Jeff Beck Dead At 78

Legendary guitarist Jeff Beck died on January 10th at age 78, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

His family issued a statement, which reads: "It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck's passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss."

Jeff Beck will forever be remembered for his pioneering work in the Yardbirds after replacing Eric Clapton; the Jeff Beck Group -- which originally featured Rod Stewart and Ron Wood; Beck, Bogart & Appice, and on his own.

Jeff Beck's former Yardbirds bandmate Jimmy Page told us a while back that Jeff Beck's influence cannot be overstated: "He's been instrumental in pioneering a whole blueprints that was totally unique to him for everyone else to learn from. I mean, no one's ever equaled what Jeff's done, but he's -- he really shifted the whole sound and face of the electric guitar music, y'know?"

Jeff Beck said on more than one occasion that he'd rather work on his cars than be in the studio. We pressed him as to why his albums seem to be coming out so quickly these days. He said it's a combination of a sense of his own mortality, as well as a realization that his fans want to hear new music from him: "Time's getting on, isn't it? People are dying, and (I) look 'round and go, 'What the hell's going on here,' y'know? And I enjoy playing, and, y'know, there's no real excuse for me not to be doing something. People seem to enjoy what I do."

Out now is Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp's joint album, titled, 18. The pair mixed new originals with covers by the likes of John Lennon, the Beach Boys, Dennis Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the Velvet Underground, Killing Joke, the Everly Brothers, and more.

U2 Reveals Details To Upcoming 'Songs Of Surrender' Album

The full tracklisting to U2's new album Songs Of Surrender has been announced. The 40-track collection is based around the concept of Bono's recent memoir and is broken down as a two-record set, with each member being represented by a single side of music.

Songs Of Surrender, which drops on March 17th will be available as a full 40-track digital set; a limited edition 40-track double CD with hardback deluxe book; and a limited edition 40-track four-vinyl collection.

The Edge spoke about Songs Of Surrender in the album's official announcement:

Music allows you to time travel, and we became curious to find out what it would be like to bring our early songs back with us to the present day and give them the benefit, or otherwise, of a 21st century reimagining.

What started out as an experiment quickly developed into a personal obsession as so many of our songs yielded to a new interpretation. Intimacy replaced post punk urgency. New tempos, new keys, and in some cases new chords and new lyrics arrived. A great song, it turns out is kind of indestructible.

The process of selecting which songs to revisit started with a series of demos. I looked at how a song would hang together if all but the bare essential elements were taken away. The other main aim was to find ways to bring intimacy into the songs, as most of them were originally written with live concert performance in mind.

Reviewing these sketch recordings with producer Bob Ezrin, it was very easy to see the ones that worked straight off the bat and those that needed more work. We all got into the sensibility of less is more.

Bono explained that at the end of the day, it's the connection between his music and the listeners that makes it matter: "That is, y'know, (laughs) my drug of choice. That's for me, the thing. I cannot believe you hear this melody line in your head and you, sort of, take it down and you find words for it and arrangement for it -- and the next thing y'know, you can be in a car in Tokyo, and it's on the radio. That's really my, my drug of choice. And songs are everything, really, to us."

Demi Lovato's Bondage Ad Banned In U.K. For Blasphemy

Ads for Demi Lovato's Holy Fvck album has been banned in the U.K. for being blasphemous.

After posters of Lovato in full-body bondage laying on a crucifix-shaped bed starting popping up in London, England's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) got involved. According to the publication, The Drum, it was too offensive to Christians and considered inappropriate for children.

The regulator stated that linking sexuality to the sacred Christian symbol as well as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ would cause "serious offense" to members of the religious group.

Humanist U.K. is challenging the ruling, stating that the decision was "unacceptable stifling of the right to freedom of expression."

When the album was released in the U.K. last year, it debuted in the Top 10.

Latest Bob Dylan 'Bootleg Series' Dives Into 'Time Out Of Mind' Sessions

Bob Dylan fans are in for a special treat with the January 27th release Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17. The new five-CD or 10-LP set includes a newly-remixed version of the Grammy Award winning 1997 Time Out Of Mind album by famed engineer Michael Brauer, accompanied by no less than three other discs of alternate versions, outtakes, live takes, and a bonus disc including previously released material from the critically acclaimed The Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs: Rare and Unreleased 1989–2006.

Both fans and media alike have always asked Bob Dylan his thoughts on the state of the world and life in general. A while back, during an interview with ABC's 20/20, he tried to sum up some type of philosophy that suited the way he lived: "'Don't know if its's gonna stop or not stop. I don't take anything for granted. You can only do so much, y'know? Who knows what's lurking behind the corner at any time (that) may come up? So, we can have these big plans and dreams, but there's no guarantee that any of it is gonna come off. I just go from day-to-day and keep at it."

The Chainsmokers Share Crazy Break-Up Stories And Threesomes

On a recent podcast, The Chainsmokers talked about sex and relationships. Member Alex Pall shared a story about a girl he dated that his mom hated.

He said, while he was touring, he started getting texts from his girlfriend that didn't make sense. Out of the blue, she would write things like "You're a f–king a–hole " and would start an argument and then disappear for days, but never tell him why.

Then one day, Pall was sitting at his kitchen table and saw movement out of the corner of his eye. It was a motion-sensor camera intended to watch the dog and dispense treats. He later found out that his girlfriend had connected the camera to spy on him.

She had even blacked out the recording light with a marker and covered it with a piece of electric tape.

When he realized what had been going on for 7 months, he never confronted her, just broke up with her.

Flashback: Elvis Records 'Don't Be Cruel'

It was 66 years ago today (January 12th, 1957) that Elvis Presley recorded "All Shook Up," which went on to become his sixth Number One hit, topping the charts for nine weeks. Elvis recorded the song at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, during a three-day session, which included both gospel recordings and songs eventually featured in his second motion picture, Loving You.

Elvis and his band, which included guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, drummer DJ Fontana, and backing vocalists the Jordanaires, took ten takes to perfect the song. The unique tapping heard on the track is Presley's hand slapping the back of his Martin acoustic guitar, with his ring finger accentuating the beat.

"All Shook Up" went on to be ranked the Number One single of 1957. The tune was featured in "The King's" setlists extensively throughout the '70s -- one of the few of Elvis' '50s hits to make the transition into his Las Vegas-era shows.

Just prior to his 2018 death, DJ Fontana, the last member to join Elvis' original band -- recalled meeting Elvis and the group: "They had worked all through Mississippi and Alabama, they were just gettin' started. And then they come to Shreveport, Louisiana, this hayride down there, y'know? It was a thing, like the Grand Ole Opry is today. They come in and say, 'Hey, we need a drummer' they said, 'You play?" I said, 'Well, yeah, I guess so. That's why I'm here. That's what they hired me for.' I just learned a lesson, they had such a unique sound -- that Sun (Records) thing, y'know? I thought, I'll just stay out of their way, give 'em a little rhythm back with brush and stick and be quiet; so I guess they appreciated that."

Metallica's Megaforce Founder Tribute Show Uploaded

Metallica's special November 6th concert Hollywood, Florida's Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has made its way online. The show was a tribute to late-Megaforce Records founder Jon "Jonny Z" Zazula and his wife Marsha Zazula.

The band honored the couple by performing only elections from the band's first two albums released on Megaforce -- 1983's Kill 'Em All and 1984's Ride The Lightning. As a further nod to the band's early champions, Raven -- also originally signed to Megaforce back in the day -- opened the show.

Blabbermouth reported at the time, "Jonny Z died in February at the age of 69. Jonny died of complications of the rare neuropathic disorder chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and osteopenia. Marsha passed away of cancer in January of last year. A portion of the proceeds from this show are being donated in Jonny and Marsha's name to MusiCares, with Metallica's charity All Within My Hands once again supporting Feeding South Florida with a donation following the show."

The modern era of Metallica has marked a far happier time for its bandmembers both on and off the stage. Lars Ulrich recently told us that the group tries to have a good time these days whether its recording or touring: "It's just about, like, having fun and wanting to do it, and as long as everybody gets along, and as long as we come up with s*** that keeps challenging ourselves and is fun to play and it's, like, a good vibe, y'know. . . and then going out and playing, like, 15 nutty shows in Europe in front of, like, a gazillion people, and playing, like, y'know, 'Orion' in its entirety or, you know, 'Disposable Heroes,' it's all fun."

Metallica kicks off its European tour on April 27th at Amsterdam's Johan Cruijff Arena.

Metallica's February 6th, 2022 setlist in Hollywood, Florida:

"Creeping Death"
"Ride The Lightning"
"Motorbreath"

"Metal Militia"
"For Whom The Bell Tolls"
"Whiplash"
"Fade To Black"
"Seek & Destroy"

Gwen Stefani Claims 'I'm Japanese' In Defense Of Her Harajuku Era

Gwen Stefani stands by her Harajuku era.

In a new interview with Allure about her vegan beauty line GXVE, the No Doubt singer opened up about criticisms of cultural appropriation. It began with the Japanese artwork used to market her 2004 debut studio album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., and continued with the 2008 launch of her Harajuku Lovers fragrance.

She told the outlet she had a revelation when she finally visited Japan for the first time, "I said, 'My God, I'm Japanese and I didn't know it.'"

The Voice judge added, "If people are going to criticize me for being a fan of something beautiful and sharing that, then I just think that doesn't feel right. I think it was a beautiful time of creativity… a time of the ping-pong match between Harajuku culture and American culture."

She elaborated further: "It should be okay to be inspired by other cultures because if we're not allowed then that's dividing people, right?"

U2 Announces Surprise New Album For March

U2 has announced a surprise new album, titled Songs Of Surrender, which re-imagines 40 songs from across the band's catalogue. The new set, which drops on St. Patrick's Day -- March 17th -- is a companion piece to frontman Bono's memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. Although the band posted a teaser via YouTube, no tracklist has been announced, but it's generally assumed to follow the trajectory of Bono's book.

Rolling Stone reported: "Some select U2 fans have started receiving handwritten letters from the band that offer a bit more insight into Songs Of Surrender. One letter, signed by The Edge and shared on the fan account, U2Songs, reads in part: 'The fact is that most of our work was written and recorded when we were a bunch of very young men. Those songs mean something quite different to us now. Some have grown with us. Some we have outgrown, but we have not lost sight of what propelled us to write those songs in the first place.'"

Bono has always had a higher profile than his bandmates, and The Edge told us that the other members of the band are comfortable with the role their singer plays outside the group: "We certainly debate. Certainly early on we did a lot more because I felt personally that there was a risk of things being misinterpreted or his intentions being called into question. But I think at this point in time, y'know, it's so well established what he's up to and what his agenda is. I don't think there's much chance of people misinterpreting or, y'know, getting confused or let down."

We've got, like, 12 studio albums, or something, that we're actually gonna be out there promoting. That's really cool. That's totally exciting that we can finally bring that to people in a different format. The Doobie Brothers Roll Out First 2023 American Dates

The Doobie Brothers have just tagged two Hawaiian dates onto the end of their upcoming Australasian tour. March and April will see the Doobies -- including co-founders Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons -- along with returning member Michael McDonald -- hitting Singapore, Australia, and Japan.

The new dates are May 2nd and 5th, at Kahului, Hawaii's Waikiki Shell, with tickets going sale to the general public starting Friday, January 13th at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.

We asked guitarist Tom Johnston if incorporating Michael McDonald's material back into the band's repertoire took some extra elbow-grease for the group: "Well, it always needs to be rehearsed, (whether) if Mike's here or not. We always rehearse a lot before going out. Mike brings another facet musically to the show, which is frankly, I think, kinda cool. He brings some depth -- a little more depth -- I should say, and it goes in a different direction. So, what you do is you place those songs accordingly through the set and mix it up with the other songs and then people get, as I said, the full aspect of what the band has done over the years."

Robert Plant Credits Phil Collins For Easing Him Into Solo Career

Robert Plant credits Phil Collins for easing him into his solo career. 30 years after his second solo set, The Principle Of Moments, Plant looked band on his celebrated second act recalling to Vulture where he was at following the 1980 death of his Led Zeppelin bandmate, John Bonham: "After John passed away and there was no Led Zeppelin, there had to be a way to go. I floundered around a lot because until I was 32, I was in some kind of wild and absurd adventure. I went through all that stuff. I'll write with other people. It's a very intimate thing to do. It's hard for anybody to expose themselves musically. Other people with me, and me with other people. I have a lot of songs under my belt, which I co-wrote with the members of Zeppelin. It was a lot to live up to. I had a lot of people who gave me support and strength around that time, so I suppose the first two albums were driven by great friends."

Plant went on to recall, "Phil Collins especially was a driving force and had positive energy with the first record, Pictures At Eleven. . . With Phil, it wasn't so much advice as encouragement and consideration. He was taking no prisoners. He would only allow himself a short amount of time to come to the studio in Wales and make it work. Nobody was hiding behind the performance. Then he came on tour with me and basically said, 'Robert, the guy that sat behind you for all those years was my hero.' That was it. He said, 'Anything I can do to help you to get back into fighting shape again, I'm here.' That was at the time when 'In The Air Tonight' came out. Yet he was still mixing and working with me while kicking off a particularly impressive and successful time."

Robert Plant remembered Phil Collins' work ethic and belief in his new material was unyielding: "I mean, he was there and he used to come down to Rockfield (Studios), where we (used to) record and he'd say: ‘I've got four days, okay? Let's go do the whole album' -- I said, ‘done.' And we'd just work it and work it and work it. And he was, he had this funny look on his -- his eyebrow used to go up in the air. He put his drumsticks under his arm and a towel around his neck, and he'd listen to the playback and he'd go: ‘Bass drum's too fast. Let's do it again. Gotta get it right, we've got to get it right.' So we got it right and in doing so, I started dragging myself out of the shadows bit by bit. And we did great stuff and Phil toured with us for a couple of tours and we had a great time."

Billy Joel And Stevie Nicks Announce Eighth New Stadium Show

Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks have just announced their eighth 2023 joint stadium show. The pair of Rock Hall of Famers will now play on November 10th at Minneapolis' U.S. Bank Stadium.

As it stands now, in addition to the just-announced Minnesota gig, Billy and Stevie are set for major stadium shows in California, Texas, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, and Massachusetts.

Billy Joel told us he feels lucky to still be performing at the top of his game these days: "I kind of have a split opinion about it. Part of me thinks it's absurd. I'm 73-years-old and I'm doin' the same gig I was doin' when I was 16. Y'know, this is a job for a young person and I am now considered elderly and I'm still doin' the same crazy-ass job -- so, that part of it is kinda absurd. The other part of it to me is it's wonderful. I've picked a great job to have. They're payin' me all kinds of money, the audiences are bigger than they ever were, people are still comin' to see me -- and there's a lot of young people out in the crowd, who somehow know my stuff and that's wonderful! I'm a lucky guy."

Stevie Nicks believes the art of songwriting is an act of healing for both the creator and the listener: "To me, the music is writing songs and that is to be able to write something that maybe at a time in somebody else's life, they need a little help or a little inspiration, or something, that they would sit down and listen to something I wrote and it would just either make them feel a little better or they'd be able to go 'Somebody else's been there, too -- and that helps me.'"

The BTS singer said in a pre-recorded YouTube video posted to the band's Bantam TV channel Monday (January 9th), "Hello everyone, this is Jin of BTS. I won't be a civilian by the time the video is out. But I am here in front of the camera because I wanted to leave you something, even if it is just leaving a message.

"I may not be by your side, but I'll go looking for you soon, if you just wait a little. I'll be back soon. That's all for today. Next time when I have the time, I'll share another video."

He began his 18-21 month service in December.
