Quick Takes: Perry Farrell, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss, Wolfgang Van Halen

  • Due to a recent injury, Perry Farrell and Jane's Addiction will be sitting out of this week's shows on their joint "Spirit On Fire" tour with Smashing Pumpkins. Farrell and the band are hoping to be back on stage this Saturday (October 29th) at Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
    • Farrell posted a message to fans on social media, which reads in part: "After Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, I suffered an injury that resulted in my inability to perform. I have since been in pain and discomfort and have been receiving rigorous physio therapy that has done wonders. Due to doctors (sic) orders, we regrettably and forcibly have to cancel the following shows, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, as well as Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City. Our friends, Our Lady Of Peace will be covering the next three shows as we aim to rejoin the tour this Saturday in Cleveland. I am filled with sadness and frustration to have to announce this, but I have to mend in order to continue the tour and get back on stage."

  • Red Hot Chili Peppers have scored a pair of back-to-back chart toppers on Billboard's Top Album Sales chart. The placings mark the first time a band has enjoyed two chart-toppers in a row since 2005 when System Of A Down hit the top spot with both Mezmerize and then Hypnotize.
  • The band's new set, Return Of The Dream Canteen returns the band to Number One after Unlimited Love held down the top spot earlier this year.
    • Unlimited Love has fared better on Billboard 200, which snagged the band Number One honors, with Return Of The Dream Canteen having to settle for Top Three status. (Ultimate-Guitar.com)

  • Last Saturday night (October 22nd), Kiss performed an ultra-private gig for tobacco's biggest company, Philip Morris International. According to reports, the band played a small club in Austin, Texas called the Vulcan Gas Company for only about 100 guests. The entire performance has since found its way online. • Wolfgang Van Halen posted a photo of his father's 1962 Gibson SG Jr., which he's used on Mammoth WVH's second album currently in production. The guitar, which had its lower horn sawed off by Eddie Van Halen in the early-1980's, was used by the late-guitar legend for the slide guitar part on 1982's "Dirty Movies" from Van Halen's classic Diver Down collection.

Bono Says U2 Is Sitting On New Album

Bono has revealed that U2 has a new album ready for release that the band will hold off on issuing. The legendary singer spoke to The New York Times ahead of the November 1st publication of his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, and shed light on the new album -- which will not be the band's next release.

Bono explained, "We have almost finished this album called Songs Of Ascent, which we're not putting out. We're going to put out a rock 'n' roll album. So we're not putting this out, but I'm telling you it's awesome . . . The feeling of The Edge's and my songwriting together is at a very high level. My phone here is packed with new songs. We were tempted to put them out -- out of competition. But we felt that the material was so strong that it deserved time to make sure people heard about them as well as heard them. When we're in the room together with Larry (Mullen, Jr.) and Adam (Clayton), it's great. I'm excited. . . There's about 20 of them finished."

Bono characterized what he wants the next U2 album to sound like instead: "A noisy, uncompromising, unreasonable guitar album. In among that unreasonableness, it is likely that I will put the part of me, the anger that hasn't been managed, to good use."

Bono went on to say, "I would not be surprised if U2 makes the best album of its life in the next (few) years. Not because the world needs it, but because the band might. That's a great reason to go into the studio."

Bono explained that U2 has always gone into the studio with a certain amount of reverence and respect for the creative process: "It is a big deal, and it's a very, very big deal for us. When we go into a studio, it's kind of like -- it's a temple, y'know, it's a place where we really have to give ourselves and get the music. And we don't do it lightly."

He would come home from the Air Force every day, take off his uniform, lay on the couch, and put on a Johnny Cash record. I just loved it, y'know? And I once asked him, 'Why do you like Johnny Cash so much?' And he said, 'Because he sings the truth.' And Elvis, too, y'know, (guitarist) Scotty Moore and those guys. Those were the records that, he just wore 'em out."

He explained that a huge part of his success was believing in himself and Poison's talent: "So I go to L.A. -- we're starving -- and the person I bet on, I bet on myself. We have no money, and we would get offered these publishing deals; they would hear songs like 'Every Rose (Has It's Thorns)' that have sold seven, eight, 10 million copies of these singles, and people were like, 'Hey, we'll give you. . . ' Now, 'member, this is a starving musician I'm 'starving' starving and they offer -- they say, 'We're gonna give you 100 grand and we'll own your publishing' -- and you're going, I didn't even know what 100 grand was then -- I'm like, 'That's a lot of money.' But then I bet on myself, and I said no. I want to be in control of my career, I wanna be in control of my music, where it goes, what it sounds like -- for better or for worse."

Flashback: The Rolling Stones Debut On 'The Ed Sullivan Show'

It was 58 years ago today (October 25th, 1964) that the Rolling Stones made their debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Stones' debut was nothing like the Beatles' celebrated first appearance the previous February, when they performed five songs. The Stones, who were already on their second U.S. tour of the year, performed two songs in less than seven minutes -- their latest hit "Time Is On My Side," and a cover of Chuck Berry's "Around And Around."

The Ed Sullivan Show wasn't the Stones' first U.S. TV performance. They had performed on Dean Martin's Hollywood Palace and The Mike Douglas Show during their first swing through the States the previous June. But it was during the Stones' 1964 Ed Sullivan Show performance that the majority of America got their first glimpse of the unruly Stones -- with Mick Jagger dressing down in a ragged sweater and unwashed hair, and guitarist Brian Jones glaring menacingly toward the cameras.

Well over 50 years into the band's career, Mick Jagger recalled how shocked the entertainment world was in the early-'60s as the Stones redefined the rules of the game: "The way that show-business was in those days was very narrow, and you were supposed to behave in a certain way, pretty much goody-two-shoes. So, if you didn't behave like that completely, you were, y'know, on the edge of it. So, it was another time. Y'know, the early, early days."

Martin Scorsese directed the Stones' 2008 concert film Shine A Light and has included numerous Stones songs in his movies, including Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed. We asked him if he places the Stones' music in his films because it represents the violence he witnessed on the New York City streets as a youth: "I don't know if I can make any direct associations to it. At times their music, it dealt with aspects of the life around me that I was associated with or saw, or was experiencing, and trying to make sense of. And so it was tougher, it had an edge, beautiful and honest -- and brutal at times (laughs), and powerful."

Carly Simon Mourns The Death Of Her Sisters One Day Apart

Carly Simon is mourning the loss of her two sisters who died of cancer this week only one day apart. CNN reported Joanna Simon died on October 19th of thyroid cancer at age 85 -- with Lucy Simon passing the next day of metastatic breast cancer at age 82.

The Simon's brother, noted photographer, Peter Simon, died in 2018 at the age of 71. The Simon's are the children of Simon & Schuster co-founder Richard L. Simon.

On November 5th, Carly Simon will be inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, which will be held at L.A.'s Microsoft Theater.

Carly Simon released a statement on her sisters' passing, which reads:

I am filled with sorrow to speak about the passing of Joanna and Lucy Simon. Their loss will be long and haunting. As sad as this day is, it's impossible to mourn them without celebrating their incredible lives that they lived.

We were three sisters who not only took turns blazing trails and marking courses for one another, we were each other's secret shares. The co-keepers of each other's memories.

I have no words to explain the feeling of suddenly being the only remaining direct offspring of Richard and Andrea Simon. They touched everyone they knew and those of us they've left behind will be lucky and honored to carry their memories forward.

Brian Johnson Recalls The Love Fest At Taylor Hawkins Tribute

AC/DC frontman admitted the initial Taylor Hawkins memorial concert at London's Wembley Stadium was just as emotional offstage as the fans thought. Johnson just published his latest book and first official memoir titled, The Lives Of Brian.

At the September 3rd Taylor Hawkins tribute at Wembley Stadium, Brian Johnston took the stage with Foo Fighters, Metallica's Lars Ulrich on drums, with the Darkness' Justin Hawkins joining in for a double dose of AC/DC classics -- "Back In Black" and "Let There Be Rock."

We caught up to Brian Johnson and asked him to descibe the scene for what fans didn't get to see: "Aw -- y'kiddin' me? It was brilliant! I never felt so much love backstage from everybody for one man and his family were there and were hugged -- and his sons. Just old friends. . . Y'know, I saw Joe Walsh comin' offstage and I went 'Joe Walsh! You didn't tell me you were here!' And he came over and he hugged us and he said, 'Brian Johnson -- now I know everything gon' be alright!' I was ready to rock, and y'know, young Lars (Ulrich) was on the drums there. Ah -- it meant a lot to me and, y'know, young Dave (Grohl) was just sittin', smilin' his ass off."

Kanye West News Roundup

VOGUE WILL NO LONGER WORK WITH KANYE WEST

A source has revealed that Vogue will no longer work with Kanye West after his comments about Jewish people. A source told Page Six that the magazine's Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour "has had enough," adding, "She has made it very clear inside Vogue that Kanye is no longer part of the inner circle."

Last week, Balenciaga announced that they were ending their business relationship with Ye.

KANYE WEST ADDRESSES BACKLASH, SAYS HE REFUSES TO BE CANCELED

Meanwhile, TMZ ran into Ye on Friday night (October 21st), who addressed the backlash he's been facing. He said,"I ain't losing no money. The day I was taken off the Balenciaga site, that was one of the most freeing days."

Ye added that people are cutting ties with him in order to "score points: assuming that they are being asked "to not do business with" him because they're "trying to mute" him. He added that he refuses to be canceled, saying, "We here, baby, we ain't going nowhere."

He also discussed comments he made about Jewish people, saying,"I want to talk about the Jewish comment, it's actually proven the exact point that I made." He added that his comments have been an attempt to unite the human race as one. He explained, "It's going to take all of us to come together. We gotta get the truth before we can get the love if not we are just loving the lies."

He continued, "They never expected someone to have the platform. It's not that anyone is afraid, they're afraid of us not being afraid anymore. They can't use all the tactics. I'm talking about my life has been threatened for having a political opinion. To wear the wrong color hat or the audacity of me as a black man to have a White Lives Matter T-shirt. I've seen white people wearing Black Lives Matter T-shirts. it's pretty one-sided if you think about it."

Ye also addressed the possibility of Adidas also dropping him, saying that they "are going through legal right now so anything can happen."

YE WANTS TO BUILD HIS OWN 'YECOSYSTEM' MINI-CITY

In related news, sources close to Ye says he has filed several trademark applications that would allow him to launch his own, self-contained mini-city. According to Rolling Stone, he's planning to call it the "Yecosystem." The city will have its own stores selling Kanye branded food and beverages. He plans to have the first campus up-and-running by the end of the year and open more across the country.

Among the trademarks filed are names like Yzyverse, Yxyverse, and Yeezyverse.

The Police's 'Every Breath You Take' Video Passes One Billion YouTube Plays

Nearly 40 years since the video first premiered on MTV, the Police's 1983 clip for "Every Breath You Take" has surpassed one billion YouTube plays.

Variety reported on the Godley & Creme-directed clip: "'Every Breath You Take,' which was added to the platform in 2010, is the 225th video to join YouTube's Billion Views Club and the seventh video from the 1980's to achieve this milestone. The Sting-penned ballad was originally released as part of the band's final studio album, 1983's Synchronicity."

Back in 2019, "Every Breath You Take" was cited as the most performed song at the BMI Pop Awards for a whopping 15 million radio plays.

"Every Breath You Take" was the lead single from Syncronicity and released ahead of the set on May 20th, 1983. The song went on to become the band's biggest hit and topped the charts for eight weeks. "Every Breath You Take" went on to score the band the coveted 1984 Grammy for Record Of The Year.

Guitarist Andy Summers recalled to us how the Police always were always able to record their albums very quickly: "We just didn't need that much time. We were a very hot playing band. We were barely ever off the road, so we were always totally into playing. We were just red-hot playing with one another. So all this thing about 'working it all up' -- I've never understood why rock bands needed a year to make an album. . . I don't get it -- can you play or not? We'd work these things out fast, y'know? And Sting was a very good songwriter so the songs would come in and we had a good structure to work with. And then we would just 'Police-ify' them until they started to really sound tight."

Sting was able to write at least one instant game changing pop standard on every one of the Police albums between 1978 and 1983. He explained to us how that he, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland always tried to make the group's albums enjoyable on several different levels: "There were layers there, y'know, and all that stuff was already inherent in the music, but you didn't really have to respond to it, because it was loud and raucous and fun. But again, I was trying to unveil something underneath that. I wanted some substance to it that would intrigue me and maybe a few other people. I just kept doing that."

Sting is currently on tour in Europe and performs tomorrow night (October 25th) in Milan, Italy at Mediolanum Forum.

His next North American shows will be on January 9th and 10th with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Pittsburgh's Heinz Hall.

Matt Skiba Reveals That He Recorded An Unreleased Album With Blink-182

Matt Skiba revealed that he recorded "eight or nine" songs with Blink-182, which may never be released, now that Tom DeLonge has rejoined the band.

May Pang's John Lennon Doc Set For Grammy Museum Showing

John Lennon's former girlfriend May Pang will be screening her new documentary, The Lost Weekend: A Love Story, on November 18th in Newark, New Jersey at the Recording Academy's Grammy Museum Experience at the Prudential Center. Pang will also take part in a Q&A with noted Beatles scholar and author Kenneth Womack.

The new doc chronicles Lennon's 18-month affair with Pang during his and wife Yoko Ono's separation during the period dubbed, "The Lost Weekend."

The film, which was directed by Eve Brandstein, Richard Kaufman, and Stuart Samuels, features interviews with photographer Bob Gruen, Apple Records manager Tony King, solo-Beatles drummer of choice Jim Keltner, along with John Lennon's older son, Julian Lennon. No streaming or wide release date has been announced for the film.

Pang, who prior to her affair with John Lennon, served as his and Yoko Ono's personal assistant, and was responsible for coordinating the production of such Lennon albums as Mind Games, Walls And Bridges, and Rock 'N' Roll, along with Harry Nilsson's Lennon-produced album Pussycats. Although her relationship with Lennon ended publicly in 1975, according to Pang, the couple remained periodic lovers through 1978 and were in contact until the spring of 1980.

She's published two books focusing on her time with Lennon -- the salacious 1983 memoir, Loving John, and the 2010 photo book, Instamatic Karma.

During the recording of Harry Nilsson's 1974 Pussy Cats album, John Lennon -- who produced the set -- had Nilsson, Ringo Starr, and Keith Moon all share a beachfront Santa Monica house together. May Pang explained why some of the richest and most hard partying rock stars ended up all hunkering down under the same roof: "John thought of it, it was his idea. Because, he said, if he left it to everyone -- ‘cause he had not spent that much time out in L.A., and he realized that if we couldn't get everybody to the session on time, unlike New York, then all was lost. So he said, ‘Let's pool everybody in, into the house.' And this way, I was driving a group, somebody else was driving a group, so that two cars would be driving and everybody would be getting to the studio on time. He just wanted everybody to be there."
