Pete Townshend Recalls Turning Paul McCartney On To Home Recording

Pete Townshend revealed that he helped Paul McCartney understand the intricacies of home recording, which lead to his one-man-band solo debut, McCartney.

In the May issue of Uncut, the Who leader recalled how he hipped "Macca" into tracking full-on masters at home: "Do you know the story about Paul's first solo album? I was working on my first solo album, Who Came First, at Olympic. He was in the studio doing something as well and came in to listen to the whole album. Paul said: 'How did you do this?' I said that I recorded it at home. I said, 'I've got a little mixing desk and an eight-track tape machine.' He went, 'F***! And you did it yourself?' I said, 'Yeah, you should do it.'"

Townshend went on to recall, "We had a couple of phone calls subsequently and then he called up one day, really energized, and said, 'The guys from Abbey Road have delivered an eight-track tape machine to my house in St. John's Wood and I've started.' So he made that first album with (McCartney). That's how Paul started. Now he's got this big SSL studio in his house in Sussex, he can do whatever the f*** he likes!"

Paul McCartney explained recording the McCartney album all by himslef wasn't an exercise to show off his talents -- but the easiest way to get his music out following the Beatles' demise: "It wasn't so much muscles I hadn't had a chance to use in the Beatles, it was (about) keeping going. It wasn't that I was not allowed to do stuff in the Beatles and then I was allowed to do it on my own, it was more a question of I did stuff with the Beatles, then suddenly the prospect was looming that I wasn't gonna do stuff -- and that was frightening. So, I just said, 'Well, I'm just gonna do stuff for my own pleasure.' Then I played it for a few people and they sort of said, 'Wow, y'know, that's amazing.' That's what happened. I finally thought, 'Y'know what? This is an album. A quirky one -- but it's an album.'"

On Friday (March 25th), the Who will front an acoustic band at London's Royal Albert Hall as part of the 2022 Teenage Cancer Trust concert.

Paul McCartney kicks off his North American tour on April 28th at Spokane, Washington's Spokane Arena.

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets Set For 28-City Fall Tour

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets has rolled out a 28-city North American fall run. Rolling Stone reported that the band -- led by Pink Floyd's co-founding drummer -- has added eight new stops to the leg, which are mainly rescheduled dates that were on the books prior to the pandemic.

As it stands now, Mason and the band will kick things off on September 22nd at Boston's Shubert Theatre and wind things down on this side of the pond on November 1st in Vancouver at The Orpheum.

Saucerful Of Secrets' setlists are comprised of all early Floyd material, predating the 1973 classic, The Dark Side Of The Moon, with a heavy emphasis on the band's early era and the work of the band's original guiding force, the late-Syd Barrett. In addition to Mason on drums, Saucerful Of Secrets includes Gary Kemp -- of Spandau Ballet fame -- on guitar and vocals, Guy Pratt on bass, Lee Harris on guitar, and Dom Beken on keyboards.

Nick Mason said in a statement, "We are really looking forward to returning to North America and we're happy to be able to now announce these new dates for later this year. We wanted to make sure to come back when it's safe for our fans, the band, and our crew."

Nick Mason told us that he and his Pink Floyd bandmates -- along with all of Syd Barrett's legion of fans -- will always wonder where Barrett would've gone if he had wrestled himself from the clutches of madness: "There's always that wondering if things had played out differently whether Syd would've continued on and done more wonderful things. Y'know, there's an element of the James Dean thing -- 'What could he, or might he have done if he'd had that opportunity?'"

Mason explained that although Pink Floyd made a dramatic shift stylistically when Roger Waters took over the as the band's main songwriter after Syd Barrett left, elements of their earlier work continued on throughout their entire career: "Lyrically they're quite different, because Syd's writing is different to Roger's, but musically, I think, there's a style, there's a sound and a way of assembling the sound that's continued through, and I think particularly in terms of overlaying sound and then this sort of introduction of special effects. That fact that 'See Emily Play,' for instance, has that bridge which is sort of a double-time, speeded-up tape thing, that was a forerunner of all sorts of ideas and sound effects and strange noises that have been used consistently ever since."

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets kicks off its European dates on April 13th at Dublin, Ireland's Convention Centre.

According to The Jasmine Brand, an insider said that Kanye feels that he is the "better parent" and claims that his kids are always with nannies because Kim is "away a lot working and spending time with Pete and that he'd be a better parent."

The source continued, "People close to him were pretty shocked and have been trying to persuade him not to, but he is adamant that he wants the kids full time. Kanye thinks the children spend too much time with the nannies and that he'd be around more than Kim."

KIM KARDASHIAN TRIES TO SELL HER YEEZYS

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian has posted her Yeezy shoes to Kardashian Kloset, her family's version of Depop. According to Page Six, Kardashian listed the used heels for $350 and $375 each, plus a $14.95 shipping fee.

Of course people had a lot to say. One Reddit user responded to the listing, "I don't get my a** up everyday to go to work so I can buy her used shoes." Another wrote, "She might be the greediest person on planet, selling stuff you've gotten for free when you're already a ‘billionaire' is so GROSS."

Following the backlash, the site took down the listing.

The Eagles' Timothy B. Schmit Taps Lindsey Buckingham For New Single

Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit has tapped Fleetwood Mac legend Lindsey Buckingham to supply guitar on his new single, "Simple Man." The track is the first teaser from Schmit's latest solo set, titled Day By Day, which is set for release on May 6th. In addition to Buckingham, "Simple Man" features backing vocals by Beach Boys touring alumnus Chris Farmer and Matt Jardine -- son of the great Al Jardine.

Day By Day all features appearances by Jackson Browne, John Fogerty, Benmont Tench, solo Beatles drummer of choice Jim Keltner, the Doobie Brothers' John McFee, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Timothy B. Schmit explained to us how he casts all the musicians on his albums: "I was able to get Lindsey Buckingham to play that simple lead guitar and he played a little acoustic, too. What I like to do is I go, 'I need this or that in this section -- who would be the best?' (Laughs) And then, if I come up with somebody, I'll see if they want do it. Y'know, what's the worst that could happen? Y'know, they could say, 'No, I'm, busy' or, 'No, I'm not interested."

The Eagles perform tonight (March 22nd) in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Flea Describes His Bass Playing As A 'Cosmic Spiritual River'

Flea continues to focus intently on his musicianship -- especially his bass playing. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are currently prepping for a massive tour behind their from their upcoming album, Unlimited Love, which is set for release on April 1st.

In a new interview featured in the April issue of Bass Player magazine, Flea shed light on how he's approaching the instrument these days: "I think about playing bass -- particularly as it relates to the Red Hot Chili Peppers -- as like a river. With the bass-lines and the way I want to play them, I want to live my life in a way that allows me to open myself up enough for this cosmic, spiritual river to flow through me. I can unleash it however it needs to go -- like when it needs to be violent rapids, or when it needs to be a calm, still pool. However I can serve the chords, the melody, the rhythm and the harmony, I'm going to be loose and free and let it flow."

As lifelong musician, Flea's only ambition is to improve his playing, admitting, "I want to be better. The specific goals I have as a bass player are that I want to become a better soloist, and I want to expand my cerebral knowledge of chord progressions and bass-lines, so I can be a good jazz bass player."

He went on to say, "I want to f***ing rock harder than ever. I want to stir the souls of human beings when we play. And I want to be a good bandmate -- I want to connect with my bandmates, and be a great support to them and help them be the best they can be. I love my band and I'm really proud of the music we've recorded. I feel like it's beautiful. I feel like it's the best we can do. I feel like we're firing on all cylinders and at the top of our game, and I just want to continue to do all those things."

Flea told us that part of becoming a better playing constantly listening to other musicians and letting the inspiration flow through his own playing: "Of course, we rip off people all the time. I mean, no good artist doesn't. I mean, that's what art is for, to rip each other off. It's what you rip off and how you interpret what you rip off and in what context you rip it off. I mean, y'know, we learn from musicians, but we express what's in our hearts, and even though we're influenced and we do rip off other people, of course, you know, we have our own way and we live outside of the rules."

Red Hot Chili Peppers kick off their European dates on June 4th in Seville, Spain at Estadio La Cartuja De Sevilla

Flashback: Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti' Hits Number One

It was 47 years ago today (March 22nd, 1975), that Led Zeppelin's sixth album, Physical Graffiti, hit Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The album, which marked the band's only studio double set, was released on February 24th, 1975 and topped the charts for six straight weeks, staying in the Top 10 for 12 weeks.

Physical Graffiti remains beloved by fans for such Zeppelin classics as "Kashmir," "Trampled Under Foot," "Houses Of The Holy," "In My Time Of Dying," "Down By The Seaside," "Boogie With Stu," "In The Light," and "The Wonton Song," among others.

Much like the Rolling Stones' 1972 double album, Exile On Main Street, Physical Graffiti is a hodge podge of new songs mixed with high quality outtakes from previous albums -- "Bron-Yr-Aur" was originally intended for 1970's Led Zeppelin III; "Boogie With Stu," "Down By The Seaside," and "Night Flight," were recorded in 1971 for that year's Led Zeppelin IV album. "The Rover," "Houses Of The Holy," and "Black Country Woman" were originally recorded in 1972 for the following year's Houses Of The Holy collection.

We asked Jimmy Page if he knew going in that Physical Graffiti was going to be a double album -- and whether half the set would be comprised of outtakes from the band's previous albums: "I thought about it, but it was as good as the material that we came up with. I knew it was going to be fun to revisit this stuff and sort of even go retro on ourselves. There's not many. . . nobody had done that, really. Not that I know of. And I just thought that it would be really good to add even more colors to the pallet. Because there was such variety across the other albums, and just to make something that was such a statement, that 'this is what we do, and how we do it, and nobody is anywhere near it.'"

Jimmy Page said that he laid the ground work for the new material while composing in his home studio: "I made it my business to make sure that we were gonna come up with that amount of material, because I had a good half-a-dozen -- even more than half-a-dozen pieces to go in with. And one of the ones I had was, like, ‘Ten Years Gone,' with all the guitar overdubs, because I had a home studio, a multitrack studio, so I could do all this sort of thing and I planned towards it. So, I had ‘Wonton Song,' I had 'Sick Again,' on and on and on."

We told Page that "Ten Years Gone" -- one of the many unsung classics on Physical Graffiti -- might actually sum up the essence of him as a musician: "I really appreciate what you're saying about the, sort, of essence of it, and I must say that I really intended to make something that is like a guitar-orchestral piece, that's exactly what I intended. And when I was going through it, Robert (Plant) just came up with these lyrics, which were so bang on, it was just absolutely perfect, with a whole plaintive aspect of what it was. Y'know what I mean? It's emotional call. It was absolutely marvelous, really."

Prior to hitting the studio, Jimmy Page had spent a considerable amount of time demoing his new songs and working out his parts at his home studio, before bringing it to the band for their contributions: "I also had the riff and what becomes the brass and electric 12-string (guitar) interjections over that riff of ‘Kashmir.' And ‘Kashmir'; was the first thing that I was just busting to get in there with John Bonham -- and actually, how it worked out was exactly what it was. It was just me and John Bonham on the recording track. I said, ‘Alright, let's get on with it,' and we started playing the riff. And he absolutely loved the ‘Kashmir' riff. And we were playing it over and over, like trance music, and then we did a take of it and then we started overdubbing the extra parts to it, which were going to become the parts that you hear coming in on the orchestra; ‘cause I did think of this orchestral (part) right from the outset, and I also thought of it around the drums, building around the big drum sound and everything else."

In 2015, Led Zeppelin's deluxe, expanded three-disc reissue of the double album was released featuring unheard material and alternate mixes.

Flashback: Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' Tops The Charts

It was 42 years ago today (March 22nd, 1980), that Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)" became a surprise Number One hit in 1980, topping the Billboard Hot 100 charts for four weeks. The Wall, which was the band's 11th studio album, was spearheaded by co-founder Roger Waters and released on November 30th, 1979. The double-album set, which was co-produced by Waters, guitarist David Gilmour, and Bob Ezrin, had hit Number One the previous January 19th, and enjoyed a 15-week run on top of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

The chorus of "Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)" was made up of 23 kids aged 13 to 15, overdubbed a total of 12 times to make them sound like an auditorium full of singers. In 2004, 25 years after the recording, the singers -- then in their late-'30s or early-'40s -- were tracked down and finally began receiving royalties for their appearance on the Floyd classic.

David Gilmour admitted to us that choosing singles from Floyd's albums was never his strong suit: "If I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to be a single, I would have stated it. But I like to ask what the record company people feel that they could support -- and I'm often not the best person to know what would be the best single."

"Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)" is not only Pink Floyd's one and only U.S. chart topper -- it's the band's only Top Ten hit. Their next biggest single was 1973's "Money," which topped out at Number 13.

Even though future songs appeared in the Top Ten of Billboard's Mainstream Rock charts -- on the singles charts, nearly all of them tanked. For example, a major hit like 1987's "Learning To Fly" hit Number One on the Mainstream Rock chart -- yet stalled at Number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Flashback: Ricky Nelson Records 'Hello Mary Lou'

It was 61 years ago today (March 22nd, 1961) that Ricky Nelson recorded "Hello Mary Lou." The song, which was written by Gene Pitney, was the B-side to Nelson's Number One hit "Travelin' Man," and was a substantial hit in its own right, peaking at Number Nine on the charts. "Hello Mary Lou," which was Nelson's 14th Top Ten hit in four years, gained major national exposure when performed on his family's sitcom, The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet Show.

Over the years, "Hello Mary Lou" has gone on to become one of Nelson's most covered songs, with versions by Credence Clearwater Revival, Queen, Bobby Lewis, Pete Best, Brownsville Station, the New Riders Of The Purple Sage, and the Seekers, among others.

Ricky Nelson's son, musician Matthew Nelson told us that crew members from the Ozzie & Harriet TV show still talk about his father's frequent musical performances: "It's pretty mesmerizing and I think we meet people all the time that were watching those performances -- I mean they hung out, people just hung out to wait to see if he would sing a song. And he didn't sing a song on every episode, but when he did it was a big deal."

Matthew's twin, Gunnar Nelson explained why he and brother Matthew devote so much energy into keeping their father's legacy alive: "What fuels us in promoting our dad's stuff and what has done it all through the years, man, is honestly, the music has to live. We're not gonna be here forever, but the music's gotta live and the music's gotta be honored. It deserves it."

Bob Dylan, a lifelong fan of Nelson's, described what he loved about his work in his recent autobiography Bob Dylan: Chronicles Volume One, writing that, "(Nelson) sang his songs calm and steady, like he was in the middle of a storm, men hurling past him. His voice was sort of mysterious and made you fall into a certain mood."

In 2006, a new album, Ricky Nelson: Greatest Hits, was released, collecting all of his '50s and '60s hits including "Hello Mary Lou," "Travelin' Man," "Poor Little Fool," "Lonesome Town," "Stood Up," "It's Late," and his 1972 comeback hit "Garden Party."

A companion DVD, titled Ricky Nelson Sings, includes all of his historic show-closing numbers from The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet Show together for the first time.

Out now is the expended deluxe edition of Nelson's legendary live album Rick Nelson: In Concert - The Troubadour. The set, which now features a whopping 30 bonus tracks from his 1969 stand at the famed L.A. club, includes such Nelson standards as "Hello Mary Lou," "Believe What You Say," "I'm Walkin'," "Travelin' Man," and "It's Late" -- along with covers of Bob Dylan's "She Belongs To Me," "I Shall be Released," "If You Gotta Go (Go Now)," and "Tonight I'll Be Stayin' Here With You," among others.

Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash on December 31st, 1985, at age 45. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Keith Richards On Eric Clapton's Covid Controversy

Keith Richards spoke frankly about old friend Eric Clapton's strictly anti-vaxxer public stance and his negative takes on how the government's pandemic restrictions affect the gathering of crowds.

During an appearance on Rolling Stone's Music Now podcast, Richards explained, "I just want to get rid of this damn thing, and the only way I can see us doing it is everybody does as the doctor says. I love Eric dearly. I've known him since forever, and we've had ups and downs. This Covid thing, it's split people up and made people sometimes go awry for a while, y'know? Hope you rethink here and let's do this thing."

Richards went on to speak about the growing cultural divide in and around the Covid vaccines, admitting, "I don't understand quite why some people are getting so wound up about it. You wouldn't get wound up about the flu or something, y'know what I mean? And that's even worse. And I'm no doctor, but hey, this thing works in various nasty ways on people, and we all have to bear with each other. We all have to have a little sympathy."

Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones have known each other since 1963 when Clapton's band the Yardbirds and the Stones shared management and the Yardbirds took over the Stones' residency at Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, England.

Clapton told us he admires the way Keith Richards followed the lead of their blues idols and grown old making music: "I've read some good interviews where he'd said all he wanted to do was to grow up with this thing, y'know, instead of just leaving it, y'know, as if it was part of his adolescence. Grow up with it, y'know? And I think that's really an important attitude to have, and I think it caught with the rest of them. And I see. . . they're all such great musicians, and I don't think they really counted themselves as that before. And in this day and age, when the, the musician is actually a dying breed, I think they've all come to realize their worth."

Eric Clapton will next perform on May 7th and 8th at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The Rolling Stones kicks off their European tour on June 1st in Madrid, Spain at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

One curious repost was video of a baby moving around its mom's pregnant belly, with the caption "Mommy … get me out of here."

Kanye West Pulled From Grammys Due To 'Concerning Online Behavior'

The Recording Academy has banned Kanye West from performing at the 2022 Grammys. According to The Blast, an insider said that the decision to ban the rapper and fashion designer from the show was based off of his recent Instagram activity, which included Ye calling Trevor Noah a c**n. Noah is hosting the Grammys for the second year in a row.

Noah responded to the news, saying, "I said counsel Kanye not cancel Kanye." A source also told CNN, "Trevor never asked the Grammys to ban Kanye from performing. He was not offended by Kanye's Instagram post and Trevor responded on Instagram. The notion that Trevor or his team asked the Grammys to ban Kanye is ridiculous."

West had used a racial slur to call out Noah in a post on Instagram, which led to him being suspended from the platform for 24 hours.

The 64th annual Grammy Awards are set to air Sunday, April 3rd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Robert Plant Recalls Playing Paul McCartney's Beatle Bass In Concert

Although Paul McCartney never played his iconic Hofner "violin" Beatle bass in concert with Wings in the 1970's -- another rock legend actually did: Robert Plant.

Plant recalled joining McCartney onstage for the December 29th, 1979 final show of The Concerts For People Of Kampuchea. Plant, who had performed Elvis Presley's "Little Sister" earlier in the night backed by Rockpile featuring Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe, was part of the McCartney's massive show-closing Rockestra mini-set, which also featured Zeppelin bandmate John Bonham, the Who's Pete Townshend and Kenney Jones, among many others.

Plant remember the gig and playing the famed "Beatle bass," telling Uncut, "When we were doing The Concert for The People Of Kampuchea at Hammersmith Odeon in 1979, with this huge star-spangled band, he gave me his Hofner bass to wear. It's the beautiful bass, the one that we know from all the songs and photographs. I was miming away furiously when the f***ing strap broke. I thought that was it. I was so close to getting on with this guy and then. . . It was great, it was very funny. I think the strap was ready to go anyway, but I know Bonzo (John Bonham), who was drumming behind me, was in stitches. What could you do that was really s*** other than break the Beatles' bass?"

Plant went on to say, "I have tremendous respect for Paul and the fact his work will never be over. Also that he didn't bear a grudge."

Coming on May 6th are new vinyl half speed remasters of the Who's first two albums -- 1965's My Generation and 1966's A Quick One -- with the latter mastered by longtime Who engineer Jon Astley. Both albums are packaged in original sleeve with obi stripe and certificate of authenticity and are available now to pre-order.

The images of the Who's early career will always be dominated with Pete Townshend's iconic guitar smashing -- an instant gimmick that never failed to thrill: "Next thing I knew, I'm breaking guitars at gigs, y'know, saying, ‘I am destroying the instrument of my bourgeois child longing,' y'know, which is I used to stand outside shops and people used to come and go ‘What a great axe!!!' And I'd say, ‘It's not an act, it's . . .' And I'd even have the guys in the band going ‘What a load of pompous pretentious drivel' -- and I'd go, ‘No, it's auto-destructive art."

Amazingly, Pete Townshend is still having "My Generation's" key lines -- "Hope I die before I get old" -- read back to him by journalists in hope of a "true" explanation: "The song was more about, y'know, refusing to grow old, rather than, y'know, 'I don't wanna grow old' -- it was about refusing to grow old inside. That's what I'm so proud of: having the physique of a 16-year-old boy!"

On Friday (March 25th), Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will front an acoustic band at London's Royal Albert Hall as part of the 2022 Teenage Cancer Trust concert.

The pair will be backed by Pete's younger brother and longtime Who touring guitarist Simon Townshend, Phil Spalding, Jodie Linscott, Billy Nicholls, Geraint Watkins, Charlie Hart, and Andy Cutting.

Dave Grohl's New Dream Widow Metal Album Gets Release Date

Dave Grohl's metal album that he recorded with fictional band Dream Widow is due out this month. Acccording to Variety, the album is due out on March 25th.

In the Foo Fighters' horror-comedy film Studio 666, the band move into an Encino mansion to record their much-anticipated tenth album. Once in the house, Grohl finds himself grappling with supernatural forces related to the studio's former residents -- Dream Window — that threaten both the completion of the album and the lives of the Foo Fighters.

Grohl opened up about Dream Window, saying, "The singer went crazy and murdered his whole band because of creative differences… We come in 25 years later to record, having no idea what happened 25 years ago, and I start becoming possessed by the spirit of the guy from 25 years ago and the spirit of the house. But this song, 'March Of The Insane', this is their lost record. This is the record they were making before their singer murdered them."

On the LP, he said, "It will be the lost album. It'll be the album they were making before he f*cking killed the entire band." According to Grohl, "some of it sounds like doom-metal pioneers TROUBLE; some of it sounds like Corrosion of Conformity; some of it has a KYUSS vibe."
