Five Autumn Safety Checks Homeowners Should Do Now

We’re one week into fall. Have you done any of this stuff yet? Someone shared a list of five autumn safety checks you might want to do on your home sooner rather than later.
1. Chimneys and heating systems. Check your heating system, or have a professional look for things like gas leaks. If you have a fireplace, nests and other blockages in your chimney can cause a fire once you start using it.
2. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure they’re working, and replace the batteries or entire units if you need to.
3. Roofs and gutters. Look for missing shingles or signs of sagging in your roof. And make sure your gutters aren’t loaded with debris. It’s especially important in places that get lots of snow and ice.
4. Outdoor walkways and lighting. Look for cracks and uneven surfaces that might be a tripping hazard if they get covered in leaves or snow. If you have outdoor lights, make sure they’re all working.
5. Emergency supplies and backup power. It depends on where you live and what the challenges are. But common things to have on hand include flashlights, batteries, blankets, extra water, and nonperishable food.
