The Five Things You Should Never Share with ChatGPT

Here’s a friendly reminder that ChatGPT is not your friend . . . and that everything you type into an A.I. bot is a semi-public conversation.

It’s because they use your conversations to train future models . . . which means they have to store all your stuff somewhere.  And it’s not just ChatGPT, it’s Gemini, Copilot, and Claude, too. It’s all of them.

So, according to privacy experts, here are five things you should never share with an A.I. bot:

1.  Personally identifiable information.  Don’t use your name, address, phone number or Social Security number.

2. Intimate personal details.  You shouldn’t be sharing sensitive information about your relationships, mental health, or private life.

3.  Medical information.  Don’t share your health records, diagnoses, and any other personal healthcare details.

4.  Confidential work information.  Don’t use any client data, source code, trade secrets, or anything covered by an NDA.

5.  Financial information.  You should also not share any of your bank accounts, investment records, credit card numbers, tax documents, and pay stubs.

But if you’ve already shared sensitive information, you can still delete your chat history and review your privacy settings.  And going forward, try to use general descriptions whenever possible.

In other words, if you wouldn’t post it in a company group chat, you probably shouldn’t paste it into an A.I. chatbot.
