Fire Department Loses Over $100k To Scam

A volunteer fire department in Maryland sent $220,000 to scammers believing they were purchasing new ambulances. The Rockville Volunteer Fire Department was apparently the victim of a “business email compromise” scam. The department believed they were sending funds to a trusted vendor, but the vendor never received the funds. Instead, scammers had sent the department different bank information while posing as the vendor. While about $100,000 has been recovered, it’s unclear if the RVFD will receive the rest of the money back. “The thought that anybody would think of stealing from volunteers is just mind-boggling,” RVFD president Eric N. Bernard said. (newser)
