Last Original Cricket, Drummer J.I. Allison Dead At 82

Drummer Jerry "J.I." Allison, the last surviving original member of Buddy Holly's band the Crickets, died on August 22nd at 88. In addition to his drumming duties for the Crickets, he co-wrote their two biggest hits with Holly -- "That'll Be The day" and "Peggy Sue" -- which was named after Allison's eventual first wife.

Allison and Holly formed the group in their hometown of Lubbock, Texas and were part of a much larger support team that encircled the band's songwriting and studio work. Holly, Allison, late-bassist Joe B. Mauldin, and early guitarist Nikki Sullivan, eventually recorded under both the band moniker and "Buddy Holly" for two different labels. The Crickets parted ways with Holly in 1958, but according to numerous sources were to reunite once Holly got back off the road in 1959.

According to several sources, including then-Buddy Holly touring bassist Waylon Jennings, Holly's post-tour plans were to reconvene with the Crickets and carry on with then-current guitarist Tommy Allsup on lead guitar. Holly was also planning on starting his own record label -- Prism Records -- and signing Jennings as its first artist.

J.I. Allison recalled the deal that he and Buddy Holly made prior to him moving to New York City in 1958: "The last time I saw Buddy as a matter of fact he said, 'O.K., if you're not gonna move to New York, y'all just work as 'The Crickets' and I'll work as 'Buddy Holly' and if it doesn't work out for either one of us we'll get back together, okay?' And we said 'Fine.' And Waylon told me that Buddy was talking to him on that last tour and said 'I'm going to get J.I. and Joe B. back.'"

Following Buddy Holly's 1959 death, J.I. Allison secured the Crickets band name and continued to record in the early-'60s, along with backing the Everly Brothers. Along with Buddy Holly collaborator -- and latter-day Cricket -- Sonny Curtis, Allison co-wrote "More Than I Can Say" for Bobby Vee in 1962 with Leo Sayer's 1980 cover version topping out at Number Two. Allison and other assorted Crickets and Holly sidemen went on to play on many of the hits that came out of L.A. on the Liberty Records label. In the 1980's, he and Joe B. Mauldin revived the Crickets both on stage and in the studio.

In 2012 the Crickets were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by none other than Smokey Robinson.

Over the years, the Beatles often stated how influential and important Buddy Holly & The Crickets' music was to them -- even naming themselves "The Beatles" as a homage to the group. J.I. Allison revealed to us that the Crickets were Beatles supporters before they even had a hit: "Sonny (Curtis) heard 'Love Me Do' and he mentioned it to a TV show in England (in) I think 1962. He sure liked that group the Beatles and 'Love Me Do.' And the Beatles played there a week or so later, and they (the station staff) mentioned that Sonny Curtis of the Crickets had said they liked 'Love Me Do.' And so, they sat down and wrote a letter -- 'Dear Crickets, we heard you like our record.' I mean, I still got that letter framed, needless to say."

R.E.M. Releases 40th Anniversary Edition Of 'Chronic Town'

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, R.E.M. has reissued their debut 1982 EP, Chronic Town. The set is now available for the first time ever as a standalone CD -- as well as an exclusive LP picture disc, and cassette. The new package features extensive liner notes by producer Mitch Easter.

Chronic Town released on August 24, 1982 via I.R.S. Records, with the five-song set including such instant classics as "Gardening At Night," "Wolves, Lower," and "1,000,000." The EP, which followed the band's debut single, July 1981's "Radio Free Europe," was recorded in October 1981 at Winston-Salem, North Carolina's Drive-In Studio and sold 20,000 copies in its first year of release.

Chronic Town finally saw wide release when it was included on the CD edition of R.E.M.'s 1987 fan favorite rarities compilation, Dead Letter Office.

Frontman Michael Stipe looked back on his and the band's career and how college radio played a big part in their success: "When we were coming along, college radio was becoming kind of a very important force in American music, and people that were not interested in Top 40 or super-popular stuff, they had somewhere to go where you could hear new things and you could hear things that might be extremely local and not necessarily in your region of the country, but were exciting. And what that created was kind of a network of bands like ourselves and Sonic Youth and Black Flag who had for the first time a very fledgling core audience that when you went and performed in a club they would come and see you, they knew who you were, they knew the one or two singles that you had."

Flashback: The Beatles Rock The Hollywood Bowl

It was 58 years ago tonight (August 23rd, 1964) that the Beatles' made their legendary debut at L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl. Following the concert's opening acts, the Bill Black Combo, the Exciters, the Righteous Brothers, and Jackie DeShannon, the Beatles hit the stage at approximately 9:30 p.m. and performed their 12-song set in about 30 minutes in front of 18,300 people.

According to historian Chuck Gunderson, author of the groundbreaking book, Some Fun Tonight, which chronicles the "Fab Four's" 1964, 1965, and 1966 North American tours, the Hollywood Bowl show -- which was the group's fifth in a 25-city month-long road trek of one-nighters, grossed the band a whopping $25,000 -- a full $15,000 more than Frank Sinatra commanded -- and the equivalent of nearly $207,000 in today's money.

The Beatles' setlist at The Hollywood Bowl on August 23rd, 1964 was: "Twist And Shout," "You Can't Do That," "All My Loving," "She Loves You," "Things We Said Today," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Can't Buy Me Love," "If I Fell," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Boys," "A Hard Day's Night," and "Long Tall Sally."

In 1977, The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl was released. The album, which featured songs from all three of the group's shows at the venue -- August 23rd, 1964 and August 29th and 30th, 1965 -- was remixed and produced by George Martin for release. The album, which was the Beatles' only official live album, and their first previously unreleased archival collection, went on to peak at Number Two on the Billboard 200 album charts. In 2016, the revamped The Beatles: Live At The Hollywood Bowl was issued as a companion to Ron Howard's documentary The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years.

Renowned Beatles author Bruce Spizer has published nine books on the Beatles and has consulted on the remastering of their Capitol Albums box sets. Spizer says that he's definitely hoping for a complete unedited version of The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl to be released in the near future: "I personally would have no problem with the unedited Hollywood Bowl '64 and '65 concerts coming out on CD. Because I think the excitement is so great and the fact that they miss a few notes doesn't bother me a bit, and really doesn't to me show a reflection of, 'Gee, John and Paul missed a note on that song.'"

Paul McCartney admitted that even before they had cemented their place in popular culture and musical history -- the Beatles always knew they were good: "We were very sure of ourselves. I wouldn't call it conceited -- but we just knew we were good. And we knew we were gonna do very well, we didn't know how it was gonna happen. People would say to me at the time, 'Do you think your stuff is gonna be standards, y'know, like Sinatra's stuff? And I would go 'yeah.' It's true. You just felt it."

Bazzi Releases New Single And Announces Tour Dates

Bazzi has released a new single called "Heaven."

A lot of thought went into this particular song. Through a press release, he said it was difficult picking one single to represent the whole album.

He said, "Heaven" is something I thought fans would enjoy and it would be a nice precursor to all the madness and insanity that they're going to get to hear on the album."

The new single is from Bazzi's third solo album, Infinite Dream which comes out September 16.

He'll hit the road this fall to promote the album. The first date is set for October17th in Dallas, Texas.

Director Blames The Beatles & Disney For Not Expanding 'Get Back' Film

Director Peter Jackson blames both the Beatles' company Apple and Disney for not moving ahead with an extended version of the critically lauded The Beatles: Get Back film. The new DVD and Blu-ray version of the film features no additional footage -- despite the fact that Jackson has publicly stated he is prepared to deliver a deluxe 16-hour edit of the film.

The Playlist.net reported Jackson spoke about the future of the Get Back project with Kim Masters from The Hollywood Reporter on The Business podcast. When Masters stated that she knew Jackson was currently prepping a longer version of Get Back for release, he said, "I'm not, no. I'm fighting to, Kim, help me. Disney and Apple are reluctant because they say -- and they might be quite right -- that there's no market anymore for extended cuts. But I know that there's five or six hours of fantastic material that we didn't include, and I don't want it to go back into the faults for 50 years. So, let's just say that it's a conversation that's happening, but it's not necessarily a definitive one at this point."

Due to production delays and problems, the Get Back home release was stalled, which pulled much of the attention away from the physical release. Sadly, the lack of promotion and bonus content seems to have turned the runaway success of the TV broadcast into yesterday's news.

Roger Friedman of Showbiz411.com recently posted: "Get Back was finally released three weeks ago in both formats. No one knows about it, and it's been a dud. The DVD version has sold just 12,716 copies. The Blu Ray has sold 31,661. This is very disappointing. Total sales so far have come to just $1.6 million." (Showbiz411)

Michael Lindsey-Hogg, the director of the Beatles' Let It Be film and all the outtakes mined for the Get Back miniseries, is amazed with what the new footage looks and sounds like: "First of all -- technically, it's fabulous. So, the images look like they were shot yesterday, but also Peter's got wonderful sound equipment over there. One of the problems when we shot it 50 years ago was that musicians have this annoying habit of when they're talking to you -- if they're not rehearsing a song -- of, sort of, noodling on a guitar. Someone might be saying something really interesting, but then there would be a (imitates guitar squawk) on the guitar. What Peter's done is, he's got equipment over there which has been able to separate tracks."

Lindsey Buckingham Tags Seven New Cities Onto Fall Tour

Lindsey Buckingham has just tagged seven new cities onto his growing fall tour. The ousted-Fleetwood Mac guitarist will now also be hitting Bristol and Nashville, Tennessee; Nashville, Indiana; York, Pennsylvania; Annapolis, Maryland; Durham, North Carolina; and Augusta, Georgia.

One of the highlights of the current shows is Buckingham's solo acoustic rendition of the band's 1987 hit "Big Love." He said that introducing that arrangement into the Fleetwood Mac shows back in 1997 helped change the face of his current music: "I started to become more and more intrigued about the work you could do from a single guitar. Y'know, over the last maybe 10 years or so, that's something that I've just kind of been looking at and trying to refine. And part of that probably is a reaction to having had to adapt out some of the style that I have naturally."

Cardi's is go do drugs, f*ck random men, and go through life as a brain dead moron."

Cardi responded, "I'm married, I don't smoke weed, I don't pop pills, I don't do coke, I'm a mom of 2 kids and I do a lot of charity work.. but hey let me put cardi into it to defend a man who defend misogyny and rape"

Robert Plant Still Not Open For Led Zeppelin Reunion

Robert Plant is still not open for a Led Zeppelin reunion. Although currently on tour with Alison Krauss and enjoying the success of their recent hit collaboration, Raise The Roof, Zeppelin fans still clamor for just one more reunion. Plant spoke to The Los Angeles Times and was asked about a return to Zeppelin, to which he explained, "Going back to the font to get some kind of massive applause -- it doesn't really satisfy my need to be stimulated."

Despite the December 2007 one-off Zeppelin reunion in London featuring himself, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham filling in for his late dad John Bonham, Plant has been the lone hold-out in committing to a full-on reunion. Several of the industries' top promoters have essentially offered the band a blank check should they commit to any number of road dates.

He went on to say "I know there are people from my generation who don't want to stay home and so they go out and play. If they're enjoying it and doing what they need to do to pass the days, then that's their business, really."

Regarding his legendary vocal prowess and how it's aged, Plant revealed, "I know that the full, open-throated falsetto that I was able to concoct in 1968 carried me through until I was tired of it. Then that sort of exaggerated personality of vocal performance morphed and went somewhere else. But as a matter of fact, I was playing in Reykjavík, in Iceland, about three years ago, just before Covid. It was Midsummer Night and there was a festival, and I got my band and I said, 'OK, let's do 'Immigrant Song.'' They'd never done it before. We just hit it, and bang -- there it was. I thought, 'Oh, I didn't think I could still do that.'"

Robert Plant admitted that no matter what he does, there will always be a cross-section of fans that rate it against his work with Led Zeppelin: "The Led Zeppelin myth has been extended now by the mission and the cult. And so, everybody goes, 'Oh, but Zeppelin was much better than that.' Maybe it'll happen to me, too, but I've kind of taken the essence of Zeppelin, and I am the singer of Led Zeppelin. And I've taken the essence of the changes of Led Zeppelin and brought it up to date. So, I could never, ever hope to top it. I could never expect to be taken as. . . taken to the hearts of people quite like Led Zeppelin was, because I'm only a part of it."

There was no mention of test results for Barker's wife, Kourtney Kardashian.

  • Travis Barker has tested positive for Covid.

45 Years Ago Today: Beach Boy Dennis Wilson Releases 'Pacific Ocean Blue'

It was 45 years ago today (August 22nd, 1977) that Beach Boys co-founder Dennis Wilson released his solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue. The set, which was the first solo collection to be released by one of the group's original members, peaked at Number 96 on the Billboard 200 albums chart during its 12-week-run. The album has gone on to become a cult classic and influenced a whole new generation of record makers, and tapped into many of the same emotions as his older brother Brian Wilson did with 1966's Pet Sounds -- albeit in a completely different genre, voice, and musical palette.

Back in June 2008 the deluxe reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue and its unreleased 1978 follow-up, Bambu -- which was issued to unanimous critical acclaim -- earned the nod for "Best Reissue" from Rolling Stone, Mojo, and Uncut magazines.

In 2016, "You And I" from Pacific Ocean Blue was featured in an episode of Sarah Jessica Parker's HBO drama Divorce. Most recently, on Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp's first joint album, titled, 18, which was released last month, the pair covered the Pacific Ocean Blue ballad "Time."

Dennis Wilson's best friend, photographer, and filmmaker Ed Roach, actually inspired the classic line in the album's only domestic single, "You And I" -- "you open up my wallet and dust falls out" -- and told us that he pleaded with Dennis not to scrap his planned solo tour in support of Pacific Ocean Blue: "He was very nervous about going out as 'headliner,' as 'the act,' y'know? I mean, the lack of confidence in himself really came out. He could mesmerize an audience, but as far as being the one to draw them in and being the main act to come out -- it scared him a little bit, I think. And I really think he was very leery of ever actually doing it. And it was such a shame because that first tour was (going to be) so beautiful. The places he was going to play and the sizes and the houses and everything, and the show that he had conceptualized and that he put together."

West Coast music historian Jon Stebbins, who wrote the groundbreaking 2000 biography on Dennis Wilson called The Real Beach Boy, explained one of the many reasons why Dennis abandoned his 1977 symphonic tour in support of Pacific Ocean Blue: "I think he wanted 23 pieces -- at least 18, he wanted. It was going to be all of his boys. I think he was going to play some piano and come up front and sing some. It was going to be a whole deal, y'know? They were rehearsing 'What's Wrong,' 'Rainbows,' 'Pacific Ocean Blue,' 'The End Of The Show' -- they were probably going to do that as the last song, and he'd do 'You Are So Beautiful' for the encore, I'm sure. But he wanted strings, he wanted bass flutes, y'know? (Laughs) He wanted all that stuff and they wouldn't give him the budget for it."

Dennis primary collaborator and producer for Pacific Ocean Blue, Gregg Jakobson, recalled to us that at times he was forced to take on an almost paternal role with Dennis: "Yeah, I really did try to take care of Dennis, and I always tried to play that role. Y'know, Dennis needed someone to look after him -- not quite clean up after him -- but to try to just stay ahead of him, and not stay behind him; where a lot of his friends stayed -- I tried to stay in front of him."

Lindsey Buckingham became friendly with Dennis Wilson when Wilson began dating Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Wilson was a frequent visitor to the band's recording sessions for 1979's Tusk, which coincided with Wilson abandoning his own album Bambu. Buckingham recalled to us his thoughts on Dennis: "He was kind of a lost guy. He was a very talented guy -- way more talented than he had the structure to be able to exhibit. Y'know, he had a lot going on without the tools to sort of get there -- that's my opinion anyway. He was a real sweetheart. He was also a rogue. Y'know, he was that rogue element."

In 2015, Dennis Wilson's eldest child, Scott Wilson published his memoir, Son Of A Beach Boy. Scott was adopted by Dennis as a toddler when he married his mother Carole, and although not a blood relation, Scott was the only one of Dennis' brood to have spent a considerable amount of time with him over the years. Today, Scott, who's battled many of the same demons as his father, is able to look back at his father's life and understand why Dennis fell into every possible pitfall laid in his path: "We all know that my dad was a drug addict. And I was with him off and on. And my dad gave so much love to so many people, because he was trying to fill a void. So, when he was able to make somebody laugh, or make somebody happy, that filled a hole inside of him -- but it didn't fill it forever; it was a momentary thing, bro."

Beach Boy Al Jardine told us he's still amazed at the depth and beauty of Dennis' songs: "Oh, he was the most underrated member of the band in those terms. His compositions, I think, were stronger, and they got stronger and stronger as we went along -- as he went along -- until obviously he couldn't go any further. And I just think that given time, y'know, he would've been the. . . probably the best composer in the band, outside of Brian, of course. Yeah, he just had that natural, intuitive instinct about music and lyrics. He always. . . he was the kind of guy who could get to the point without beating around the bush and, y'know, could just nail it."

On December 28th, 1983 Dennis Wilson drowned in Marina Del Rey, California just weeks after his 39th birthday.

In 2017, noted rock writer Ken Sharp published Dreamer - The Making Of Dennis Wilson's 'Pacific Ocean Blue.' Through Sharp's interviews -- mainly new, but also featuring archival bytes from Wilson and others -- the story of Pacific Ocean Blue comes to life with countless in-depth tales of the music's composition, recording, Wilson's personal life, the promotional of the album, its aborted tour, and his relationship with the key people -- the Beach Boys, his then-current and former wives, bandmates, assistants, record label reps, fans, and collaborators -- that all aided in delivering the album.

Dreamer not only features a multitude of never-before-seen photos, but Sharp provides insight into nearly every song Dennis Wilson ever wrote. The book also features an exhaustive sessionography.

Mariah Carey's Attempt To Trademark 'Queen Of Christmas' Disputed

Mariah Carey is looking to trademark the title "Queen of Christmas," but she's getting some pushback.

Singers Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan, who each have their own valid claim to the crown are looking to prevent a monopoly on the term.

After Carey's March 2021 trademark claim was recently made public, Chan filed a formal declaration of opposition in court, and Love has hinted at doing the same, especially since she was given that title on The David Letterman Show.

Chan exclusively composes and performs Christmas music and she was first dubbed the "Queen of Christmas" by All Access in 2014. The New Yorker has also called her that.

Chan isn't looking to legally stake claim to the moniker, but rather prevent Carey from solely holding it herself.

Chan said, "Christmas is for everyone. It's meant to be shared; it's not meant to be owned." She went on to explain it with clarity: "It's not just about the music business. She's trying to trademark this in every imaginable way… Clothing, liquor products, masks, dog collars, it's all over the map. If you knit a ‘Queen of Christmas' sweater, you should be able to sell it on Etsy to somebody else so they can buy it for their grandma. It's crazy that it would have that breadth of registration."

Back in 2019, her classic song "All I Want for Christmas Is You" reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart 25 years after its release. Since then, it has become the first holiday song to reach one billion streams on Spotify.

Along with "Queen of Christmas," Carey also filed for exclusive rights to three other titles "Princess of Christmas," "QOC," and "Christmas Princess."

TL;DR:

  • Mariah Carey is looking to trademark the title Queen of Christmas, but she's getting some pushback from Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan, who each have their own valid claim.
  • Chan isn't looking to legally stake claim to the moniker, but rather prevent Carey from solely holding it herself.
  • Chan said, "If you knit a ‘Queen of Christmas' sweater, you should be able to sell it on Etsy to somebody else so they can buy it for their grandma."

Goo Goo Dolls' 'Iris' Surpasses One Billion Streams

Goo Goo Dolls' signature ballad "Iris" has surpassed one billion streams, according to Rock Cellar. The track, which appeared on the band's 1998 Dizzy Up The Girl album and written by John Rzeznik, peaked at Number Nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also featured in on the soundtrack to the Nicolas Cage / Meg Ryan film City Of Angels. Just released is the Goos' 13th studio set, Chaos In Bloom.

In 1999, "Iris" snagged a Grammy nomination for Record Of The Year, but lost to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." In the ensuing years, "Iris" was ranked at number 39 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Pop Songs."

In October 2012, "Iris" topped Billboard's "Top 100 Pop Songs 1992-2012" chart, which listed the top tunes from the magazine's first 20 years of the Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs chart.

Not too long ago, John Rzeznik spoke to WatchMojo about the power that "Iris" has held over people since he first wrote it nearly 25 years ago: "I don't know. That's one of those songs it was like lightening striking -- and then everybody going, 'Wow, that was amazing -- do it again!' It's just that it's got a very, sort of -- a very simple, basic emotional, sort of, theme to it."

Goo Goo Dolls perform tonight (August 19th) in Saratoga Springs, New York at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Happy Birthday, Robert Plant!!!

Happy Birthday to Robert Plant, who turns 74 on Saturday (August 20th)!!! Although Plant has enjoyed a successful solo career since 1982, he will always be best known for his years fronting Led Zeppelin and co-writing the majority of the band's songs with Jimmy Page.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are currently on the road in support of their second joint album, Raise The Roof. The set was released last November 19th and topped Billboard's Independent Albums chart, hit Number Three on the magazine's Top Country Albums list, and reached Number Seven on the Billboard 200.|

In October and November, Plant and latest solo band, Saving Grace, are set to play nine dates across Ireland and Scotland. In addition to Plant, Saving Grace features vocalist Suzy Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, along with guitarists Tony Kelsey and Matt Worley.

In October 2018, Plant released his latest solo set, Carry Fire, which peaked at Number 14 on the Billboard 200.

Released in 2020 was Digging Deep, Plant's double-disc solo compilation. The 30-track collection ties in with his critically acclaimed podcast of the same name, and includes three previously unreleased songs. The set features such Plant favorites as "Big Log," "Heaven Knows," "In The Mood," "Ship Of Fools," "Hurting Kind," and "Angel Dance," among others.

Among the guest appearances on the various tracks, which span Plant's now-38-year solo career, are Jimmy Page, Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, Phil Collins, Nigel Kennedy, Richard Thompson, and his side band Strange Sensation/ the Sensational Space Shifters.

In June 2019, Plant premiered his new podcast, titled Digging Deep. The promo for the new 'cast featured Plant setting the scene for the show, explaining, "Making records is a very personal experience. I was so deep to get away from that environment, then I was saying, 'let's get out of here!' But then, now and again, down the line, opening up some of the songs and looking back at 'em, I marvel at some of it. The players in the room were out of sight -- and they found me to be something that they hadn't been used to dealing with."

Out now on DVD and digital video is Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters Live At David Lynch's Festival Of Disruption. The eight-song performance was captured on October 8th, 2016 at L.A.'s Ace Hotel Theatre as part of David Lynch's inaugural Festival of Disruption, which raised money for The David Lynch Foundation. In addition to newer solo material, Plant dips into Zeppelin's back catalogue for updated takes on such classics as "Black Dog," "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You," "Going To California," and a medley of "Hoochie Coochie Man / Whole Lotta Love / Mona."

According to reports, Led Zeppelin reportedly turned down $14 million for two reunion performances at 2016's "Desert Trip" concerts in Indio, California. Showbiz411.com -- the site that broke the news on the concerts -- spoke to an insider that revealed that not only were all the headliners each receiving $14 million flat for their pair of weekend sets, but that Zeppelin was approached to reunite and once again, Jimmy Page said yes and Plant chose to pass. The source claimed, "Jimmy went crazy. He really wanted to do it." Also, although all the acts -- including the Who, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, and Neil Young -- signed on as favored nations regarding their fee, sources suggest that both McCartney and the Stones snagged more for their respective sets.

Robert Plant has three children with his ex-wife Maureen Wilson -- a daughter, Carmen Jane, who went on to marry Plant's longtime bass player Charlie Jones, and son Logan Romero. The couple's second child, Karac Pendragon, died at age five in 1977 from a stomach virus. Following Plant's divorce in 1983, Plant took up with his wife's sister, Shirley and fathered his youngest child, Jesse Lee.

Led Zeppelin's 1979 classic, "All Of My Love," was written by Robert Plant and John Paul Jones about the July 26th, 1977 death of Karac. Plant shed light on the massive blow the loss of his child had on his life: "Y'know, our fate, at, at times is so fragile, that when I lost my boy, I was 28 years old, and I was the King. I had two kids and everything was amazing. I had no ideas of dealing with tragedy, or anything in life, which wasn't just moving on. So when something as big -- there is nothing bigger, really, I don't think, than losing your child, and when that happens, you have to revue everything about yourself, about your condition, and about the future of your family. And that was. . . it was so, sobering that I've never, ever -- obviously -- been the same ever again from that day on."

Robert Plant said that Phil Collins provided the support necessary upon diving full scale into a solo career following Led Zeppelin's 1980 split: "I made my business to go out and start again at the age of 32 -- it's like, hysterical, really, when you think about it now. But I worked and worked with these guys -- Robbie Blunt, who was a particularly fine guitarist. And I was graced by my first two solo records Pictures At Eleven and (The) Principle Of Moments. A drummer contacted me and said, ‘I love (John) Bonham so much I wanna sit behind you when you sing. It was Phil Collins. His career was just kicking in and he was the most spirited and positive and really encouraging force, because you can't imagine what it was like, me trying to carve my own way after all that."

Prior to the release of his second album, 1983's The Principle Of Moments, which featured such '80s standards as "In The Mood" and "Big Log," Robert Plant spoke about the importance of moving out from under Led Zeppelin's massive shadow: "This next album is crucial. I mean, it's really weird for a bloke of my age to say that anything's crucial, I suppose when I've done so much -- but that's the whole thing about me. Then next step is very important, having been with Zeppelin for years and years. The first album that I've done away from that stable was pretty good. And the next one's got to. . . I've got to take everything that I know and everything that these guys I'm playing with know and shift across to gain a wider platform of what I can do, y'know, what we can all do together. And once we've achieve that, by March, April next year it should be able to go on the road."

Back in 2014, while publicizing the expanded reissues of the Zeppelin catalogue, Plant spoke to the NME and addressed Jimmy Page's claims of him being uninterested in teaming up, saying, "I feel for the guy. He knows he's got the headlines if he wants them. But I don't know what he's trying to do. So I feel slightly disappointed and baffled."

Plant revealed that he proposed working again with Page -- and presumably Zeppelin -- in an acoustic capacity: "A couple of years ago, I said, 'If you've got anything acoustic, let me know. I'll give it a whirl.' It was hands across the water. He just walked away. But we couldn't do anything proper. The weight of expectation is too great."

In 2012, Plant rush released a surprise live album from the Space Shifters, only two weeks after recording the set in London. The 15-track-collection, called Robert Plant Presents Sensational Space Shifters 7/12/12 HMV Forum, London, GB, includes tracks from Plant and bandmember Patty Griffin's solo works, blues covers of Howlin' Wolf and John Mayall tunes, along with handful of Led Zeppelin classics. In addition to Patty Griffin, the Space Shifters features members of Plant's pre-Band Of Joy group, Strange Sensations, including frequent Plant collaborator Justin Adams.

Despite the December 2007 Zeppelin reunion in London featuring himself, Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham filling in for his late dad John Bonham, Plant has been the lone hold-out in committing to a full-on reunion. Several of the industries' top promoters have essentially offered the band a blank check should they commit to any number of road dates.

In October 2012 at the New York City press conference following the press preview of Zeppelin's concert film, Celebration Day -- which, along with its accompanying CD, chronicles the 2007 reunion gig -- Plant played it coy and then downright rude to reporters clamoring for some type of statement about future Zeppelin plans. After some coaxing by the event's moderator, Plant finally answered the reunion question with a bit of respect for the reporters in the room: "We were so happy that we were actually gettin' it right (coughs) and taking it beyond what we thought we were about that night. There were moments in it where we just took off and pushed off in some place. The responsibility of doing that four nights a week for the rest of time is a different thing. 'Cause, we're pretty good at what we do; the tail should never wag the dog. If we're capable of doing something in our own time that will be what will happen. So any inane questions who are from syndicated outlets (laughter), you should just really think what it takes to answer a question like that in one second, y'know? We know what we've got."

Plant explained that Led Zeppelin constantly stayed ahead of the curve by never resting on their creative laurels: "You have to be creative and imaginative and move on. And I think the great essence of Led Zeppelin is the creativity and the imagination that developed with each project. And a project is a project. It's not just going back and visiting the past. It's moving forward."

Coincidentally, just as the Zeppelin reunion rumors first began to catch fire in 2007, Plant enjoyed the biggest success of his solo career with his collaboration with Alison Krauss on their joint album Raising Sand, which hit Number Two on The Billboard 200 album charts. Plant and Krauss' cover of the Everly Brothers' "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" scored the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Raising Sand producer T-Bone Burnett was sure that the duo would click immediately: "I know Alison's adventurous, and I didn't know Robert until we started working together. But, I've certainly followed him and I knew that he was adventurous, and I knew they were both interested in the history of music. So I suspected we could find common ground pretty easily."

In 2009, Plant was appointed a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) on the Queen's New Years Honors list, marking the first time that any member of Led Zeppelin has received an official accolade from Queen Elizabeth. The Queen's Honors are handed out twice a year, in June and at the New Year, and are awarded to people for all types of service, including the performing arts.

Although Robert Plant has had several distinct chapters in his legendary career, he's adamant that all of them -- from being a belting rock screamer in Led Zeppelin, to edgy pop songsmith of the ‘80s, and now the Americana/world music-influenced musician, are all equally authentic: "I was always 100 percent me, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it -- I wouldn't have done it. There weren't many tracks that Zeppelin didn't use; they were all pretty. . . there was a lot of incendiary material there. I play the game -- but I don't play the game. If I didn't play the game, I wouldn't be here -- but I like the game."

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss perform on Saturday (August 20th) in Stateline, Nevada at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey's.

Quickies: Selena Gomez, REMA, SEVENTEEN's Dino

Selena Gomez announced online that she has a new collaboration on the way with REMA. She posted a black-and-white snapshot of herself smiling ear to ear with the rising Nigerian star. The only detail she gave up was that it would be "Coming soon."

SEVENTEEN's Dino has tested positive for Covid and had to step away from the groups appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday evening (7-18). He's experiencing a mild sore throat and is under self-quarantine and will skip upcoming concerts. Dino's positive result marks the fourth case of the coronavirus to hit the K-pop group this year.
