Sitting Too Little Throughout Your Day Might Be Just as Damaging as Sitting Too Much

For years, we’ve been told that sitting too much is bad for you. But a new study suggests that there’s more to the story.

Researchers followed more than 41,000 adults in China for nearly 12 years and found the lowest risk of death was among people who sat about four hours a day.

Surprisingly, those who sat less than two hours daily had a higher risk. But there’s a catch. More than 60% of those people worked physically demanding jobs like farming and construction.

The study found that replacing some activity with rest was better for manual laborers . . . and people who sat for four or more hours a day benefited from swapping out sitting for exercise.

This doesn’t mean that everyone should sit more. It’s just that health advice should be tailored to a person’s lifestyle rather than applying the same rule to everyone.
