Four “Tells” You Used A.I. to Write Your Resume

A.I. bots like ChatGPT can be a great tool for writing resumes and cover letters, but job recruiters are catching on. Here are four big giveaways that you used A.I. on your job application . . .
1. Generic buzzwords. Terms like “results-driven,” “go-getter,” and “team player” are overused and vague, especially without specific examples to back them up.
2. There’s no personal touch. A lot of A.I. content just FEELS copy-pasted and robotic. If you mention you’re an “excellent communicator,” include a real-life example to give your resume an authentic, personal touch.
3. Weird formatting or placeholders. Yes, some people submit resumes with mismatched fonts, inconsistent formatting, or even with template prompts still attached, like “[Insert accomplishment here].”
4. The “flower shop” example. A.I. chatbots have a tendency to generate similar responses and anecdotes for users. One recruiter noticed several candidates included the same random example of running a flower shop, even though the company had nothing to do with flowers. After seeing it multiple times, she realized they likely all used the same A.I. tool.
