Little League Criticizes Betting On Its Child Athletes
Little League International condemned sports betting on youth games in a recent statement. The organization said, “Little League is a trusted place where children are learning the fundamentals of the games and all the important life lessons that come with having fun, celebrating teamwork, and playing with integrity.” It added, “No one should be exploiting the success and failures of children playing the game they love for their own personal gain.” Jon Solomon of Project Play noted negative impacts on young players involved in betting. In 2018, 26% of youth in Mobile County, Alabama, reported playing games where adults bet on outcomes. Hawaii Little League manager Gerald Oda emphasized the innocence of the tournament, saying, “This is the only tournament where you’re representing your local community.” Major betting sites do not offer wagers on the event.
