Fish Dropped By Osprey Causes Brush Fire, Power Outage
Firefighters in British Columbia have determined that a power outage and small brush fire were caused by an unusual culprit – an osprey dropping a fish onto a power line. Upon investigation, officials quickly deduced that the fire had been sparked when a fish struck a power line located over a mile from the nearest body of water. As explained in the fire department’s social media post, “The fish had been dropped by a local osprey onto the hydro line causing embers to drop, along with the fish, to the dry grasses below.” The post further speculated that the “rather tired bird” may have dropped its catch due to the heat of the day, or perhaps even attempted to try “cooked” fish for a change. Fortunately, the osprey was identified and found to have sustained no injuries in the incident. The impact of the fish striking the power line also resulted in an outage for some Ashcroft-area customers. (UPI)
