year and he's playing guitar."

Andy Taylor was in Duran Duran throughout its original classic run through 1985 and a brief reunion in the 2000's.

John explained that had Andy actually showed up for the Rock Hall event, which led him to reveal his diagnosis, the reunion would probably never have come to pass: "Had he come to L.A. and just gone on the TV show, we probably wouldn't have even thought about it. That (the album) happened as a result of this. There's a lot of cover songs on the album, songs meaningful to us when we were kids. So having him be a part of that project is great. (Simon) LeBon is flying to Ibiza to work with Andy. I kind of wish I was there. I think it'll be great. It'll be really profound for them. They haven't been in the studio together in maybe 10 to 20 years."

John Taylor added that a documentary of the sessions might be in the works, saying, "Somebody will have an iPhone on it."

During his early-2000's stint in the band, Andy Taylor explained that Duran Duran always tried to embody the best of British pop: "That, sort of, British pop culture, it still happens in our country but doesn't export as much today. For some reason, British music doesn't export in the same volume and people don't have the same love for our culture now. Not just in this country but all over the world. It has demised in that sense, so we do, sort of, feel that we are flying the flag a bit for what's best about British."

Duran Duran's next North American date is set for May 27th at the BottleRock festival in Napa Valley, California.

Def Leppard Goes Orchestral For 'Drastic Symphonies'

Def Leppard is going the orchestral route on May 19th with the release of their latest album, titled, Drastic Symphonies, featuring, "tracks dramatically reimagined by London's iconic Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" -- along with new vocals and instrumentation from the band.

Frontman Joe Elliott said in the album's official announcement, "When the offer to revisit some of our back catalogue with the Royal Philharmonic was presented to us, we all jumped at it. Although we're far from the first band to ever do this, working directly with an orchestra at Abbey Road on some of our more orchestrated songs seemed too good of an opportunity to pass up."

Guitarist Phil Collen added: "We decided to create something special where we would have something classic but present it in a brand new way that would involve making everything work in the context of Drastic Symphonies. Recording new parts, remixing previous sounds, taking some of our instruments out so the orchestra could breathe, and literally making a new album."

Joe Elliott remains amazed that bands with multi-decade histories are still able to move sizable numbers of new records and pack arenas and stadiums across the globe: "We were in the front end of a whole new way of doin' this and we're lucky that we've stayed together to be able to exploit that and enjoy it and all that kind of stuff. But even when we got together, we thought (we'd be around) maybe five or 10 years -- because that's all there was. There was an eight-year-old Led Zeppelin when we formed. The Beatles had only been split for seven, the Rolling Stones and the Who were essentially, maybe, 13, 14-years-old. So, there was no band that was around for 40 years. So, it's insane when you say it off the top of your head just like that."

Def Leppard and Motley Crue kick off their next set of joint North American dates on August 5th in Syracuse, New York at JMA Wireless Dome.

The tracklist to Def Leppard's upcoming Drastic Symphonies is:

"Turn To Dust"
"Paper Sun"
"Animal"
"Pour Some Sugar On Me (Stripped version)"
"Hysteria"
"Love Bites"
"Goodbye For Good This Time"
"Love"
"Gods Of War"
"Angels (Can't Help You Now)"
"Bringin' On the Heartbreak"
"Switch 625"
"Too Late For Love"
"When Love & Hate Collide"
"Kings Of The World"
"Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad" - vinyl and Blu-Ray bonus track

Chrissie Hynde & Courtney Love Slam The Rock Hall

Both Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and Courtney Love have taken time out to slam the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Love, who posted a sprawling op-ed in London's The Observer, lambasted the institution for its lack of diversity regarding women and minorities -- with Hynde just reminding fans how lame she thought the Rock Hall was and remains.

Love, who has been eligible for induction with Hole since 2016, posted, in part:

If so few women are being inducted into the Rock Hall, then the nominating committee is broken. If so few Black artists, so few women of color, are being inducted, then the voting process needs to be overhauled. Music is a lifeforce that is constantly evolving – and they can't keep up. Shame on HBO for propping up this farce.

If the Rock Hall is not willing to look at the ways it is replicating the violence of structural racism and sexism that artists face in the music industry, if it cannot properly honor what visionary women artists have created, innovated, revolutionized and contributed to popular music -- well, then let it go to hell in a handbag.

Chrissie Hynde, who was inducted into the Rock Hall as part of the Pretenders back in 2005 posted on Facebook:

If anyone wants my position in the rock ‘n' roll Hall of Fame they are welcome to it. I don't even wanna be associated with it. It's just more establishment backslapping. I got in a band so I didn't have to be part of all that.

I was living a happy life in Rio when I got the call I was being inducted. My heart sank because I knew I'd have to go back for it as it would be too much of a kick in the teeth to my parents if I didn't. I'd upset them enough by then, so it was one of those things that would bail me out from years of disappointing them (like moving out of the USA and being arrested at PETA protests and my general personality).

Other than Neil Young's participation in the induction process, the whole thing was, and is, total bollocks.

It's absolutely nothing to do with rock ‘n' roll and anyone who thinks it is is a fool.

At the time of the Pretenders' Rock Hall induction Chrissie Hynde admitted that she was somewhat ambivalent about the honor: "Well y'know for me, I felt I was recognized because I got to be in a rock n' roll band. I didn't really want any more. I didn't want the fame particularly, I don't really like to be very big, I feel like we represent the losers in the world, y'know, I like to stay in the dark, I don't like too much exposure."

Thorngren, who also mixed the original release.

Highlights on the set features such Talking Heads favorites as "Psycho Killer," "Burning Down The House," "Take Me To The River," "Life During Wartime," and "Once In A Lifetime," among others.

Bandleader David Byrne told us a while ago that reliving the group's career required a bit of attitude adjustment for him: "I kinda had to set aside time for it -- psychological time, not just hours -- 'cause I knew that, 'OK, you're (laughs) gonna be delving into the past. Just allow yourself that kind of mental space.' And know that, kind of, 'OK, you'll get through it, and you can return to the present.'"

Flashback: John & Yoko Marry

It was 54 years ago today (March 20th, 1969) that John Lennon and Yoko Ono married in Gibraltar -- only eight days after Paul McCartney wed first wife Linda Eastman in London. Directly after the wedding, the couple opened up their hotel room to the world's press during their Amsterdam honeymoon, and launched their first "Bed In" for peace.

The couple had met in London in 1966 at one of Ono's avant garde art shows and became romantically linked sometime between mid-1967 and mid-1968. By the spring of 1968, the pair, whom Lennon took to calling "Johnandyoko," began a long-standing artistic partnership with the recording of their debut album, called Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins. The album included experimental sounds recorded in Lennon's home studio and featured an album cover showing them nude.

Yoko says that throughout the years, Lennon was always easy to work with: "When I was an avant garde artist, already I was a control freak, okay? And John understood it. John was a very good person to work with, a good husband as well, y'know, in that sense. A good partner, that he would allow me to be myself kind of thing."

George Harrison's first wife Pattie Boyd says that the days of all the Beatle wives being a close-knit group pretty much ended with Yoko entering the inner circle: "John fell in love with Yoko and that was that. She was more a man's woman than a woman's woman. She would never have girlfriends, I don't think, anyway. Y'know that was fine, so I knew I'd never get close to her. She was quite friendly toward me. I mean, she and John once stayed in our house and she was just so intent on John all the time. John was her only focus, really and truly."

John Lennon recalled that linking with Yoko as his partner ultimately meant that his days as a Beatle were fading fast: "But I presumed that I would just be able to carry on and bring Yoko into our lives, but it seemed I had to be married to them or Yoko. And I chose Yoko. y'know? And I was right."

Although Paul McCartney has never blamed Yoko for the Beatles' split, he explained that Lennon ultimately chose his work with her to be the outlet needed to fully liberate his creativity: "It was very difficult for me. Yeah, it was my whole life, I think the others in their minds. . . I think John was lucky 'cause he got this new direction now with Yoko. I think John, all his life had wanted to cut loose. He'd been an art student, he sort of buckled down for the Beatles -- 'cause it was democratic, (and) I think he wanted to cut loose, he wanted to do all these things he'd read about artists in books doing and I think Yoko gave him that opportunity. And a lot of what they did together was very fine stuff, but I think when it came to the Beatles, it meant that he kinda had to leave the group. He couldn't do it within the group."

During a 2012 chat with the late-David Frost, McCartney spoke about Yoko's influence on Lennon: "I think John, in particular, was ready to do something else. When Yoko came along, part of her attraction, I think, was this, sort of, avant garde side of things, which she was famous for -- and still is. So, she showed him another way to be that was very attractive to him -- and I could see that. Y'know, she just sort of said, 'Well, no, look -- how 'bout this? Don't you like this? Are you just a rock and roller?'"

John and Yoko shared an intense and symbiotic relationship, and after five years of non-stop time together in which they recorded, performed, and worked together on various political and creative pursuits, they separated for 14 months.

Upon reconciling in January 1975, Ono became pregnant, and on October 9th, 1975, which was Lennon's 35th birthday, she gave birth to the couple's only child, Sean Taro Ono Lennon.

After Lennon's murder on December 8th, 1980, Ono inherited complete control of the Lennon estate and has commemorated most of his posthumous birthdays with numerous projects, including previously unreleased music, a radio show, an album of interviews, and a clothing and housewares line, to a mixed response from fans.

According to numerous reports, in 2020, her son, Sean Lennon, was officially appointed a director at eight companies linked to Yoko and the Beatles -- including the group's company, Apple Corp. Sean has also joined the board of Lensolo, which administers his father's solo works.

Yoko Ono, who just recently turned 90, has been wheelchair-bound for several years, is rumored to have suffered from a stroke, although no illness has been publicly revealed.

Streaker Interrupts Avril Lavigne During Juno Awards Broadcast

Viewers of Canada's Juno Awards got a big surprise this week, as a streaker walked on stage while Avril Lavigne was introducing an act.

Wearing pink pants and a matching pink bandana, a topless woman calmly walked onstage, with phrases like "Land Back" and "Save the Green Belt," written all over her body in black marker. Apparently protesting a highly controversial development deal in Canada's greenbelt region.

At first, Lavigne tried to ignore her, then finally turned and yelled, "Get the f**k off," and with a laugh, she flicked the protestor's breast and said it again. It was at about that point during the broadcast that a security guard finally walked calmly on stage and lead the woman away.
