Library Of Congress Unveils Rare Draft of ‘Over The Rainbow’ Lyrics

The Library of Congress has added a trove of Wizard of Oz memorabilia to its collection, including the only known draft of lyrics for the iconic song “Over the Rainbow.” The archive includes 35 manuscripts from composer Harold Arlen and lyricist EY “Yip” Harburg, along with letters from producer/co-director Mervyn LeRoy. It also features Arlen’s 1939 Academy Award for “Over the Rainbow.” The song has long been regarded as one of the greatest movie songs of all time. The Library’s Music Division notes this gift “honors Arlen and Harburg’s imaginative genius” and preserves the legacy of the music that has captured generations. The newly acquired materials, including artifacts from the Wicked spinoff, will be available for public viewing at the Library of Congress from October 23 through January 7.
