Peter Frampton Wished He Tapped Songwriters To Help On 'Comes Alive!' Followup

45 years after releasing I'm In You -- his followup to 1976's Frampton Comes Alive! -- Peter Frampton admits he still has regrets. Despite both the title track and album both topping out at Number Two, Frampton recalls the entire experience as one bad decision after another.

Frampton looked back at attaining worldwide fame with the classic double live album, telling Guitar World, "All of a sudden I realized that I had a lot of friends that I didn't have before. Everybody had their two cents to put in, especially the people that were rubbing their hands together like this because I suddenly became the hen that laid the golden egg."

He admits that he was stressed out upon hitting the studio to start the I'm In You sessions -- even while Frampton Comes Alive! was still hot on the charts: "I knew that I couldn't follow it. That album took me six years to write; it was a live ‘best of' up until that point. There is a number from Humble Pie -- 'Shine On,' I cherry-picked (the) Wind Of Change, Frampton's Camel, (and) Somethin's Happening (albums). . . That was when I think I started to over-imbibe and wanted to numb myself. The golden hen was now constipated."

Looking back now, Frampton knows what he could've done to at least level the playing field for the followup album: "I should have probably commissioned every great writer there is and sat down and written with all of them. That would have been the only way to have dealt with that situation. I didn't want to make I'm In You. I didn't even want to hand it in. I didn't like it. I knew it wasn't good enough, but everybody was 'rush, rush, rush.' Everybody, one by one, would come to me with their own hidden agenda and say, 'The longer you wait, the harder it's going to be,' and all that stuff. I wanted to wait until I had the best material I could come up with, however long that would have taken. It could have taken a year, it could have taken two years."

All told, he remembers I'm In You as a mistake: "Various things happened. I lost a cassette tape that had a load of ideas on it -- that was devastating to me. I remembered some of them but not all of them. The bulk of my new material that I had up until that point disappeared. It was a painful record to make."

During the I'm In You period, Peter Frampton addressed both his and Fleetwood Mac's massive success a decade into their respective careers: "I think that Fleetwood Mac and myself are probably the two best examples of if you are good and you stick at it long enough, obviously that experience that you're going to gain. . . I mean, I started playing in front of 200 people and now it's 95,000, y'know? But, I think if you do have talent and you've got a good luck line and you stick around that long and you keep at it, In think you're going to make it."

Flashback: John & Yoko, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, & Keith Moon Jam For UNICEF

It was 53 years ago tonight (December 15th, 1969) that John Lennon and Yoko Ono assembled their legendary Plastic Ono Supergroup for a historic performance at London's Lyceum Ballroom. The event was part of UNICEF's Peace For Christmas concert, which featured a number of other performers including the Hot Chocolate Band, Jimmy Cliff, and the Rascals, among others.

Lennon's backing band featured George Harrison -- marking the final time the pair ever shared a stage together -- Eric Clapton, Keith Moon, bassist Klaus Voormann, Lennon's primary drummer at the time -- and future Yes sticksman Alan White, Billy Preston, Delaney & Bonnie and their backing band -- which included drummer Jim Gordon, keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, and bassist Carl Radle -- who the next year would for Derek & The Dominoes with Clapton -- and horn players Jim Price and Bobby Keys who would soon move on to greener pastures as part of the Rolling Stones' touring band.

Lennon led the ensemble through his and Yoko's current single -- "Cold Turkey" which was extended to nearly seven minutes. The band also performed Yoko's B-side "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking For Her Hand In The Snow) which topped out at over 15 minutes.

The late, great drummer Alan White remembered the evening's performance taking a turn for the bizarre once Keith Moon joined him onstage: "Keith Moon came in very close to the end of the jam. Got on stage and started beatin' -- literally almost trying to break one of my drums on the side -- the 16-inch tom. He was hittin' it and he had that look in his eyes, like he was a crazy man. So, it was just getting really hilarious."

The entire performance was recorded on both four-track soundboard tapes and two-track audience tapes, which was mixed in for ambiance. Although Lennon had wanted to release the performance soon after the show, the tapes were saved for the Live Jam bonus disc of the couple's 1972 double album set Some Time In New York City.

Ozzy Osbourne Says He Can't Walk Much Now

During a recent radio interview, Ozzy Osbourne revealed that he is still fighting to walk six months after having spinal surgery. He revealed that his inability to get around on stage may affects his 2023 tour.

Ozzy, who is also dealing with Parkinson's disease, told Yahoo News, "It is so f*cking tough because, I mean, I want to be out there. I want to be doing it. This f*cking surgery this guy did. F*cking hell, you have no idea."

He continued, "The thing is my head is all right, my creativity is OK, my singing OK but I just can't f*cking walk much now."

He went on, "I can't begin to tell you how f*cking frustrating life has become. It is amazing how you go along in life and one stupid thing can screw everything up for a long time. I have never been ill this long in my life."

Ozzy is slated to start his No More Tours 2 tour in May 2023.

Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr Join Forces For Abbey Road Studios Docx Premiere

On Monday night (December 12th), there was an extended Beatles family reunion led by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at London's Abbey Road Studios for the premiere of If These Walls Could Sing, according to The Daily Mail. In celebration of the hallowed studio's 90th anniversary, McCartney's photographer daughter Mary McCartney directed the film set to premiere on Disney+ on December 16th.

Also in attendance were McCartney and Ringo's respective wives, Nancy Shevell and Barbara Bach, Paul's other children Stella and James McCartney, along with Elton John and husband David Furnish, Spice Girl Melanie C, and George Martin's son and current Beatles archival producer, Giles Martin.

Ringo explained that although he and McCartney remain close, these days, their musical team-ups are far more casual than fans -- or concert promoters -- would like them to be: "Well, there won't be any half-reunion (of the Beatles). I mean, in 2010 he surprised me -- I was playing Radio City Music Hall and he played 'Birthday' which I played with him, because I wanted the opportunity to play with him again. And he's on the last record -- he's not on this one. So, we sort of, we do hang out a bit, y'know, what I mean, but we're not in each other's pockets. And if the opportunity's real, we play together -- I've played on a couple of his records, he's played on mine. But, no, we never sit there saying, 'Oh, yeah, we'll put it together and I'll do 'Yesterday' (laughs)."

New Book Coming On Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska' Album

The first extensive book on Bruce Springsteen's classic 1982 Nebraska album will be published on May 2nd. Deliver Me From Nowhere was written by author Warren Zanes, best known for his 2015 Tom Petty tome, Petty: The Biography.

Nebraska, an album comprised of home demos, was the stark, solo acoustic middle ground between 1980's sprawling double-record set, The River, and the 1984 mega-platinum blockbuster, Born On The U.S.A. Nebraska has often been cited as one of rock's most important albums, which revealed Springsteen to be one of the key singer/songwriters of his generation.

According to the official announcement:

Warren Zanes spoke to many people involved with making Nebraska, including Bruce Springsteen. He also interviewed more than a dozen celebrated artists, from Rosanne Cash to Steven Van Zandt, about their reaction to the album.

He interweaves these conversations with inquiries into the myriad cultural touchpoints, including Terence Malick's Badlands, that influenced Springsteen as he was writing the album's haunting songs. The result is a textured and revelatory account of not only a crucial moment in the career of an icon but also a recording that upended all expectations and predicted a home recording revolution.

Only months after finishing his and the E Street Band's 1980/'81 world tour behind The River, Bruce Springsteen wrote and recorded the 1982 Nebraska album, which touched upon the souls -- like himself -- whom life had either passed by or had cast out of society: "That was kinda rock bottom (laughs), y'know? It was, that was a record, I guess, where I came home from tour, I sat down and in about two months I wrote the whole thing, y'know? What happens when, y'know, all those things just break down? What happens when you're friends fail you -- when you fail your friends, and you are alone? That's kinda where Born In The U.S.A. started to come from." SOUND

Rolling Stones Producer Looks Back On 30-Year Tenure

As Don Was enters his 30th year as the Rolling Stones' record producer, the world renowned musician and record exec took time out to talk about his initial meeting with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Was, who was on a particularly hot streak, having produced Bonnie Raitt's Grammy Award-winning 1989 Nick Of Time album, was tapped to produce the Stones' 1994 Voodoo Lounge collection.

Was recalled the scene to Mojo, recalling, "They'd signed to Virgin Records and the label wanted them to have a producer. So I went to New York to meet them. And they were auditioning bass players at SIR. I was watching and then Mick and Keith came and sat on either side of me. Mick started talking about what they needed from a producer. And Keith started talking about why they didn't need a producer. And they would not yield the floor to the other guy."

He went on to say, "It went on like this -- both of them talking at the same time -- for probably two or three minutes, which is an incredibly long time. I was just going back and forth between them, thinking, What the hell is this? Is this a technique for weeding out the faint of heart? Then they finally ran out of breath. At which point, Keith said, 'You sure you want to be the meat in this sandwich?' (laughs)"

When pressed to define the Rolling Stones, Don Was explained, "Well, they are the most charismatic people I've ever met. I remember walking into the big studio at Ocean Way (in L.A.), it's just Mick and Keith and Charlie (Watts) in this cavernous room, and the room felt completely full. Their personas are like the blow-up dolls they had on the Steel Wheels tour, they're like five storeys high. And when they channel that into something, when they become the Rolling Stones, there's nothing like it in the world."

He went on to shed light on his unparalleled longevity with the band: "The reason I think I've lasted that long with them is I love the Rolling Stones. And I just want them to be the Rolling Stones, whatever that means. But what that means is they are all part of the fabric, no one guy is dominating the fabric. It's when they all join together that something larger than life happens."

Don Was, who's been the Stones' primary producer since 1993 had the dream job of not only digging tracks out of the archive for the 2010 deluxe Exile On Main St. reissue release -- but he was behind the boards as Jagger, Richards and former guitarist Mick Taylor put the finishing touches on some nearly-finished Exile-era tracks. We asked him what boundaries he set for himself before working on such an important project: "You bring respect, man. I'll tell you, the boundaries are laid down by Keith. Keith sent me a fax at the very beginning. He said, 'You don't have to make it sound like Exile -- it is Exile.' And that was it. That was the guiding principle."

Flashback: Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' Hits Number One

It was 54 years ago today -- December 14th, 1968 -- that Marvin Gaye scored the biggest hit of his career when "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" hit Number One and kicked off a seven-week run on top of the charts. The song had recently hit Number Two by Motown label-mates Gladys Knight & The Pips in a more upbeat version.

Amazingly, although "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" was Marvin Gaye's 24th Top 40 hit -- and seventh Top 10, it marked his first-ever chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100.

"I Hard It Through The Grapevine" was produced by Norman Whitfield who co-wrote the song with Barrett Strong. Whitfield is also best-remembered for his work with the Temptations and other Motown acts, co-writing and producing such hits as "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "I Can't Get Next To You," "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)," "(I Know) I'm Losing You," "Cloud Nine," "War," "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)," "Smiling Faces Sometimes," and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," among many others.

Doobie Brothers legend Michael McDonald told us he didn't initially want to record "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" for his 2003 covers collection titled, Motown: "For instance, 'Grapevine.' One of the reasons I probably didn't want to do it was I couldn't imagine singing it any other way than how Marvin Gaye sang it. Because his ad-libbing of the melody has kind of become the melody to most of us. So without fighting that urge to much, I just kinda went with singing the song kind of as I remembered him singing it."

Marvin Gaye went on to return to the Number One spot two more times before his 1984 death -- with "Let's Get It On" in 1973 and "Got To Give It Up (Pt. 1)" in 1977.

Adele Went To Therapy Five Times A Day During Divorce

Adele was going to therapy five times a day during her divorce from Simon Konecki.

According to BuzzFeed, the "Hello" singer opened up about taking care of her mental health during a recent show in Las Vegas.

She told the audience, "I started having therapy again because I went a few years without. I needed to start. Before, obviously, when I was going through my divorce I was basically having five therapy sessions a day."

She added, "But now I am doing it because I just want to make sure I'm topping myself up every week to make sure I can give you everything."

Adele revealed that performing normally "terrifies me and fells me with dread," but that she was using her recent sessions to get past that feeling.

She continued, "That is why I am not a big touring artist. I did it last time to prove I could do it. But this experience of being in a room this size, I think I might be a live artist for the rest of my life."

Bono Announces Beacon Theatre Run In NYC

Bono is bringing his Stories Of Surrender musical book tour back to New York City next spring. As it stands now the U2 frontman, who is promoting his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, has rolled out a total of eight dates at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre.

Earlier this fall Bono promoted his book and musical theatre chats in New York City, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Nashville, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Across the Atlantic, Bono hit London and Manchester, England; Glasgow, Scotland; Dublin, Ireland; Berlin, Germany; Paris, France; and Madrid, Spain.

Bono has been one of the leaders in the rock community to raise awareness of the devastating role poverty plays on shaping global matters: "It's hard to make this a popular cause. It's hard to make it 'pop,' y'know, and I guess that's what my job is, 'cause pop is often -- sadly often -- the oxygen of politics. Didn't John and Robert Kennedy come to Harvard? Isn't equality a son-of-a-bitch to follow through on? Isn't 'love thy neighbor' in the global village so inconvenient? God writes us these lines, but we have to sing them, and take them to the top of the charts. But it's not what the radio is playing, is it? I know."

JUST ANNOUNCED: Bono's "Stories Of Surrender" Beacon Theatre performances (subject to change):

April 16, 17, 21, 22, 26, 28, 29 - New York, NY - Beacon Theatre

ZZ Top & Lynyrd Skynyrd Joining Forces For Major Summer Tour

ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd are teaming up for a 23-date joint run this summer, dubbed "The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour." The trek kicks off on July 21st at West Palm Beach, Florida's iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre and runs all the way through September 17th when the two iconic Southern Rock legends hit Camden, New Jersey's Freedom Mortgage Pavilion. Tickets go on sale this Friday, December 16th, at 10 a.m.

It's going on 40 years after ZZ Top's MTV era-defining 1983 Eliminator album, which featured such instant band classics as "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," and "Legs." We asked guitarist Billy F. Gibbons how the band was able to embrace the 1980's while staying true to themselves musically: "Yeah, well as the old saying goes: 'One foot in the blues.' It keeps it honest and kinda straight ahead. We can narrow the range -- take it far left, far right; let's go back to step one -- the blues."

Frontman Johnny Van Zant told us that the best of Lynyrd Skynyrd's music has always seemed to defy genres: "They gave us a tag years ago of 'Southern Rock,' and to me I always thought that must mean it's 'Country Rock,' which is the truth, and around our house we were listening to Merle Haggard and George Jones, but we also watched Ed Sullivan and saw Elvis Presley and the Beatles, too, and loved all that stuff too, so there's no boundaries in music these days."

ZZ Top kicks off their latest string of dates on February 4th in Taupo, New Zealand at Taupo Amphitheatre Riverside Park.

Lynyrd Skynyrd next performs on February 23rd in San Antonio, Texas at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

Kiss Set For Final UK Performances This June

Kiss has announced the band's final UK gigs for this June as part of their ongoing "End Of The Road" tour. Five of the six of the dates will take place in major hubs in Britain -- with the tour wrapping in Glasgow, Scotland, with NME reported tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. GMT this Friday, December 16th.

The band said in a statement about their final go 'round:

All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who've filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years.

This will be the ultimate celebration for those who've seen us and a last chance for those who haven't. KISS Army, we're saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet and we'll go out the same way we came in. . . Unapologetic and Unstoppable.

Gene Simmons, who's been a songwriter for well over 50 years, told us that style will never trump substance when it comes down to the art of crafting a song, explaining that the groove and the melody need to be there before any of the bells and whistles: "At the end of the day, you're going to be judged by -- and I'm not the judge or jury, by any chance -- of the people, for the people, by the people. It's less about being in a punk band, 'cause other than the (Sex) Pistols and (the) Clash, there ain't no other punk bands. I know, we talk about the Misfits. . . but we're talking about successful bands."

Flashback: Bruce Hornsby & The Range Hit Number One With 'The Way It Is'

It was 36 years ago today -- December 13th, 1986 -- that Bruce Hornsby & The Range scored their sole Number One hit to date -- the poignant coming-of-age track and one-week chart-topper, "The Way It Is."

Hornsby -- a Williamsburg, Virginia native -- went on to score six more Top 40 hits over the next few years -- including the 1987's "Mandolin Rain" (#4) and "Every Little Kiss" (#14), 1988's "The Valley Road" (#5) and "Look Out Any Window" (#35), along with 1990's "Across The River."

In 1989, Don Henley's Bruce Hornsby co-written "The End Of The Innocence" peaked at Number Eight on the Billboard Hot 100.

When we last caught up to Bruce Hornsby, he told us he thinks "The Way It Is" hit the way it did because it was such a departure from the mainstream: "I think of Top 40 hits -- mine, others -- as novelty records, okay? I think of 'The Way It Is' as a novelty record in the best sense, in the same sense as I think of (Dire Straits') 'Sultans Of Swing' as a novelty record, or 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman. Those songs sounded so different from anything else, and their sound was, I guess, alluring to people."

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers will next perform on January 20th at Scottsdale, Arizona's Virginia G. Piper Theater. Following that, on January 22nd, Hornsby and the band will play Tucson's Fox Tucson Theatre.

In addition to shirts, caps and blankets that proclaim, alternately, "Peace Love Truth," "War Is Over," "Happy Xmas," there is a "Hair Peace" wool cap, a "Bed peace" blanket -- as well as a new "And so this is Christmas. . ." crewneck and greeting card.

John Lennon recalled the impetus to writing and recording the now-Christmas classic, 1971's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)": "What we wanted to do was have something (laughs) besides 'White Christmas' being played every Christmas, y'know? And there's always a war, right? There's always someone gettin' shot. So, every year you can play it and there's always someone being tortured or shot somewhere, so the lyrics stands in that respect."
