Four Things to Look Forward to in October

New month! Here are a few things to look forward to in October.
1. In sports: The MLB Wild Card games continue this week, with Game 1 of the World Series set for the 24th. Also, the NHL season gets started next Tuesday . . . and the new NBA season tips off October 21st.
2. In movies: The Rock’s new MMA flick “The Smashing Machine” opens this Friday . . . Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the screen for the first time in seven years in “Anemone” the same day (uh-NEM-uh-nee) . . .
. . . “Tron: Ares” hits theaters on the 10th . . . Guillermo del Toro’s new “Frankenstein” movie opens in limited release on the 17th before hitting Netflix next month . . .
. . . and Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear” stars in “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” on the 24th.
3. On TV: “Abbott Elementary” returns tonight . . . “SNL” returns for its 51st season this Saturday . . . “Grey’s Anatomy” is back on the 9th . . . “9-1-1: Nashville” premieres the same night . . . “Elsbeth” returns on the 12th . . . Tim Robinson’s new show “The Chair Company” hits HBO Max the same day . . .
. . . “NCIS” returns the 14th . . . “9-1-1” is back on the 16th . . . “Tracker” returns the 19th . . . and season four of “The Witcher” hits Netflix October 30th.
4. And finally, the holidays: The big ones are Yom Kippur, which starts tonight . . . Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the 13th . . . and Halloween on the 31st.
Lesser-known holidays this month include International Beer and Pizza Day on the 9th . . . National No Bra Day on the 13th . . . and National Cat Day on the 29th.
