Starbucks Korea Bans Customers From Bringing In Desktop Computers, Printers

Starbucks locations in South Korea are cracking down on customers setting up elaborate workstations in their cafes. The company has posted notices banning the use of desktop computers, printers, power strips, and large partitions. Customers will also not be allowed to leave belongings unattended for extended periods. This policy targets a group known as “cagongjok” – a term combining the Korean words for “cafe” and “study” – who spend hours studying or working in the cafes, taking up excessive space. While laptops are still permitted, Starbucks Korea is seeking to address complaints from other customers about these “cafe squatters” and their extensive setups, which have gone viral online. The company says people are welcome to work or study, but must avoid monopolizing the space. (UPI)
