Texas Hunter Killed by His African Buffalo Prey

A hunting expedition in South Africa ended in tragedy for a Texas man, Asher Watkins, who was killed by a Cape buffalo he was pursuing. The 52-year-old was part of a group organized by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, including a professional hunter and a tracker, when the 1.3-ton buffalo suddenly charged at them at a speed of 35mph in what the safari company described as an “unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.” Watkins, a managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group known for his expertise in ranch and land sales across Texas and Oklahoma, was reportedly on a hunting trip that cost him nearly $10,000. His brother, mother, and stepfather were at the safari lodge at the time of the incident.
