Elton John Now Has The Highest Grossing Tour Of All Time

Elton John is certainly finishing big with his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour" now officially named the biggest selling tour of all time. Billboard Boxscore posted, "(Elton) has grossed $817.9 million across 278 shows so far -- more than any tour in Boxscore history. Bypassing Ed Sheeran's "The Divide Tour" ($776.4 million), it is the first tour in Billboard's archives to cross the $800 million benchmark."

Sheeran had earned the biggest tour honors back in 2019 for his 258-show run, trumping U2's "The 360 Tour," which had snagged a cool $736.4 million.

Upon announcing his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour back in 2018, Elton John was asked why the trek needed to be such a long and major outing: "My fans have always turned up to my concerts. It means a lot to me. I've been touring since 1970 -- that's 48 years, and I've always managed to sell out concerts. So, it's a way of saying thank you, and it's a way of going out with a bang. I don't wanna go out with a whimper -- I wanna go out with a big bang." SOUNDCUE

Elton John will next perform on March 23rd and 24th at Liverpool, England's M&S Bank Arena.

The ongoing "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, which began in 2018, is set to run through July 2023 with Elton performing his final European dates.

George Harrison's Sister Dead At 91

Louise Harrison, George Harrison's sister and eldest sibling, died on January 29th at age 91, according to The Daily Mail. Louise, who spent her final days in assisted living, was known to a generation of Beatles fans for her participation in countless fan convention across the U.S. and England, and even managed her own Beatles tribute band -- the Liverpool Legends. Her younger brother, 89-year-old Harry -- who like their late-brother Peter -- worked for George until his retirement, remains the sole-surviving member of the original Liverpool Harrison clan.

Louise and her husband, Scottish mining engineer Gordon Caldwell, emigrated to the U.S. in the 1950's, eventually settling in Illinois. In 1963 as "Beatlemania" was blossoming across Britain, a still-unknown George and Peter Harrison visited their sister -- marking George the first Beatles to visit the States -- including Manhattan -- months before his bandmates. Louise played an early role trying to get the Beatles played on U.S. radio.

In the 2000's, a reported falling out between George's widow Olivia and Louise ended her $2,000 monthly pension from the Harrison estate, which George had set up for her in the 1980's. According to inside sources, the pair had fallen out due to Louise's overt exploitation of their relationship for Beatles-inspired attractions and money-making ventures. She last saw George in Staten Island, New York 14 days before his 2001 death.

George Harrison's first wife Pattie Boyd told us she was amazed at what a loving and supportive family George had away from the madness of "Beatlemania": "They were so warm as a family and really were most inviting and kind to me, and I was very fond of them. And I'm still in touch with Harry, George's eldest brother. And so I had spent a lot of time with him and his wife Irene, and with (his brother) Pete and his wife and their children. So. . . we all grew up together."

Jane's Addiction Taps Josh Klinghoffer For Upcoming Tour Dates

Jane's Addiction posted a message to fans on social media explaining that former-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer will join them on tour. The band is forging ahead with a string of domestic and foreign March dates without guitarist Dave Navarro, who's been suffering from long covid.

The band -- Perry Farrell, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins posted a message on Facebook, which reads:

We'd like to address the questions surrounding Dave and the upcoming Jane's shows. As a band we are in a great place, writing new music, and the bond is tighter than ever. We all hope Dave can be out playing with us; when he feels healthy and ready.

For the near future, our brother Josh Klinghoffer will jump in for the upcoming shows on the West Coast, South America and some additional international shows to be announced soon. We want to thank you for being there with us over these thirty some odd odd years. You know, we're going to keep throwing down for you.

Perry, Eric, and Stephen

Not too long ago, Perry Farrell told us that he counts himself lucky to have found his place in the world through Jane's Addiction: "Well, y'know, I still cherish being in Jane's Addiction, as hard as it is, y'know? I can't say that my band and I are friends, and there was a time we didn't like each other at all, but I would say that I love being in Jane's Addiction so much, it overrides any kind of like shortcomings I might see in them and they might see in me."

Happy Birthday, Heartbreaker Mike Campbell!!!

Happy Birthday to Tom Petty's right-hand man, Heartbreakers co-founder and lead guitarist -- Mike Campbell, who turns 73 today (February 1st). Campbell was part of Mudcrutch with Petty prior to the pair founding the Heartbreakers in 1975, and along with Petty reunited with the band for their 2007 self-titled album. Throughout the years, Campbell co-wrote many of Petty and the Heartbreakers'' most beloved songs, including, "Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "A Woman In Love," "Love Is A Long Road," and "You Wreck Me," along with "Jammin' Me" -- which they co-wrote with Bob Dylan, and "Runnin' Down A Dream" which the pair co-wrote with Jeff Lynne.

Released last March was External Combustion, Mike Campbell's second album with his band the Dirty Knobs, with whom he opened for the Who in 2022.

In 2018, Mike Campbell became an official member of Fleetwood Mac. In 2018, he and Crowded House leader Neil Finn were enlisted by Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, respectively, to replace the band's ousted driving force, Lindsey Buckingham.

In addition to his years performing with and writing for the Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell is perhaps best known for co-writing two of Don Henley's biggest solo hits "The Boys Of Summer" and "Heart Of The Matter" -- not to mention co-writing with Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks' first solo hit, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Campbell was asked about how he came to be Fleetwood Mac's latest in a long line of guitar virtuosos: "It was my birthday and I was sitting in my backyard and I got a call: 'Hi, this is Mick Fleetwood.' I was wondering what I was gonna do -- I had a few things, but nothing quite as (laughs) big as this. I'm making this my priority until whenever."

Following Tom Petty's sudden accidental drug overdose on October 2nd, 2017 at age 66, a saddened Mike Campbell recalled to Rolling Stone the Heartbreakers' final gig at the Hollywood Bowl on September 25th, 2017: "It was magical, it was spiritual. Everybody was so happy, especially Tom -- full of glory and hope. I'm just so sad to think that I'm not going to play those songs again."

In addition to his work with Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, and Don Henley, Mike Campbell's also written songs for and with Johnny Cash, Fleetwood Mac, Lone Justice, Roger McGuinn, John Prine, Patti Scialfa, Brian Setzer, J.D. Souther, and Cheap Trick's Robin Zander. Campbell co-produced four songs on Roy Orbison's 1989 posthumously-released album Mystery Girl, and played guitar on the Wallflowers' 1996 hit "Sixth Avenue Heartache." In 2009, Campbell supplied guitar and mandolin to Bob Dylan's Together Through Life album.

On April 6th, 1992 when Eric Clapton was unable to perform with his band at what turned out to be George Harrison's final concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, Harrison deputized Campbell to play the show as the former Beatle's lead guitarist.

Over the years Campbell co-produced the Heartbreakers' albums Southern Accents, Pack Up The Plantation: Live!, Let Me Up (I've Had Enough), Into The Great Wide Open, Songs And Music From She's The One, Echo, The Last DJ, Hypnotic Eye, as well as the Petty solo albums Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, and Highway Companion. Campbell also co-produced the Mudcrutch reunion set, and recently co-produced 2018's An American Treasure, 2019's The Best Of Everything, 2020's Wildflowers And All the Rest, and 2021's Finding Wildflowers: Alternate Versions and Angel Dream (Songs and Music from the Motion Picture 'She's The One').

We asked Mike Campbell, why it took until the Heartbreakers' 1999 album Echo to step up front and sing one of his solo compositions "I Don't Wanna Fight": "For a long time I would just write music. And then I got so much of that and got so tired of writing music and waiting for someone to come up with, y'know, something to sing on it that I just started doing it myself, just to amuse myself. And then I showed some stuff to Tom, he'd go, 'Wow, that sounds like me.' So I kept showing stuff to him. And then, when he heard that one, he thought, 'Well, you should just do that one, 'cause that'll fit on the record and you do it fine.' So that just sorta happened that way."

Campbell, who had been by Tom Petty's side through thick and thin over the decades, explained how the first Mudcrutch reunion fell into place 33 years after they split up: "It started from a phone call from Tom Petty, who got the idea of calling the guys up and seeing if we could finish some of the things up that we intended to do back in the day, and we all thought it was great idea so we put it together. And it's just kind of snowballed from there. It was something that I hadn't thought about, but when I thought about it, I thought yeah, that'd be really cool. Let's see if those guys can still play and if we have any chemistry. And it was very intriguing. It's actually turned out better than we could've hoped."

Journey's 'Frontiers' Turns 50 Today!

It was 40 tears ago today (February 1st, 1983) that Frontiers, Journey's eighth album was released. Frontiers, which served as the followup to the band's 1981 mega-platinum Escape collection, peaked at Number Two on the Billboard 200 album chart and spent 23 weeks in the Top 10, with nine of them stalled at the Number Two slot behind Michael Jackson's Thriller.

All told the set, which eventually went platinum six times over, featured four Top 40 hits -- "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" (#8),"Faithfully" (#12), along with "After the Fall" and "Send Her My Love," which both topped out at Number 23.

We recently caught up with keyboardist Jonathan Cain, and he walked us through how one of his and Steve Perry's greatest team-ups -- the lead single and opening track to 1983's Frontiers album -- "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" -- came into being: "We took Escape on the road and we knew we needed more teeth. We knew we needed something like 'Separate Ways,' y'know? Like, what would make our set undeniably great? And we tried to fill in what we were missing musically. I think we all sensed it. And I remember writing 'Separate Ways' with Steve (Perry) on the road. We wrote that in a hotel room -- (bassist) Ross (Valory) was going through a divorce and boom -- out comes 'Separate Ways,' and we're playin' it at the end of the Escape tour. Y'know, 'cause we needed it in the set. Now, we start fine tuning ourselves, y'know? And that's how in tune we were with our music. It was all of us, man."

We asked Steve Perry if over the years when he's heard one of his Journey classics on the radio, he keeps it on or switches it off: "(Laughs) On a good day, I'd listen -- on a bad day, I'd turn it off. Sometimes it was too reminiscent and I wasn't ready for it. But sometimes I would listen to it with fresh ears and I would go, 'Wow. That's pretty cool. That's actually (laughs) pretty cool."

In 2022, the new compilation, Stranger Things: Soundtrack from the Netflix Series, Season 4, featured a newly created buzzworthy Bryce Miller/Alloy Tracks remix of "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)."

Journey, led by Neal Schon, is currently on the band's 50th anniversary tour with special guests Toto. They next perform on February 4th in Allentown, Pennsylvania at PPL Center.

The Who Announces New Live Album, UK Tour dates

The Who have just taggged nine UK stops to their upcoming European trek -- which now includes the band's first shows in Edinburgh, Scotland in 40 years. In addition to that, on March 31st, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will issue the group's latest live set, The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley. The collection will be issued as a two-CD/Blu-ray or three-LP set.

Roger Daltrey spoke about the upcoming dates in the official announcement:

Having not toured the UK for six years, it's great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map. Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven't been to for decades, will make this very special for me.

This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.

The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley features sections from the band's July 6th, 2019 one-off London show, which featured Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder joining the band for the Quadrophenia rocker, "The Punk And The Godfather." Strangely, the album closes with the acoustic Endless Wire number "Tea & Theatre," which was not performed at the Wembley show and it's unclear where the new live version was culled from.

Roger Daltrey told us he recognizes that the Who remains very much a part of the now -- both in terms of the business and a still growing legion of fans: "It's nice to have survived, because we did lose a lot of friends on the way. It is extraordinary -- and (to) still able to be able to draw an audience that in some ways is, y'know -- to what young bands kind of draw -- is enormous; thanks to things, like CSI and our songs being on there and other bands picking up Who music and saying that it influenced them. Their fans come and see us and they say: 'Woo, this is something different.' I mean, it's true, Who music is very different from most rock n' roll that's out there."

Report: Mick & Keith Recording In The Bahamas

New reporting puts Mick Jagger and Keith Richards recording together in Nassau, The Bahamas at Sanctuary Studios. The Rolling Stones have been slowly working on its first set of original material since 2005's A Bigger Bang with their producer of the past three decades, Don Was.

According to Showbiz411.com: "Sources in the Bahamas say Mick and Keith (not sure about Ronnie Wood, Darryl Jones, and Steve Jordan) arrive at the studio every day at 6 p.m. and leave around midnight. And these guys are not slackers. I'll bet they're getting a lot done in those sessions."

Ozzy Osbourne recently stated that the Stones are currently working on new material with producer Andrew Watt -- who is also working with Paul McCartney and best known for producing Ozzy, Eddie Vedder as well as Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, One Republic, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, blink-182, Zac Brown Band, and Maroon 5, among others. Watt is also the guitarist for Eddie Vedder's solo band, the Earthlings.

Although the Rolling Stones have always been dealing with the shadow of their early days -- Mick Jagger explained that for the most part, they remain one of the lucky bands not lumped in with any particular era or decade: "I find it fascinating when I hear other people talking about it and other groups copying certain periods. I don't find it, very, kind of, interesting to look back too much. You can't ignore what you were, but I think to kind of take that stuff too seriously. . . I'm glad that the Stones aren't labeled a ''60's band' -- and I find increasingly that they're not. They're just not completely tracked in there. That's taken quite a lot of effort."

Paul McCartney Resurrects Mid-'90s Jeff Beck Teamup

As part of his ongoing Meat Free Monday vegetarian campaign, Paul McCartney has unearthed a collaboration between him and Jeff Beck from back in 1994. The music, performed by the two legends, was originally used the following year as part of McCartney's Oobu-Joobu syndicated radio series.

McCartney posted on the official MeatFreeMondays.com website a message about the clip: "With the sad passing of Jeff Beck -- a good friend of mine, and a great great guitar player -- it reminded me of the time we worked together many years ago on a campaign for vegetarianism. It's great guitar playing, cause it's Jeff!"

The clip featuring Beck's voice-over, "Highlights the damage caused by deforestation to create more land for cattle grazing, as well as some of the harmful knock-on effects from this. On top of the benefits to animals and personal health, there are also many environmental advantages to eating more plant-based meals."

Jeff Beck died on January 10th from a bacterial meningitis infection at age 78.

The Beach Boys' 'Surfin' U.S.A.' Turns 60!!!

It was 60 years ago today (January 31st, 1963), that the Beach Boys completed recording their first Top 10 hit, "Surfin' U.S.A." The group's Brian Wilson lifted the tune from Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," and once again was inspired by his younger brother Dennis Wilson's "live every moment as though it's your last" philosophy. Brian, who vicariously used many of Dennis' life experiences to help craft the Beach Boys' sound, wrote the words around Southern California's hippest pastime.

Wilson recalled after the single's release that, "My brother Dennis came home from school one day and said, 'Listen you guys, it looks like surfing's gonna be the next big craze.' He said that I should write a song about it. So I wrote a song just due to Dennis' suggestion." The song was polished off on January 31st, 1963 between 8 and 11 p.m. at Hollywood's Western Recorders. The track features the searing guitar work by Carl Wilson and David Marks, Brian Wilson on bass, piano and organ, Mike Love on lead vocals, and, despite speculation that he didn't actually play on the track, Dennis Wilson on drums. All five are featured on the song's famous "Inside -- Outside -- U.S.A." backing vocals.

We asked Mike Love if he felt that David Marks played an integral part to the band's sound in the studio and on the road: "Well yeah! I mean, he worked his ass off in the original -- in the first four or five albums. Driving around in a U-Haul and a station wagon, settin' up and breaking' down our own equipment -- that's before we found out there was this thing called 'roadies.'"

David Marks says that life on the road during the early days of the group were far from luxurious. He recalls that although the Beach Boys' early-'60s tours were exciting, the physical toll it took on the band was severe: "When we first started in the early-'60s, it was kind of hellish. You really couldn't keep a pace up like that for very long. I mean, you're crowded in a station wagon and you're towing a U-Haul with the amps and you have another car with a couple of the band members. And that's how you travel. You play four sets at a dance and drive 800 miles."

By the end of the 1960's, with their hit-filled days behind them, Brian Wilson admitted that he secretly believed that the Beach Boys still might make the long haul to legendary status: "Actually, looking back on it now, I thought. . . I had the feeling we were going to do it, but I didn't think in my brain that we were going to keep going, going and going for 40 more years. It would be impossible to conceive of."

"Surfin' U.S.A." was released on March 2nd, 1963 and peaked at Number Three on the Billboard Hot 100.

Over the years the song has been a mainstay of the group's shows, usually appearing at the end of the concert or during one of the group's encores.
