FDA Warns Public Not To Eat Possibly Radioactive Shrimp Sold At Walmart
The FDA is warning consumers not to eat certain Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart due to possible Cesium-137 contamination. U.S. Customs alerted the FDA to the detection of the radioactive isotope in shipping containers at four ports. Testing on the shrimp from Indonesian distributor BMS Foods also tested positive. While no contaminated shrimp has entered the food supply, the FDA is recommending a recall of all BMS Foods products shipped after the initial detection. Consumers are advised to discard any matching raw frozen shrimp purchased from Walmart. The FDA says the shrimp violates food safety laws, as it appears to have been handled under unsanitary conditions that may have led to Cesium-137 contamination. All BMS Foods products are now banned from entering the U.S. until the issue is resolved. Cesium-137 exposure can cause burns, radiation sickness, and even death. (ABC News)
