The Names of Things You Didn’t Even Know Had Names

There’s a post on Instagram that’s going viral from an account called “Goodlife,” and it reveals the names of things you didn’t even know had names.

Some of these I’d never heard before. But you learn something new every day.

1. Chalaza . . . That’s the white cord holding an egg’s yolk in place. Some people call it the umbilical cord.

2. Chad . . . They’re the paper cutouts made by a hole punch. But if you are old enough to live through Bush v. Gore, you’ll definitely remember “hanging chads.”

3. Octothorpe . . . That’s the real name for the hashtag symbol.

4. Rasceta . . . Those are the creases across the inside of your wrist.

5. Knurling . . . That’s the crisscross texture on weight bars that help your grip.

6. Lunula . . . That’s the pale half-moon at the base of your nail.

7. Glabella . . . It’s the smooth area between your eyebrows.

8. Drupelets . . .Those are the tiny beads that make up a raspberry.
