Five Signs You’re at a Bad Mexican Restaurant

Happy National Spicy Guacamole Day! Not to be confused with regular Guacamole Day in September. (They’re getting SO specific with these holidays.)

“Business Insider” asked a chef from Mexico City to name the top signs you’re at a BAD Mexican restaurant, or at least not a great one. And the quality of their guac made the list . . .

Red Flag #1: The guacamole is pre-made. The best places make it fresh. In a perfect world, it’s done tableside.

Red Flag #2: The salsa is cold. Salsa loses its flavor when it’s refrigerated. So it’s a sign they don’t know what they’re doing, or they’re making it in huge batches and saving it overnight. Salsa should be warm, or at least room temp.

Red Flag #3: The tortilla chips are thin and brittle. Thicker chips are a sign they made them with fresh corn tortillas.

Red Flag #4: They just updated their menu and added birria. It’s the Mexican stew that’s gotten trendy the last few years. Everyone’s doing it now, but not everyone does it well. It’s a sign they’re just following the trends.

Red Flag #5: It’s not JUST a Mexican place. If they’ve got sushi and pizza too, they’re probably not doing any of it well.
