Axl Rose Pays Tribute To Lisa Marie Presley

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose paid tribute to the late-Lisa Marie Presley, sharing his memories of his friend to People.com. In the exclusive interview, Rose said, "I will miss my friend Lisa. Her passing, just as her son's, or as a kid, her father's, doesn't seem real. Lisa loved her family, all her children. My heart goes out to them."

Rose, who stayed in close touch with Lisa Marie after the 2020 suicide of her 27-year-old son Benjamin Keough, added, "Her son's passing was shocking, tragic and devastating. It was something that, at a point, you obviously didn't want to bring up but awkwardly would in an effort to let her know you cared and were thinking about her, about them, and to be of any comfort one could, which she appreciated. (I tried) to let her know of the constant thinking about her, them, and wanting the best for her."

Axl explained, "I wanted her to be happy, to feel good about things, at least as much as one could under the circumstances. And really, with the closeness of their relationship, one could hope -- but truthfully, it didn't seem, at least without some real time passing, a reasonable reality. What comes after life who knows but I'd like to think they're together, her and Ben with her father and Ben's grandfather in some way, and Lisa, and the most important men in her life are happy together."

Rose revealed that he was able to talk in-depth about Elvis Presley with Lisa Marie: "I was fortunate enough to hear about her father and her experiences and memories with him first hand. She came to shows and we hung out backstage. It was always great to see her and she was always fun n' super supportive."

He went on to say that she took great pride in the way her father's story was told in Bad Luhrman's award-winning Elvis biopic, recalling, "Over the last few months we spoke a lot about the Elvis movie which she was very proud of, and especially that it touched on her father's love since early childhood of black gospel, and later, the blues. She was very nervous at first of how the public would react to the film because it was so important to her to do right by her father."

Janet Jackson Sued By Business Managers For 'Unpaid Services'

Reports say that Janet Jackson is being sued by her business managers for "unpaid services." According to The Blast and RadarOnline, the music icon is accused of owing business managers up to $238,593.88. The lawsuit is filed against Janet Jackson and some of her businesses dating back to 2017. The lawsuit alleges that Janet Jackson was in a "business management services agreement" in August of 2017 with David Weise and Associates, a company that describes itself as "the largest business management firm in the country."

The company has accused Jackson of refusing to pay the full amount owed for the work they put in during her career.

Kenny Loggins Announces Final Tour

Kenny Loggins has announced his final road trek, dubbed the "This Is It" tour. As it stands now, the initial 11-city run kicks off on March 10th at Sarasota, Florida's Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and wraps on October 27th in Inglewood, California at the YouTube Theater. More dates will be announced for 2023.

Loggins said in the tour's announcement:

It's been an amazing journey since starting with Jimmy Messina in 1971, and I'm fortunate to have had such a long touring career. I don't see this as the end of my professional career, but certainly a halt to the grind of major touring. After spending a lifetime on the road, I want to have more time at home.

I'll be playing songs that I feel sum up the emotional story of my music. This will include 90 percent of the hits and 10 or so percent of the deeper cuts.

Kenny Loggins says that despite all the jets and first class flights he's taken on the road over the years, to him nothing compares to traveling with his band on the tour bus: "Y'know what I love about the tour bus? We don't have to deal with airports. If you've got a nine o'clock departure it's okay if you leave at nine-thirty. You can get on the bus, you're still gonna do all right. And you hang with the guys, and catch up on movies, and just catch up on each other's lives, and maybe even work on a tune or two on the back of the bus."

Loggins admitted to us that over 40 years after the movie premiered, his classic tune "I'm Alright" is forever tied to Caddyshack: "I first saw Caddyshack as a rough cut, they didn't have an ending at the time. I loved it and immediately got it. And I wrote a couple of tunes for that soundtrack album, and 'I'm Alright' being the best known one. Everywhere I go, somebody's gonna go 'Cannonball it, man.'"

The Rolling Stones Tease 'GRRR Live!!! Set With New Video

The Rolling Stones have just dropped the live video for "Wild Horses" as featured on the band's latest archival set, titled GRR Live! The multimedia release drops on February 10th and was recorded on December 15th, 2012 during the band's "50 And Counting" tour stop at Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center.

For Keith Richards, hitting the stage still remains a reason for being: "It's this kaleidoscopic, sort of, mayhem. You only have -- it's no two takes in that game, y'know? You're on stage, you're on, you can't stop. I think what you put it down to the incredible energy of the audience. Y'know, they overwhelmingly outnumber us, but we're the focal point."

The Stones released their most recent greatest hits set, titled, GRRR! on November 13th, 2012. The career-spanning collection was released in several editions -- including a three-CD 50 track version and a four-CD Super-Deluxe version featuring 80 tracks.

Most notably, GRRR! featured two then-new studio tracks -- "Gloom And Doom" and "One Last Shot."

Beatles, Stones, Elton, & Queen Insider Finally Tells All

Tony King, one of rock's most important behind-the-scenes figures of the last century, will finally publish his memoirs on January 31st, titled The Tastemaker. In the early-1960's, King started off at Decca Records, before moving on to work for manager Andrew Loog-Oldham at the Rolling Stones' offices. He went on to become the U.S. manager of the Beatles' Apple Records, and later the director of promotions for RCA, and an executive for Elton John's Rocket Records. He remains a close confidante of both Elton and Mick Jagger and was among Freddie Mercury's best friends.
During a chat with The Guardian to promote his new memoir, he shed light on his close friend John Lennon's personality: "I knew him in the 1960's and he could be very cutting. I was intimidated by him. I went to L.A. (in the 1970's) expecting this sharp-tongued Liverpudlian, and instead I got this really soft, vulnerable man. I couldn't believe it."

Tony King remained among Freddie Mercury's very small inner circle through his 1991 death, and recalled, "(He was) so brave. Shopping until the end, buying up paintings in Christie's auctions. I used to lie on the bed next to him and hold his hand, which was stone-cold, like a bone. They'd bring in the paintings he'd bought and prop them up at the end of the bed for him to look at. I said, 'Fred, why are you doing this?' And he said, 'What else have I got to do? I can't go out, I can't leave the bed, but at least I can go shopping.' He had this wonderful, indomitable spirit."

40 Years Ago Today: Bryan Adams Releases 'Cuts Like A Knife' Album

It was 40 years ago today (January 18th, 1983) that British-born, Canadian rocker Bryan Adams released his breakthrough third album, Cuts Like A Knife. The album was co-produced by Adams and the soon-to-be legendary Bob Clearmountain.

The platinum-selling Cuts Like A Knife album peaked at Number Eight on the Billboard 200 and spurred three major Top 40 hits, starting with the power ballad "Straight From The Heart" which hit Number 10; the album's title track, a massive MTV video hit that peaked at Number 15 on the Hot 100 and Number Six on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks list; and "This Time," which topped out at Number 24.

One of the highlights of every Bryan Adams show is "Straight From The Heart" -- a tune he had written half-a-decade before its release on the Cuts Like A Knife album: "I think about a song like 'Straight From The Heart," which I wrote in 1978 and didn't record it on my own until Cuts Like A Knife in 1983. In that five years of gestation, it was recorded by a few different artists -- Bonnie Tyler and all kinds of people recorded it. And then I took it to the studio; I'd rehearsed it, I'd played it, and I took all that stuff that I'd heard other people had done with it and thought 'Nah, that's not workin'' -- so, I was able to (laughs) learn from those recordings of what I didn't wanna do to make the record that I did wanna do."

The "Cuts Like A Knife" video may have impressed the girls with Bryan Adams' cute, tough-guy image -- but for the budding male rockers watching it was all about Adams' Rickenbacker 360 12-string electric guitar: "I bought that guitar in 1981. That's a really good question -- I bought it at a shop. It was 12-string. I bought that guitar here in New York City at Sam Ash Music."

The Eagles' Glenn Frey Remembered

It was seven years ago today (January 18th, 2016) that Eagles' co-founder, guitarist, and songwriter Glenn Frey died in New York City due to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia. He was 67-years-old. Against all odds, after a period of mourning, the surviving Eagles -- Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit -- decided to forge ahead and hit the road with Frey's then-23-year-old son Deacon Frey and country star Vince Gill stepping in to cover Frey's classic songs. Deacon has since left the band as a full time touring member, but still occasionally pops up onstage with the band.

In 2019, on behalf of the Frey estate, Glenn Frey's widow, Cindy Frey, filed suit against both Mount Sinai Hospital and gastroenterologist Dr. Steven Itzkowitz. Cindy Frey is suing for $12 million in lost earnings to her family due to Glenn's death. She claims that in 2015 -- the year before Frey's death -- Itzkowitz was negligent in treating the Glenn's ulcerative colitis.

PageSix.com reported Cindy Frey's suit puts forth that "the doctor failed to 'promptly and properly assess the patient for respiratory issues and ignored an infection.' As a result of his death, his family was deprived of his care, guidance and support, and they have suffered pecuniary damage." The report states that Itzkowitz believes that Frey could not have earned another $12 million had he lived passed 67.

The first sign that Glenn Frey was in ill health came in November 2015 when it was announced that his upcoming intestinal surgery would push back the Eagles' 2015 Kennedy Center Honors until the following year, due to his suffering a recurrence of "previous intestinal issues, which will require major surgery and a lengthy recovery period." In 1990, Frey underwent surgery to remove a large part of his large intestines. His intestinal troubles have blocked several other Eagles events over the years; back in 1986 stomach issues prevented Frey from reuniting with Don Henley at a rare post-split benefit appearance in California, and the group's 1995 Hell Freezes Over reunion tour was thrown off track while Frey dealt with diverticulitis.

Following Glenn Frey's death, songwriting partner and Eagles co-founder Don Henley spoke lovingly of his late friend in a prepared statement:

He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved. We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry -- and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, Irving Azoff, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed. But, Glenn was the one who started it all. He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn't quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved his wife and kids more than anything. We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. We brought our two-year History Of The Eagles Tour to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone. I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some.

We spoke to one of Frey's oldest friends, the great Bob Seger, who described him to us as being like his "little brother." Seger, who co-wrote the Eagles' last Number One hit, "Heartache Tonight," spoke lovingly about his buddy from back home in Detroit: "I knew him 50 years, he was brilliant. He was a classically trained pianist; the chords you hear on 'The Last Resort' and on 'Desperado' -- that's him playing the piano. He wrote those chords. Henley probably wrote the bulk of the lyrics, but that's Glenn. He was a brilliant pianist, classically trained since he was a very young kid. He was (laughs) a joy to be around. I looked forward to seein' him -- I didn't see him all that much over the last 50 years, 'cause he was busy, I was busy, but when I did, it was memorable (laughs), 'cause he had an amazing sense of humor, and just whip smart. Whip smart. And I don't know how you quantify songwriting, but if you do it on the dollars and cents scale -- he's one of the most successful songwriters that ever lived."

Seger, who dedicated his 2017 album, I Knew You When, to Frey, came up with the Eagles leader back home in Detroit and told us that Glenn Frey and music were pretty much, one and the same: "They had a nickname for him in the Eagles, they called him 'The Lone Arranger.' People would bring in a song and Glenn would arrange it. That was his nickname -- 'The Lone Arranger.' And of course, he loved soul music. He loved Marvin Gaye, he loved Al Green, he loved Otis Redding -- he named his last kid after Otis Redding. Otis is his youngest kid, y'know, 16-years-old."

Seger told us that it'll be rough without Glenn Frey: "Y'know, I'm gonna miss him like crazy. We would always get together whenever he came to Detroit. He was. . . He was a good kid. He was a really good kid. I never thought I'd outlive him. I really feel bad for doin' that, 'cause he should've lived longer."

Singer-songwriter J.D. Souther, who scored major solo hits with 1979's "You're Only Lonely" and his 1981 duet with James Taylor on "Her Town Too," is best known for co-writing such Eagles classics as "The Best Of My Love," "Heartache Tonight," "Victim Of Love," "New Kid In Town," and "The Sad Cafe," as well as Don Henley's "The Heart Of The Matter." We asked Souther if while composing with Henley and Frey he ever felt a friendly competition within the trio: "With those guys, yeah, 'cause we were all critical beyond belief. I mean (laughs) y'know. . . I mean we're funny guys, and we were friends so it was a blast to do, but we were very critical while we were writing it. Probably the nicest complement that you would ever hear between the three of us, if someone came up with an idea and deposited a line, the best you would probably hear from the other two guys was, 'Yeah, I think we could say that.' And that was a compliment."

Eagles songwriter and Glenn Frey's solo collaborator, Jack Tempchin, shed light on how the pair came up with Frey's 1985 hit, "Smuggler's Blues": "Glenn came down to visit me in San Diego. He had just purchased the rights to the book Snowblind, and they -- he and (manager) Irving Azoff -- were thinking maybe they were going to make a movie. And the deal was, 'Well, let's write a song, Jack, for this movie.' He already knew he wanted slide guitar and be a cool, bluesy thing called 'Smuggler's Blues' and have it be from the point of view of the guy that sells the drugs, y'know, and flies around. So, we both had a lot of strong political feelings about the so-called 'war on drugs,' y'know? But he already had the concept that this'll be, like, slide guitar and kinda cool. So we just started cutting it in my little studio there."

We asked Glenn Frey if he's ever truly sat down and contemplated the Eagles' importance in popular culture: "Oh listen, we are just a blip on the screen, babe. Y'know, we don't even think about those kind of things, although we've been, we've been around a while now, so we will rank as a band that was around for a while. But it's not for us to say."

HISTORY

Glenn Frey, who co-founded the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner, will be remembered as one of the most important and consistent hitmakers of the 1970's for the songs he wrote with Henley, and often in conjunction with his pre-fame duo partner, J.D. Souther. Frey co-wrote such era defining tunes as "Tequila Sunrise," "Desperado," "Best Of My Love," "Lyin' Eyes," "Take It To The Limit," "One Of These Nights," "Hotel California," "New Kid In Town," "Life In The Fast Lane," "Victim Of Love," "Heartache Tonight," "I Can't Tell You Why," and "The Long Run" -- along with the band's signature hit, "Take It Easy," which he wrote with Jackson Browne. Like the Beatles, the Eagles shined by featuring two distinct lead voices, with Henley and Frey divvying up their catalogue to suit each other's vocals.

Born on November 6th, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan, Frey had been playing in bands in and around the Motor City for years -- and nearly permanently joined forces in the late-'60s with Bob Seger. He made his way out to L.A. not for a shot at stardom, but as a last-ditch effort to reunite with his ex-girlfriend who had moved west to become a singer. He soon teamed up with J.D. Souther to form the short-lived duo, Longbranch/Pennywhistle, who released one album in 1969 on the Amos label. Frey soon met his musical fate while he and the rest of the soon-to-be Eagles backed Linda Ronstadt for a 1971 summer tour. The Eagles originally split in 1980 and reformed in 1994 and have toured the world regularly ever since.

The Eagles' last collection, 2007's Long Road Out Of Eden, was the band's sixth chart-topper and was the highest selling album of the year. To date, it has sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone.

With the Eagles, Frey earned six Grammy Awards, and with the band and on his own, landed 24 singles in the Top 40 -- including the chart-toppers "Best Of My Love," "One Of These Nights," "New Kid In Town," "Hotel California," and "Heartache Tonight."

The Eagles, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, have sold over 120 million albums globally. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified the band's 1976 compilation, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, 38-times Platinum, accounting for sales and streams of more than 38 million copies since its release in February of 1976. The Eagles' followup to the classic compilation, the watershed Hotel California album, released in December 1976, is now the third best-selling album of all time, certified 26-times Platinum by the RIAA for sales and streams of more than 26 million copies.

Don Henley and Glenn Frey were induced into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000.

Following the Eagles' 1980 split, Frey's solo career initially boomed, teaming up with Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin for a string of Top 40 hits -- including the 1985 Top Two hit, "You Belong To The City" which was featured on the soundtrack to Miami Vice, "Smuggler's Blues" -- which inspired an episode of the NBC cop drama -- and kicked off an acting career for Frey, who was featured in a notable cameo in Cameron Crowe's 1996 film Jerry McGuire. Frey also scored a Top Two hit in '85 with a tune he didn't write -- "The Heat Is On" -- as featured in the classic Eddie Murphy comedy, Beverly Hills Cop.

In 2012, Frey released his first solo album in nearly 20 years, the standards collection, After Hours. The set, which was long awaited followup to Frey's last album, 1992's Strange Weather, featured a string of American classics -- but stretched the "American Songbook" genre to include songs through the 1960's, including Burt Bacharach & Hal David's "The Look Of Love" and Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds closer, "Caroline, No."

In 2013 the Eagles released History Of The Eagles Part 1 & 2, the band's three-hour documentary. The three-disc set includes the bonus disc, Eagles Live At The Capital Centre - March 1977, featuring never-before-released performances from the band's two-night stand at Landover, Maryland's Capital Center during the legendary Hotel California tour.

In 2014 Glenn Frey inducted Linda Ronstadt into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Eagles -- with special guest Bernie Leadon -- toured the world throughout 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Frey was posthumously awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in December 2016.

2018 saw the release of the definitive Glenn Frey solo retrospective, the four-disc set, Above The Clouds: The Collection. Highlights on the set include such solo hits as "The Heat Is On," "The One You Love," "Part Of Me, Part Of You," "You Belong To The City," and "Smuggler's Blues," among others. In addition, the set includes a live DVD featuring Frey performing some of his most beloved Eagles classics taped live on September 15th, 1992 in Dublin, Ireland.

Above The Clouds is most notable for the first CD reissue of the 1969 self-titled Longbranch/Pennywhistle album featuring Frey and frequent Eagles collaborator, J.D. Souther.

Bono & The Edge Team Up With David Letterman For New Disney+ Special

The teaser has been released for the new Disney+ special, Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman. Rolling Stone reported the show will premiere on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th -- the same day U2's new album of songs reimagined from their catalogue, named Songs Of Surrender is also released. The doc, which spotlights the U2 leaders heading back home to Dublin, Ireland marks the legendary TV host's first trip to the country.

The special was directed by Morgan Neville, best known for his documentaries 20 Feet From Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.

Letterman joked in the doc's official statement, writing, “Recently, I won a radio contest. Winner gets to visit Dublin with Bono and The Edge (radio contest part not true, but I feel like a winner). They showed me around, introduced me to their musician friends, and performed some of their greatest songs in a small theater. It’s a great tour. Get in touch with them -- I’m told there are still availabilities. I’m the luckiest man on the planet. (There are no availabilities)."

The Edge explained that ultimately with U2, the more things change, the more they stay the same: ["That's the thing about a band, you get together at age 17, 18 -- you all decide you wanna do the same thing, which is make music together, and then the years go by but you kinda still kind of maintain that same dynamic and it's, it's remarkable not so much what's changed over the years, but how little has changed over the years. Y'know, when we get into the studio, it still feels like we're making our first album. It's that same sort of intensity and combines with ambition and a little bit of desperation, as well. And you really just wanna give it your best, and nothing really much has changed over the years."] SOUNDCUE (:30 OC: . . . over the years)

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Rehearsing In Red Bank

Fan reports are leaking from die-cards waiting outside of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's New Jersey rehearsals. The Twitter page Bruce Springsteen's Tour News has been keeping vigil outside of rehearsals and listing all that's been going down inside. The band is currently rehearsing for their 2023 comeback tour in Red Bank at The Vogel, with Monday's (January 16th) rehearsals only featuring "The Boss," keyboardists Roy Bittan and Charlie Giordano -- along with the tour's backing vocalists.

In addition to the slew of band standards performed by the E Streeter's over the past few days, several songs from Springsteen's recent soul covers set, Only The Strong Survive, have been tackled, including "Nightshift," "Don't Play That Song," and "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)."

The band was also heard rehearsing live versions of songs from Springsteen's 2020 Letter To You album - including the album's title track, "House Of A Thousand Guitars," "Ghosts," and "If I Was Priest."

Among the guests who've popped into rehearsals have been Springsteen's younger sister, photographer Pam, his son --  New Jersey firefighter -- Sam Springsteen and his wife, photographer Danny Clinch, and close friend John Salerno.

Over the years, we've been lucky enough to talk to Springsteen about his work and how the E Street Band has figured into his music. He explained to us that following a decade long hiatus, the band reconvening in 1999 meant a tremendous amount to him and each and every member of the band: ["It was a great time for all of us. We're probably one of the few bands where everybody's alive. Y'know, and everybody's healthy, and all the relationships are intact. And I think that we've gotten to a place where everybody realizes, 'Wow, this is a very singular thing.' Y'know, it's a unique thing; this group of people playing together in this fashion. And that we created something together that was a big, big part of our own lives, y'know? And a big part of our audience's life and we wanted to live up to that thing. And we wanted to continue to serve in the fashion that we served before with our audience, y'know? And those were really -- and those were the critical issues when we got together, y'know, to come out on the road. And I think they were things that you really weren't going top know the answers to till you got out and played."] SOUNDCUE (:53 OC: . . . out and played)

Cardi B Reveals How Offset Found Out About Takeoff's Death

Cardi B has opened up about how she and Offset found out about Takeoff's death back in November. During an interview on The Jason Lee Show, she said, "We was in bed.  We was supposed to go to La La's party in New York and my daughter threw up all over my costume...We just fell asleep and out of nowhere, Offset phone kept ringing, my phone kept ringing. Offset picked up the phone and he's just like 'No!' He screaming and screaming. And I'm like, 'What's going on?' He's like, 'Takeoff is dead.'"

She continued, "I smacked him, I was like, 'Don't say that.' He's just like screaming. Throwing things. Throwing up. Running all over. I was just so scared. I was just crying so much. It was terrible."

CARDI B OPENED UP ABOUT HOW OFFSET FOUGHT FOR THEIR FAMILY AFTER SHE FILED FOR DIVORCE

Cardi also opened up about what made her call off the divorce with Offset after filing in 2020. She said, “Me and Offset, we was not seeing eye-to-eye.  This was like, the same year I filed for divorce and everything. I’m gonna let him talk about this because the main thing that was really bothering me, I’ma let him say it. I want him to say it, because I feel like that’s really part of his story."

She continued, “The main thing that I wanted him to stop and everything, he stopped and he changed, and it showed me that he wanted to change for me."

Dave Grohl Comic Book Out Now

Just released is the Orbit: Dave Grohl comic book by TidalWave Comics. The 22-page comic was written by Adam Rose and illustrated by Martin Gimenez, and is part of TidalWave's "Orbit" series, which "focuses on personalities who impact the world."

American Songwriter reported the comic, which spans Grohl's entire life, "Takes readers inside Grohl’s childhood growing up in Virginia. One series details how playing drums was a form of healing in the wake of his parents’ divorce, along with the early days of his first band, punk rockers Scream. There’s also a page devoted to Kurt Cobain, frontman of Nirvana, who died in 1994."

At one point, the animated Grohl character is quoted in the in the comic as saying, "Kurt’s death messed with me. Had me asking: who am I, where am I, what am I doing? He wasn’t with us anymore and that I had another day. I had to start from scratch with everything."

Dave Grohl told us a while back that he and Kurt Cobain could always bond over hard rock: ["Kurt had the same love of (death metal band) Celtic Frost and (hardcore act) Black Flag, and I've listened to this music for 20-something years and my passion for it has never died, and the thing that kind of bugs me about that Nirvana metal thing is that, y'know, we never set out to do anything really. We just wanted to play music, and we kind of became the poster boys for that whole turnover."] SOUNDCUE (:23 OC: . . . that whole turnover)

Alice Cooper Rolls Out 'Too Close For Comfort' Tour Dates

Alice Cooper has just rolled out the dates for his "Too Close For Comfort" tour. The shows, which will primarily hit the South and Midwest in April and May, pre-date his summer stadium run opening for Def Leppard and Motley Crue.

Blabbermouth reported, "Pre-sale tickets and VIP packages will be available next Tuesday, January 17th (use code "SICKTHINGS"). Tickets go on sale to the general public next Friday, January 20th at 10 a.m. local time."

Alice Cooper told us that he honestly never sees a day coming when he'll retire -- or even offer up a scaled back version of his concerts: ["I love the stage show, and I'm always gonna do the stage show. There's never a time when I'm gonna back off from the stage show. I think I can do what I do with good conscience and still do my stage show and stay within my own boundaries, and everybody's gonna walk away going, 'That was the best show I've ever seen.' And still compete with Marilyn Manson, and still compete with Slipknot, and Mudvayne, and all these bands. I just don't go for the cheap shot -- I wanna go for the clever shot."] SOUNDCUE (:22 OC: . . . the clever shot)

Happy Birthday, Rolling Stones Guitarist Mick Taylor!!!

Happy Birthday to former-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, who turns 74 today (January 17th)!!! In June of 1969, Taylor replaced the band's co-founder Brian Jones shortly before his death, and less than a month later, on July 3rd, 1969, he made his live debut with the Stones at a free live concert at London's Hyde Park. Taylor, who had previously played with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, toured extensively with the band until late-1973, and played on the Stones albums Let It Bleed, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Goat's Head Soup, and It's Only Rock And Roll.

The Stones delighted fans in 2012 by inviting Mick Taylor to join them at all of their official 50th anniversary shows in London and the U.S. to play a show-stealing rendition of 1969's "Midnight Rambler." Taylor remained the featured attraction on the band's subsequent dates through 2014 and often appeared on as many as three numbers each night -- including the show-closing version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

Taylor, who's currently working on his autobiography, recalled that back in the day, like any working band, the Stones were extremely tight -- both on and off the road: ["That whole period was incredibly intense and creative for all of us because it was a new beginning for the band -- and they had signed a new contract with Atlantic Records and we had to, in theory, at least, we had to come up with at least six albums in six years. If we weren't hanging out together or recording, we were touring. I just remember most of the time we were either in the studio, or we were socializing together, or we were on the road."] SOUNDCUE (:29 OC: . . . on the road)

In 1975 Mick Taylor appeared on England's The Old Grey Whistle Test and shed light on his exit from the Stones' camp: ["It had been in the back of my mind for quite a long time. I mean, my role as lead guitarist has always been very satisfying, especially playing live onstage, which is where I feel I make my greatest contribution toward the group. But as my own music started to develop, it became more and more difficult to express myself within the style of the group. And, I mean, it's the style of the Stones that makes them so good.”] SOUNDCUE (:29 OC: . . .  them so good.)

Shortly after beginning his most recent stint in the Rolling Stones, we asked Mick Taylor if he had any apprehensions regarding rejoining the band prior its 50 & Counting Tour: ["Well, I had my doubts before I did the O2 show in London, but I think after I did two shows in London with them -- and a rehearsal -- I was very confident that if they wanted things to continue, they would."] SOUNDCUE (:12 OC: . . . continue they would)

Former Stones bassist Bill Wyman admits that he's still in awe of Mick Taylor's considerable talent: ["Musically, he was a better musician than any of us in the band. Definitely. He was young, he was -- God! Some of the things he did were, I don't know -- amazing. He was incredibly boring on the stage. He'd just stand there and look at his guitar, and do these amazing licks and riffs and solos. God, the audience (would only) see the top of his head all the time. I always thought, y'know, (laughs) he could've been -- but then (laughs) I'm not a good one to talk am I? I don't leap about much. In 30 years with the Stones I probably made three steps on the (laughs) stage."] SOUNDCUE (:36 OC: . . . on the (laughs) stage)

Taylor was responsible for some of the Stones' most famous solos during their early '70s heyday, and was highlighted on Sticky Fingers' seven-plus-minute, Latin-infused workout "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." He has gone on record over the years claiming that he actually co-wrote many Stones songs for which he's never been credited or compensated, including "Moonlight Mile," "Sway," "Winter," "Till The Next Time We Say Goodbye," and "Time Waits For No One," among others.

After leaving the Stones in December 1974 and eventually being replaced by Ron Wood, Taylor briefly teamed up with Jack Bruce, with less than successful results.

Although Taylor continues to tour and record, he's found his greatest success as a sideman, performing on Bob Dylan's Infidels and Empire Burlesque albums, as well as touring with Dylan in 1984

On December 15th, 1981, at the band's Tattoo You tour, Taylor appeared on stage at Kansas City's Kemper Arena and performed nearly the entire show with the band.

The band's Tattoo You album featured "Tops" and "Waiting On A Friend," two Goat's Head Soup outtakes recorded in 1972 in Jamaica, which featured Taylor on guitar.

Taylor remains on good terms with the Rolling Stones, and has frequently sat in with Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and Bill Wyman over the years.

Mick Taylor was on hand in 1989 when the Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2010 he teamed up with Jagger and Richards to add overdubs to the unreleased material on the Exile On Main Street reissue.
