How Often Do You Clean Your Ears?

If cleaning your ears is part of your regular routine, you might be doing more work than you need.

According to ear, nose and throat specialists, earwax is not something your body accidentally made too much of. It serves an important purpose by helping prevent infection and keeping the area lubricated.

But here’s one thing that doctors universally do not recommend: Q-tips. Cotton swabs can push wax deeper into the ear canal . . . This can cause blockages, irritation, bleeding, infections, and damage to the eardrum.

If you want to clean your ears, experts say to stick to the outside of the ear . . . and just use a washcloth or soapy finger.

Long story short, earwax is good. Embrace it.
