The Rolling Stones Releasing 1977 ''El Mocambo' Club Gig In May

At long last Rolling Stones fans will be able to listen to the band's legendary and infamous 1977 El Mocambo club show without shelling out big bucks for bootlegs or downloading dubious recordings offline. On May 13th, the band will finally release release Live At The El Mocambo as a two-CD, quadruple-LP, and digital set.

The collection features the entire March 4th, 1977 club show -- with a trio of tunes from the March 5th gig not performed the previous night. Although four selections from the famed El Mocambo gigs found their way onto that year's double concert album, Love You Live, the tapes of the show -- in varying quality -- have made the rounds on the underground for decades

Guitarist Ron Wood explained that ultimately his favorite type of Stones shows are their club gigs: "The clubs, obviously, everybody's hot -- it's rocking, it's steaming, and, y'know, it's rock n' roll, and anything goes. But you have to tighten up your act for the scrutiny of the people more in an arena, and even in stadiums, because you're the object of close scrutiny--whereas in the club, people can just let their hair down and just go with it."

The full tracklisting to The Stones' Live At The El Mocambo is:

"Honky Tonk Women"
"All Down The Line"
"Hand Of Fate"
"Route 66"

The Who Acoustic: An Understated Triumph

The Who, led by Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, played their first show together since the pandemic, scaling things back on Friday night (March 25th) to perform an acoustic set at London's Royal Albert Hall in support of their patron charity, the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The pair was backed by Pete's younger brother and longtime Who touring guitarist Simon Townshend, Phil Spalding, Jody Linscott, Billy Nicholls, Geraint Watkins, Charlie Hart, and Andy Cutting.

The acoustic band set up is definitely still a work in progress, with Townshend joking the group had only rehearsed two hours for the charity gig. And although there were various re-starts and muffed lyrics, the show proved to be one of the band's most unique and interesting of the past decade.

The Who performed its 2004 modern classic "Real Good Looking Boy" for the first time since 2008, tackled three songs from 2019's WHO album -- including the live premiere of "Beads On One String," which was dedicated to the citizens of Ukraine. The shows marked the first live performances of Roger Daltrey singing Pete Townshend's 1980 solo hit "Let My Love Open The Door" -- which he had recorded in aid of the Trust, as well as taking the lead on the Townshend-sung It's Hard standout "Eminence Front."

We asked Roger Daltrey if while listening to Pete Townshend's early-'80s solo albums, he heard other songs that he felt he easily could've done justice to: "Yeah. 'Slit Skits,' 'Stardom In Acton,' I mean, so many. But I understood why it was happening. I totally understood it. I know exactly what went on there, y'know?"

Pete Townshend, who has played a few promotional gigs acoustically with only him and Daltrey -- feels a full duo show would throw their respective comfort zones off track: "We do often feel like half a band. I kind of resist the idea of being. . . this sounds horrible, but it's the only way I can describe it; I kind of resist the idea of being Roger's accompanist. Alternatively, I'm sure he would resist the idea of being my straight man. Do you know what I mean? If we ever did a Bruce Springsteen-type show, for example, where we played music and we talked about our story, we would both definitely get laughs -- but I might get them most."

The Who's acoustic setlist on Friday night at London 's Royal Albert Hall:

"Substitute"
"Squeeze Box"
"The Kids Are Alright"
"Tattoo"
"Behind Blue Eyes"
"Real Good Looking Boy"
"Break The News"
"She Rocked My World"
"Beads On One String"
"Eminence Front"
"Pinball Wizard"
"Who Are You"
"Let My Love Open The Door"
"Baba O'Riley"
"Won't Get Fooled Again"

Dua Lipa Is Halfway Done With Her Next Album

Dua Lipa's third album is "50 percent done."

The singer told Elton John on an episode of her Service95 podcast that the follow up to Future Nostalgia is "starting to feel good" and that it's about halfway finished.

She added, "It's starting to take shape. I'm very excited about some of the new songs, so it's always exciting to look forward towards something."

Olivia Rodrigo Goes Into Detail About The Breakup That Inspired 'Sour'

Olivia Rodrigo's new film all but confirms that Sour was inspired by her breakup with Joshua Bassett when she said she was forced to see the person who broke her heart every day after the split.

When Driving Home 2 U dropped on Disney+ Friday (March 25th), the "drivers license" singer called the still unconfirmed relationship and breakup with her High School Musical: The Musical: The Show costar the "heartbreak that kept on giving."

She added, "I was in this situation where I had to see him... he was with someone else which was devastating to me. It felt like my world was ending every single day."

    • Frantz wrote: "Incredibly, we walked away from the collision. Tina has been in a lot of pain but she will get better with time. I give thanks to our guardian angels and to the Ford Motor Company for building a car that protected us from getting killed." (Pitchfork)

  • Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer has taken a temporary leave of absence from the band. In a statement to USA Today, "(Kramer) regrettably made the decision to sit out the band's concerts in 2022 so he can focus his full attention on his family during these uncertain times. He and the band look forward to his future performances with Aerosmith." No specific reasons were given for why Kramer was staying off the road. (Rolling Stone)

Elton John Turns 75!!!

Happy Birthday to Elton John, who turns 75 today (March 25th)!!! Elton, who is back on the road with his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, performs on Saturday night (March 26th) at Des Moines, Iowa's Wells Fargo Arena.

Out now is Elton's latest album, The Lockdown Sessions, featuring 16 collaborations recorded in isolation and under strict covid safety protocols during the pandemic. The set features team-ups with Stevie Nicks, Eddie Vedder, Stevie Wonder, Miley Cyrus, Gorillaz, Young Thug and Nicki Minaj, Brandi Carlile, Dua Lipa, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo, Chad Smith, and others.

The album features the surprise hit "Cold Heart" -- his recent Top 10 smash with Australian artist Pnau.

The track mashes together such Elton favorites as 1972's "Rocket Man," 1989's "Sacrifice," 1983's "Kiss The Bride," and 1976's "Where's The Shoorah?"

Recently released is Elton John's latest box set, Jewel Box. The collection is broken up into four sections: "Deep Cuts," "Rarities," "B-Sides 1976-2005," and "This Is Me. . .", which features songs that were specifically name-checked into Elton's recent memoir, Me, and serving as a soundtrack to the book. Each section comes accompanied with extensive notes including a track-by-track commentary by Elton for 'Deep Cuts.'"

2020 saw its up's and down's for Elton, with a handful of shows being postponed after he contacted pneumonia. In February, Elton and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin won their first joint Oscar for "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" -- the theme to 2019's Rocketman biopic, which was sung with Elton's silver screen counterpart, Taron Egerton.

In October 2019, Elton published his autobiography, titled Me. The book, which was co-written by with music journalist Alexis Petridis, was a New York Times Bestseller.

Out now is Elton John & Ray Cooper Live From Moscow. The set, which commemorates the "Rocketman's" historic 1979 Russian two-man tour with percussionist Ray Cooper, was recorded live on May 28th, 1979 at Russia's Rossya Hotel Concert Hall, with the original BBC multi-track tapes newly remastered by Bob Ludwig.

Elton John says he's winding down his performing career because his family needs to come first in his life. Elton and David Furnish have been together since 1993, entered into a civil partnership in 2005, and married in 2014. They are the parents of two sons, 11-year-old Zachary and eight-and-a-half-year-old Elijah.

Elton explained why it was important for him to finally quit the road: "And, y'know, I always thought I was going to be like Ray Charles, B.B. King -- on the road forever. But once your life changes and you have the children; it has changed our life so much, and I love them so much -- and they'll be coming on part of this tour with us. We're going to take them out of school for nine months, with a tutor. I just wanna be there. When I stop, they're going to be 10 and eight and that's a very important time in their lives. I love them so much, I don't want to miss them and I don't want them to miss me."

Elton released his most recent all-original album, Wonderful Crazy Night, on February 5th, 2016. The set was co-produced by Elton and T-Bone Burnett and recorded at The Village in Los Angeles. The album, which features 12 new collaborations with lyricist Bernie Taupin, also includes Elton's legendary bandmates -- drummer Nigel Olson and guitarist Davey Johnstone, who although onstage with Elton every night, had not been featured on the "Rocket Man's" studio sessions since 2006's The Captain & The Kid. Also on board from the legendary '70s Elton John Band lineup is beloved percussionist, Ray Cooper.

Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, a suburb of London. John was playing piano at age three, and by the age of 11 he was studying at London's Royal Academy of Music. He later dropped out to work as a music publishing errand boy and play rock n' roll at night. John recorded and gigged with his early band Bluesology, and went on to back such legendary acts as Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and the Isley Brothers.

In 1967 he hooked up with aspiring lyricist Bernie Taupin and went on to form one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in rock history. By early 1971, Elton had cracked the American charts with "Your Song," which peaked at Number Eight, and became the first of his 25 Top 40 hits of the 1970's. In the '70s, John and Taupin turned out hit after hit, placing 25 singles in the top 40, 16 in the Top Ten, and sending six to Number One.

Of the 19 albums Elton released in the States during the 1970's, 15 went gold or platinum. His 1975 album Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy holds the distinction of being the first album to debut at Number One in the charts. A month after its release, on June 21st, 1975, Elton performed the album in its entirety at London's Wembley Stadium. Elton took the stage at the close of a mammoth outdoor rock concert, which featured the Beach Boys and the Eagles as the opening acts.

Elton John's classic singles include "Rocket Man," "Honky Cat," "Crocodile Rock," "Bennie And The Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "The Bitch Is Back," "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," "Daniel," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Island Girl," the duet "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Kiki Dee, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" with John Lennon, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "Little Jeannie," "I'm Still Standing," "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues," "Sad Songs (Say So Much)," "Candle In The Wind," "Can You Feel The Love Tonight," and many, many more.

Elton John told us that his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin has given him great strength and proved to be one of the strongest relationships in his life: "It's been a remarkable partnership in the fact that we've never broken up -- although it was rumored that we did break up -- we didn't, we just had a break from each other and wrote with other people. Y'know, you can't suffocate each other. And the fact that we're still writing, and loving writing with each other -- we root for each other. And too often in this business, people get jealous, y'know, people break up a great thing over the most stupid thing. And he's been my brother without the music, he's been my brother with the music. He became the 'Brown Dirt Cowboy,' I became 'Captain Fantastic'-- we lived out. . . y'know, that album was very prophetic, that's what we became"

Elton says that he thrived on the demands in the '70s to constantly write new material: "I was under contract to do two albums a year, and we did it, and we did separate singles, we did separate B-sides and it was fun. If you love writing songs, there's no reason why you cannot do that."

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) is one of the world's largest HIV grant-makers. With offices in New York and London, EJAF has raised more than $349 million for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS since its inception in 1992.

In the Americas, the EJAF invests approximately $7 million in more than 120 organizations every year, with half of this focused on the Southern U.S. and the Caribbean.

Elton's efforts do not stop at fundraising. In April 2002, the singer visited Capital Hill, where he told Congress the U.S. has the power to end the AIDS epidemic: "Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, the United States government is the biggest possible source of new funding for fighting AIDS. 40 million people are infected with HIV. Eight thousand people are dying every day. You have the power to end this epidemic. Please end it . . . please end it."

Bernie Taupin told us that although his and Elton's songs have become pop standards over the years, that shouldn't take away from the quality of the work: "First and foremost, we are good songwriters. And there's nothing wrong with writing a great song -- providing it retains elements of passion, and whatever. As long as its not just a surface thing. And I think these songs are very commercial and there's nothing wrong with being commercial, yet they are at the same time very passionate."

Elton says that from a very early age, his only objective was to work in some facet of the music business: "I honestly feel I couldn't have asked for a better life. I mean, I wanted to be involved in music -- whether it was working in a record store, whether it was working in a publisher's (office), whether it was writing. . . I didn't ever envisage being a singer, that happened by accident, but I just love what I do. As I've grown older, I love to play live much more. I feel much more comfortable with my own self, so being onstage is much more comfortable to me. I don't have to hide behind big glasses and costumes anymore."

With over 50 years under his belt as a world-class singer-songwriter-performer, we asked Elton John what continues to inspire him: "It's always about tomorrow and not the past. It's lovely to go and to look back, but I'm a person who looks forward. I'm more interested in what's going to happen next. I value the past and my career, and sometimes when I go back. I think, 'Oh, that's pretty good'-- but I'm all about what's going to happen next."

The Who Go Acoustic At Royal Albert Hall Tonight

The Who are back on the boards tonight (March 25th) for their first concert since the pandemic hit. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will front an acoustic band at London's Royal Albert Hall as part of the 2022 Teenage Cancer Trust concert.

The pair will be backed by Pete's younger brother and longtime Who touring guitarist Simon Townshend, Phil Spalding, Jodie Linscott, Billy Nicholls, Geraint Watkins, Charlie Hart, and Andy Cutting.

In the announcement of the Royal Albert Hall gig, Roger Daltrey explained, "Live music has been hit arduous by the pandemic and it has been notably irritating for me that we haven't been in a position to get artists on stage to lift cash for this vitally necessary trigger. But we haven't given up. The Who will be back on stage this year at the hall alongside some wonderful talent. After the last two unbelievably difficult years, young people with cancer deserve everything we can do for them."

For Roger Daltrey, his patronage of the Teenage Cancer Trust is merely payback for the teens that gave him a life in music: "We couldn't have done it without the support of teenagers. The whole of the rock business, the whole of -- generally the whole of the music business is founded on the backs of teenagers. It just makes so much sense that the music business, for instance, should get behind this, because we rely on them. I also saw the simplicity of the idea. The way the medicine works -- you're either a child or an adult. Now they kind of say, 'Well, we've got adolescent programs' -- but those adolescent programs in your country, go from 13 to 40. And of course, a 13-year-old hasn't got much in common at all with a 40-year-old."

FLASHBACK - 55 YEARS AGO TODAY

It was 55 years ago today (March 25th, 1967) that the Who made their U.S. live premiere. The band was booked to perform four mini-sets a day as part of New York disc jockey Murray The K's "Music In The Fifth Dimension" review at New York City's RKO 58th Street Theater.

In addition to the Who and Cream, the nine-day stand included sets by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, Wilson Pickett, along with single one-off performances by Phil Ochs, Simon & Garfunkel, the Blues Magoos, and the Young Rascals, among others.

Roger Daltrey admits that the Who and the U.S. have enjoyed a mutual love of one another since the band's 1967 New York City debut: "I've never ceased to be incredibly humbled by the affection shown by America to the Who. It's been an incredible relationship; our audience has been incredibly loyal. And it's great that you kind of get our music hopefully in the same way that we do. Y'know, I feel so passionate about (Pete) Townshend's music and what he wrote and it's standing in the big scheme of things. It seems to me that that's one thing that America gets as well -- they understand it too, they're as passionate about it as I am." (28 OC: . . . as I am)

Paul Simon Set For All-Star Grammy Salute

Paul Simon will be the latest artist to receive a massive Grammy salute. Rolling Stone reported the tribute concert billed as Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute To The Songs Of Paul Simon will take place on April 6th at L.A.'s Hollywood Pantages Theatre.

In addition to Simon, who'll be performing, others who've already signed on include Brandi Carlile, Brad Paisley, Billy Porter, Little Big Town, Rhiannon Giddens, Dave Matthews, Angélique Kidjo, Shaggy, Irma Thomas, and Trombone Shorty, with other acts still to be announced.

Tickets for the event go on sale this Saturday, March 26th at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET via Ticketmaster. Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute To The Songs Of Paul Simon will air on CBS later this year "with some additional pre-taped performances and appearances."

During a recent chat on Austin City Limits, Paul Simon spoke about the precarious state of the type of music created by singer-songwriters: "This kind of songwriting, which tells stories, has characters -- that came out of, really the singer-songwriter phenomenon in the '60s into the '70s. And then, as music changed it became more about disco and beat and it turned into punk into boy bands. . . The re-configuration of pop music, 'singer-songwriter' became less relevant, actually. People stopped listening to it. The form of it, the sound of it -- it just didn't sound like, of the moment, and so, it went away. But, I'm still writing out of that form."

50 Years Ago Today!!! America's 'A Horse With No Name' Hits Number One

It was 50 years ago today (March 25th, 1972) that America's "A Horse With No Name" became the band's first Number One hit. The tune, which was written by co-founder Dewey Bunnell, displaced Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold" from the top spot -- and couldn't stop some critics carping that America's hit was actually a pale imitation of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young.

Dewey Bunnell recalled to us his and bandmates Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek's early pre-fame High School days when the group was living overseas: "We were at a U.S. Air Force base in England -- that's where we met. And we had these kind of similar interests in the music world, and we knocked around London and saw all these great acts of the late-'60s and stuff going on there; the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park. It was just an exciting time."

Gerry Beckley told us in the early-'70s, both America and the Eagles broke down radio boundaries by being major acts that allowed two very distinct voices to represent the band on the airwaves: "We were in the same office with those guys at the start, and I remember after 'Take It Easy' there was some debate -- not everybody was sure that 'Witchy Woman' was the way to go, because it was Don singing. But because they did -- and it was very similar to what Dewey (Bunnell) and I did with 'A Horse With No Name' followed by 'I Need You' -- you right at the start establish this thing of there's going to be a variety of directions."

America went on to score a further six Top 10 hits -- with only 1975's "Sister Golden Hair" going all the way to Number One.

America performs tonight (March 25th) in Lowell, Massachusetts at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

EP From Dave Grohl's Fictional Thrash Band Expected Today

The music from Dave Grohl's fictional thrash band Dream Widow will be released as a digital EP today (March 25th), with physical formats coming at a later date. The Dream Widow music was featured prominently in the recent Foo Fighters horror comedy film, Studio 666, which is now available on demand.

Last month, Grohl -- as self proclaimed "f***ing '80s thrash-metal kid" told Rolling Stone he's been heavily influenced by the bands he worshiped back in the day: "I have my favorites. You'll hear a lot of those influences in 'Lacrimus dei Ebrius' (a 13-minute metal epic performed in the film) because for that song, I put maybe four or five of these sections together in this big, long thing."

Dave Grohl, who back in 2004, released his own all-star thrash project called Probot, told us a while back what attracted him to that sound: "All of this music had that passion and aggression and power and energy of the punk rock and the hardcore, but it was, the musicality was more established, and the songs were songs, and it was really interesting, and it had that power and vibe, but it was more sinister and kind of dark. So, I just started buying as many of these records as I could find."

45 Years Ago: Hall & Oates Go To Number One With 'Rich Girl'

It was 45 years ago Saturday (March 25th, 1977) that Daryl Hall & John Oates scored their first of six Number One hits, with "Rich Girl." The R&B-tinged tune was the second single pulled from the previous year's Bigger Than The Both Of Us collection, and ended Barbra Streisand's three-week run on top of the charts with "Love Theme From A Star Is Born ('Evergreen')."

"Rich Girl," which was solely written by Daryl Hall, was Hall & Oates' third Top 10 hit, following 1976's "Sara Smile," which went all the way to Number Four and the 1976 reissue of 1973's "She's Gone" which peaked at Number Seven.

All told, between 1976 and 1990, Hall & Oates would score a total of 29 Top 40 hits, including 16 Top Tens -- with such future chart-toppers as 1981's "Kiss On My List" and "Private Eyes," 1982's "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)," and "Maneater," along with 1984's "Out Of Touch." In 1985 British singer Paul Young snagged a Number One hit with a cover of Hall & Oates' 1980 Voices favorite, "Everytime You Go Away."

Daryl Hall explained how integral the "Philly Sound" was to Hall & Oates' development, which was particularly evident on "Rich Girl": "Before I worked with John (Oates), I worked with Gamble & Huff and Tommy Bell, and all those people who created what everybody knows as the 'Philadelphia Sound.' And John and I, sort of, our idea was to create our own version of it, you know, and we used elements of the sound of that city, and then combined some other elements that people weren't using. It was, y'know, extremely important, y'know, Philadelphia and our music are one and the same thing."

John Oates featuring Guthrie Trapp plays on Saturday night (March 26th) in Bethesda, Maryland at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club.

Daryl Hall with special guest Todd Rundgren will perform on April 1st at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University.

Flashback: Paul McCartney & Wings Release 'Wings At The Speed Of Sound'

It was 36 years ago today (March 25th, 1976) that Paul McCartney released his seventh solo album -- and fifth Wings release -- Wings At The Speed Of Sound. The album, which was the former-Beatle's fifth chart-topper, hit Number One on April 24th, 1976 and spent seven non-consecutive weeks at the top spot while McCartney was back in the States on his sold-out Wings Over America tour.

The album's lead single, "Silly Love Songs" spent a whopping five weeks on top of the Top 40 charts. Its followup, "Let 'Em In," also achieved saturation airplay, peaking at Number Three.

Back in 2014 a super-deluxe edition of the album was released as part of the ongoing McCartney Archives Collection. The Wings At The Speed Of Sound set includes a 112-page hardbound book, and features several outtakes -- including the long-rumored version of "Beware My Love" featuring Led Zeppelin's John Bonham on drums along with a DVD featuring previously unreleased 1976 footage of Wings in Venice, a new behind the scenes edit from Wings' 1976 Wembley shows, as well as the original music video for "Silly Love Songs."

Although Wings was a massively successful band across the globe, they were especially big in America. Between 1971 and 1980 the band scored 13 Top 10 singles -- six of them chart-toppers; and eight Top 10 albums -- including five straight Number Ones, with the final chart-topper, 1976's Wings Over America, being a triple-record set.

We asked Paul McCartney why Wings landed so large in the States: "We did bigger tours over there, I think, really. Simple as that. The records sold very well and the concerts we did over there, inevitably, had bigger venues, so we saw more people, we played to more people."

McCartney's main musical foil throughout the Wings era was Moody Blues co-founder and multi-instrumentalist Denny Laine. Laine admitted that despite the band's success, being an active member of top act like Wings is hardly as easy as it looks: "Well, there's a lot of pressure on you when you're in a band like Wings -- to come up with the goods, to be continually working. It's not like taking it easy and taking it at your own pace. Y'know you're out there and you've got to do what the public expects you to."

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo Says Song On New Album Was Inspired By Shakespeare

One song on the new Weezer album was directly inspired by Shakespeare. Lead singer, Rivers Cuomo saw a performance of Romeo and Juliet four years ago at the Ohio Shakespeare Festival, and afterwards wrote the song titled, "Opening Night."

In an interview with NPR, he talked about sitting under the stars, watching the production with his wife. He journaled about it and described the scene and then a few years later was reading over his notes and started the song.

"Opening Night," specifically mentions seeing "Romeo and Juliet" under the stars. The lyrics name Shakespearean characters from other plays such as Hamlet and Falstaff.

Weezer's current single is called "A Little Bit of Love," it's from their album, Spring. Sznz

TL;DR:

  • "Opening Night" was inspired by Shakespeare.
  • Lead singer, Rivers Cuomo saw a performance of Romeo and Juliet and afterwards wrote the song.

55 Years Ago Today!!!! The Turtles' 'Happy Together' Hits Number One

It was 55 years ago today (March 25th, 1967) that the Turtles' "Happy Together" began its three-week run at Number One. "Happy Together" was written by Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon, who were members of the Boston area group the Magicians. The pair went on to write the group's follow-up single, "She'd Rather Be With Me" as well as Three Dog Night's "Celebrate."

"Happy Together," which knocked the Beatles' "Penny Lane" out from the top spot, has gone on to be featured in numerous TV shows, films and commercials, most recently for the Burger King chain.

Turtles' frontman Howard Kaylan says that he and group co-founder Mark Volman -- better known as Flo & Eddie -- made the right choice in deciding to battle for the group's trademark and ownership of their songs: "Because we went through the lawsuits back in the '60s and '70s with our label to regain our name and our credibility, and a little bit of self-esteem -- we were able several years later to actually win our name back, and the masters and the right to keep recording as the Turtles."

Kaylan told us that well after nearly-60 years in the business, he's happy with the way his life and career has turned out: "It's been a wonderful existence the way we've played the game. Y'know, if you really love the music and you really love the entire concept of rock n' roll and being a little slice of Americana, and adding your two cents to the tapestry, there's no better life in the world than the one that was chosen for us."

Throughout the years "Happy Together" has been covered by such artists as Dawn, the Captain & Tennille, Vikki Carr, Mel Torme, Petula Clark, Melba Moore, Donny Osmond, the Ventures, Percy Faith, and Frank Zappa, among others.

In 2013, Howard Kaylan published his memoir, called Shell Shocked: My Life With the Turtles, Flo And Eddie, And Frank Zappa, Etc.

Happy Birthday, Diana Ross!!!

Happy Birthday to Diana Ross, who turns 78 on Saturday (March 26th)!!! Ross is now the sole surviving original member of the Supremes, with singer Mary Wilson dying on February 8th, 2021 at the age of 76.

Wilson was the second of the original Supremes to die. This past February 22nd marked the 46th anniversary of co-founder Florence Ballard's death at age of 32. In addition to Ross, from the group's classic lineup, the only member still alive is Ballard's replacement, 82-year-old Cindy Birdsong.

Last November, Diana Ross released her 25th solo studio album, titled, Thank You, which peaked at Number Seven in the UK and hit Number 25 on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart.

Back in 2019, in celebration of Ross' 75th birthday, the documentary Diana Ross: Her Life, Love And Legacy hit the big screen. The concert doc featured "a remastered version of Ross' historic 1983 Central Park concert with never-before-seen footage and commentary from the Ross family, including sons Evan Ross and Ross Naess, daughters Rhonda Ross Kendrick, Chudney Ross, and Tracee Ellis Ross."

In 2019, Diana Ross faced a bit of backlash after taking to Twitter to defend her late protege Michael Jackson against the most recent molestation charges leveled against him in the wake of the Leaving Neverland documentary. Ross tweeted: "This is what's on my heart this morning. I believe and trust that Michael Jackson was and is A magnificent incredible force to me and to many others. STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE"

Diana Ross was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and joined the R&B trio the Primettes in 1959. At the time the Primettes were made up of Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and original member Barbara Martin. After signing to Motown records in 1960, the group changed their name to the Supremes.

Starting in 1964 with "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes," the Supremes scored 33 Top 40 singles, including 12 Number One pop hits. "Someday We'll Be Together" was the group's final Number One, after which Ross left to begin a solo career, which earned her an additional 27 Top 40 hits, including 1970's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," her first solo Number One.

Ross also reached the top of the charts with "Touch Me In The Morning" (1973), "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" (1975), "Love Hangover" (1976), "Upside Down" (1980), and "Endless Love" -- her 1981 duet with Lionel Richie.

She has also had a career as an actress, earning an Academy Award best actress nomination for her role as singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues. Her other films included Mahogany, and The Wiz.

Donny Osmond recalled watching Ross whip her band into shape during a mid-'70s soundcheck: "There's a reason why they call her 'The Boss.' In Vegas, I can't remember if I was following her at Caesars or she was following us at Caesars. She was doing rehearsals during the day of our closing night and man she ruled with an iron fist. And you just didn't get in her way. But in a way, I admired it because she commanded the stage. She knew what she wanted (and) nobody would cross her."

Diana Ross told us it took her years to finally become in charge of her career: "Y'know, you learn from mistakes. You learn what you have to offer and you try to give that back. And it gives you a little bit of ownership in that way. When you have a little ownership in executive producing, you have more of a voice in how certain things are done. Not that much, but you have somewhat of a voice, and it took me a long time to get to be an executive producer."

She says that despite her many years in the spotlight, she's still a family-oriented person: "Y'know, that's really who I am. I'm in show business, and I know people have a lot of images of what, y'know, all the possibilities of show business are, but I'm a . . . I'm a family-oriented person."

Diana Ross' daughter, actress Tracee Ellis Ross, star of ABC's Black-ish, recently appeared on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers and joked about growing up with Ross as her mom: "(Tracee Ross): "She was a great mom, but my mom also (laughs) did she always would say to us, 'Oh, this, I'm not doing this. I'm not leaving you nothin.' I'm gonna to spend all this. (laughter) This is for me. You better get yourself a nice job.' I remember my mom saying, 'Tracee your hair products alone really are a problem. You're going to need to get a very good job.' (Seth Meyers): Oh wow. (Tracee): I have a lot of hair. (Seth): Yeah. (Tracee): I have a lot of hair. (Seth): She wouldn't even leave you hair money. She's saying she's not. . . (Tracee): No. Not even hair money. Maybe for a roof over the head and medical. (Seth): Yeah, okay, got you. She's not considering this a condition. (Tracee): No, this is not condition. Conditioning is on me."

In December 2007 Ross was among the Kennedy Center Honorees, which also included Brian Wilson, Martin Scorsese, Steve Martin, and pianist Leon Fleischer.

Ross' 2007 studio album -- I Love You -- peaked at Number 32 on the Billboard 200 charts and featured covers of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," Harry Nilsson's "Remember," Bill Withers' "Lovely Day," Heatwave's "Always And Forever," the Drifters' "This Magic Moment," the Beatles' "I Will," Spiral Staircase's "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday," and Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," among others.

Aerosmith Rolls Out 2022 'Deuces Are Wild' Vegas Dates

Aerosmith will resume its Las Vegas "Deuces Are Wild" residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, beginning June 17th, with a total of 24 dates played before the end of 2022. General on sale tickets starting at $75 go on sale on Thursday, March 31st at 10 a.m. PT.

Back in 2019 guitarist Joe Perry explained the allure of playing the "Deuces Are Wild" residency telling Variety, "This has been an incredible opportunity to play a smaller version of our regular show in an intimate seating (and) a way to present the heart and soul of the band's essence with added elements you wouldn't have ever been able to do in a one-night-only setting. It's something very different than what we have ever done before."

The band enlisted Beatles archival producer Giles Martin, who co-designed the sound for Cirque du Soleil's The Beatles LOVE show, to supervise their sound in Vegas. Steven Tyler shed light on how the production in Vegas makes everything else pale in comparison: "The sound takes everything about this show to the next level, and it's a 360 experience; full immersion. Nowhere else can fans hear what I'm hearing and see what I'm seeing like they can at our show. We found the best people we could for every aspect of the show. Whether it was the lights, sound, mechanics, all the moving parts, we had the best people."

In 2018, Aerosmith appeared on NBC's Today show to announce its initial residency at the 5,200-seat Park Theater at Park MGM. While at Today, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Joey Kramer explained what fans can expect from the upcoming Vegas run: "(Steven Tyler): We decided to do Vegas (cheers) Viva Las Aerosmith. (Joe Perry): Well, we wanna bring a show in there that we really can't do when we're on the road on a regular tour. So we wanna bring a show that still has Aerosmith and all the guts of Aerosmith, but has a whole other element to it that we've never been able to do before. (Joey Kramer): We bring you into, into Aerosmith's world, the history behind our almost 50 years of being together. And as soon as you walk into the Park Theatre in Vegas, you're going to walk into Aerosmith world. Everything about it is going to be Aerosmith, Aerosmith, Aerosmith."
