Instagram Updates Teen Accounts With PG-13 Movie Content Standards

Instagram announced new content protections for teenage users that mirror PG-13 movie rating guidelines. The automatic update affects Teen Accounts launched last year, which already restrict who can contact teens and limit screen time. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explained the changes were “shaped by feedback from parents” and noted teens will see “the rare, but occasional, swear word or suggestive moment” similar to PG-13 films. The restrictions apply to feeds, stories, comments, and search results, preventing teens from following accounts with 18+ content. Parents can enable stricter settings or give permission for teens to opt out. Instagram reports 97% of users ages 13-15 kept default restrictions since Teen Accounts launched, while 94% of surveyed parents found them helpful. The platform says the update provides “clarity and peace of mind” by aligning with familiar movie rating standards. (Story URL)
