Happy Birthday, Rolling Stone Bill Wyman!!!

Happy Birthday to former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, who turns 86 today (October 24th). Wyman, who quit the Stones in 1991, was on hand for the band's 2012 London shows as part of their 50 & Counting Tour. Both Wyman and longtime fans were disappointed that he was relegated to only two songs during the shows, sitting with the band during "It's Only Rock N' Roll" and "Honky Tonk Women."

In 2020, Wyman set the record for the highest selling bass guitar at the three-day "Property From Bill Wyman And His Rolling Stones Archive" sale via Juliens Auctions. Wyman's 1969 Fender Mustang bass with a competition orange finish, which was a mainstay of Stones concerts and recording sessions in 1969 and 1970, sold for a whopping $384,000.

Also raising eyebrows was Wyman's legendary 1962 Vox AC30 Normal model amplifier, which snagged a cool $106,250 -- easily besting last year's sale of two of David Gilmour's prized amps. Wyman's Vox AC30 is particularly historic, seeing as Wyman owning professional gear the band could use cemented his membership into the Stones. A portion of the proceeds from the auction benefited the Prince's Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, and the Central Caribbean Marine Institute.

In 2019, Bill Wyman published his latest book featuring his previously unseen photos of the band. The 272-page tome, Stones From The Inside, features 246 color shots along with 28 black and white photos showcasing the band on-stage, backstage, and on the road. The book, which spans Wyman's decades with the band, also features timeless shots of such legends as John Lennon, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, John Belushi, and Dan Aykroyd, among others.

April 2018 saw the release of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings' latest album, Studio Time.

The recent documentary on Wyman, titled The Quiet One, is now available on demand. The Quiet One spotlights never before seen footage and stills from Wyman's massive personal archive and features testimony from Eric Clapton, early-Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham, Bob Geldof, Stones engineer Glyn Johns, and the Supremes' Mary Wilson.

Bill Wyman, who has recently battled prostate cancer, explained to Variety why he finally allowed his story to be documented: "My life has been an extraordinary adventure. The time feels right to delve into the archive and tell my story before I croak."

On October 28th, 2016 Wyman performed at the "Bill Wyman 80th Birthday Gala" at London's Indigo at The O2. Among the performers saluting the Stones bassist were: Robert Plant, Van Morrison, Mark Nobler, Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, Bob Geldof, and Steve Van Zandt.

From the band's earliest days, Bill Wyman and late-drummer Charlie Watts provided the solid rhythm section behind band leaders Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and the late Brian Jones. Wyman, whose real name is William Perks, was several years older than the rest of the band and caught the music bug much earlier than his bandmates, who were first smitten by the early Elvis Presley and Eddie Cochran singles. By the time Wyman joined the band, he was already a father and a veteran of Britain's Royal Air Force.

Wyman, who was also a songwriter, was all but barred from incorporating his own music into the band's repertoire. In the three decades Wyman was with the Stones, he was only able to get two of his songs onto the band's albums: 1967's "In Another Land" on Their Satanic Majesties Request, and "Downtown Suzie," an outtake from 1968's Beggar's Banquet that was eventually included on the 1975 Metamorphosis compilation. Wyman has also gone on record saying that he composed the Stones' signature opening riff to 1968's "Jumpin' Jack Flash," yet never received credit.

He released several critically acclaimed and musically diverse solo albums throughout the '70s and '80s, including Monkey Grip and Stone Alone, and even scored a surprise 1981 Top 20 UK hit with "(Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star."

Although Wyman's bass playing was always solid, he was affectionately dubbed the "invisible bassist," in contrast to his contemporaries Paul McCartney of the Beatles and the late John Entwistle of the Who, both of whom were considered more distinctive and innovative.

Among the many up-and-coming musicians Wyman discovered was the 14-year-old guitarist Peter Frampton.

Shortly after the band's successful 1989-1990 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour, Wyman officially quit the Stones, although the formal announcement wasn't made until 1993. Wyman explained at the time that he had gotten to a point where he wanted his time to be completely his own: "One of the main reasons I left the Stones was I didn't really want to tour anymore, and I didn't want to spend six months in a studio cutting a record. I didn't want to be that much away from my family. I do have a little family now -- of three little girls of 6, and 5, and nearly 3. I do like to be at home."

Following Wyman's departure, drummer Charlie Watts admitted that apart from making music with his old friend, he missed hanging out with him on the road: "Personally, it's devastating, 'cause I like Bill Wyman a lot. I used to go and sit in his room and he's a very amusing man. I mean, whether he's being serious to me -- when Bill's being serious, he's totally very amusing. So, I'm used to him. It's part of being on the road is, I'd go and knock on Bill's door -- whatever's going on. We'd laugh, or something."

Bill German, the author of Under Their Thumb -- How A Nice Boy From Brooklyn Got Mixed Up With The Rolling Stones And Lived To Tell About It, and the editor of the legendary Stones fanzine Beggars Banquet, told us that Mick Jagger has always been hell bent on doing whatever was necessary to change and modernize his musical approach -- even if it meant chucking Wyman out of the band: "1981 -- Mick goes to the Ritz to see a bass played named Busta 'Cherry' Jones, who winds up playing with David Byrne eventually. What happened was; Mick was going to see Busta 'Cherry' Jones with the possibility of installing him into (laughs) the Rolling Stones! And I didn't know that until a few years later when I'm sitting with Bill Wyman in London, and he reveals to me that Mick has tried to throw him out of the band (laughs) a few times and Mick would do this behind Bill's back, but he would get talked down by the other band members."

In 1990, Wyman published his memoir of his time with the Stones, titled Stone Alone. He followed that in 2003 with a lavish 500-plus page oversized coffee table book, Rolling With The Stones. After that he published Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey, chronicling the history of blues music in the south, and most recently The Stones - A History in Cartoons, which includes Wyman's doodles from over the years.

A book based on his recent photo exhibit, titled Wyman Shoots, is currently in the works. Wyman says that because his musician friends had such complete trust in him behind the lens, he's careful about what photos of them he chooses: "There's one or two dodgy (laughs) ones of Keith (Richards), y'know, in various forms of misbehavior, but that's about it really. I've got a great one of Jimmy Page sleeping on a plane with a cigarette (laughs) hanging out of his mouth, but I don't think I'll show it because it's not complimentary to him. There are a few things like that I wouldn't show."

Although Wyman is no longer a partner in the Stones franchise, he is considered the band's primary in-house historian and still contributes to their archival projects, including the recent Crossfire Hurricane documentary. Wyman explained in the 2010 Stones In Exile DVD that although Exile On Main Street proved to be among the greatest of the Stones' '70s albums, the sessions were far from being the most productive or professional of the era: "I suppose we had the band there -- the whole band there -- probably 30 percent, 40 percent of the time. The rest of the time it was just bits. Me and Charlie (Watts) and Mick didn't come -- Mick Taylor didn't come -- and me Charlie and Keith (Richards), so we'd work on something. 'Next day Keith wouldn't come because Mick (Jagger) wasn't there, so then Mick'd come and he'd see that Keith wasn't there and the next day he wouldn't come. And sometimes we'd all get there to a session and Keith wouldn't even come! He was upstairs sleeping! Charlie'd come five hours, y'know, me and Mick Taylor had come two hours, Mick had come an hour and Keith is upstairs, and he didn't come down to the session! And it was like, madness."

In 2006 Bill Wyman released a two-disc retrospective, Stoned Alone: The Solo Anthology 1974-2001.

In 2009 Wyman broke his 55-year smoking addiction -- which at times had him smoking up to five packs a day.

Bill Wyman performs frequently with his solo band the Rhythm Kings, who backed Paul Rodgers in December 2007 when he opened for Led Zeppelin at their reunion gig at London's O2 Arena.

Bill Wyman was on hand for the Rolling Stones' 2012 London shows as part of their 50 & Counting Tour. Wyman told us he felt as though his appearance was treated as almost an afterthought: "They wouldn't let me do anymore. I think maybe they were punishing me for leaving (laughs). I thought I'd be playing a lot more, y'know? And they said, 'Y'know, we only want you for two numbers.' And I said, 'I haven't even done a rehearsal -- I did one rehearsal' -- I said, 'I haven't done a soundcheck, or anything.' They said, 'You know 'em! You know 'em!' Y'know, I just did the two -- what was it, 'Honky Tonk Women' and 'It's Only Rock N' Roll.'"

Motley Crue & Def Leppard Roll Out 2023 International Dates

Fresh off their North American "Stadium Tour," Motley Crue and Def Leppard are paring off next years a set for a 28-date South American and European trek dubbed the "World Tour." The news comes on the heels of the massive success of 2022's North America's "Stadium Tour" with under-bill performers Poison and Joan Jett & The Heartbreakers, which grossed over $173 million during its 36-date run.

The new tour, which kicks off in February and wraps in July, will take in stops in Mexico, Columbia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, England, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Ireland.

Motley Crue issued a joint statement, which reads:

We had an incredible time playing 'The Stadium Tour' in North America this summer and we truly can't wait to take the show around the globe with 'The World Tour' in 2023. Crueheads in Latin America and Europe: Get ready! We're coming for you next and can't wait to finally see all of you out there again next year!

Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott added:

After finally getting back on the road and having a monumental summer tour in the U.S. and Canada this year, we're beyond thrilled to be bringing this massive stadium tour to major cities all over the world, and kicking off Europe in Sheffield where it all started for us 45 years ago. We're looking to forward to seeing you out there, somewhere soon!

Nikki Sixx told us that Motley Crue always has one goal whenever it goes onstage: "If we're the greatest we can be, that's exciting, and that's what I believe that Mick (Mars) and Tommy (Lee) and Vince (Neil) all want too. They want to be the greatest rock band that Motley Crue can be. That's why we always try to come up with new, twisted versions of our production, and I think our shows are so potent and, I think, contagious. It's fun and it's horrifying all at the same time."

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen told us he and his bandmates always look forward to playing their hits out on the road: "Every night when someone's singing along -- especially when there's a lot of young kids there, 16-year-olds and that -- it is fresh, actually makes you feel really good when there's a whole new breed of people just singing away to songs that you've done. It doesn't really matter whether it's a new song or an old song, it's still our song, so it's a huge compliment. It really is, it's the best thing in the world."

Ed Sheeran Started Writing A James Bond Theme Before Billie Eilish Got the Gig

Ed Sheeran was first approached to write a James Bond theme song in 2019before the studio decided to hire Billie Eilish instead. She and her brother, Finneas went on to win an Oscar and Golden Globe for their music used in the film.

Billboard reported that Sheeran had already done all the meetings and started work on it when the movie suddenly changed directors and scripts.

He said, "I'm not gonna pretend it didn't hurt not doing it. But if they came back I'd be like, ‘yeah, yeah, of course, yeah!'"

As an English performer, penning a Bond theme song is one of Ed Sheeran's bucket list items.

Peter Frampton Prepping First Self-Written Album In 47 Years

Peter Frampton is currently working on his first entirely self-written album in over 45-years. The last time the guitar legend issued an album with no co-writes or cover versions was 1975's Frampton collection -- which featured two of his most beloved tunes -- "Show Me The Way" and "Baby, I Love Your Way." Now, at age 72, he's going at it alone for his next collection.

Frampton spoke to Uncut and explained," "I'm recording brand-new material right now. No co-writers, all my own songs, and I'm throwing out a lot already because every track's got to be a winner. I'm going where no Frampton has gone before."

Frampton was forced to slow down his road work upon discovering he's suffering from a degenerative muscle disease called Inclusion-Body Myositus (IBM), that slowly weakens the body's muscles.

Next month, Frampton will begin his long-awaited farewell European tour. Frampton has already let it be known that due to the effects of IBM, he'll be forced to perform sitting down. Regarding his upcoming European jaunt, he said, "Through all the ups and downs you have to pick yourself up and move on. I don't ever give up on things. That's why I didn't give up on the farewell tour coming to the UK and Europe. It was a must for me. And if it goes well I might be able to play other places too. I would love to do more shows. So, It's an indefinite farewell, really."

When we caught up with Peter Frampton, he was particularly excited about the upcoming collection which will mark his first original album since 2010's critically acclaimed, Thank You Mr. Churchill: "The next record after this one will be a solo record. The blues album -- All Blues -- and this one, Forgets The Words, is the Peter Frampton Band. Y'know, we all share in these two. I'll use my band on some of the solo stuff, but I wanna stretch out, just use some different players. The solo record, which will be next, it might be longer than we think, because it's got to be -- it's going to be -- the best solo album I've ever done -- studio one."

Sole-co-founding member Don Henley said a while back he was confident the Eagles are still performing at the top of their game: "The music is really tight. We've got some really good backup musicians, an incredible horn section, we've really worked on putting a good show together. The show is about three hours long, 30 songs, and it's just very, very polished."

And then they say, 'Well, let's play blah-blah-blah,' and I go, 'OK!' And then I go to the Tubes and go, 'Whaddya you guys wanna play?' And then I go to my band and say 'Whadda we want to play?'"

Lil Nas X Delays LA Show, Told Fans He Was Throwing Up

When Lil Nas X got sick before his performance in Los Angeles on Wednesday (10-19) he made sure his fans knew the details. From a microphone backstage, he announced that he needed a little extra time to prepare, because he threw up.

He said, "Can y'all hear me? I just vomited so give me five minutes. It's not a joke. Give me a second."

He entered the stage 10 minutes later and performed "Panini" before speaking to the crowd. He explained to fans what happened, and pointed to a cup on the stage, that was there in case he got sick again. Luckily none occurred during the concert.

This wasn't the first time Lil Nas X had to pause a show to complete some personal business backstage. During a concert in Atlanta last month, he announced from backstage that he was in the midst of pooping and would be back in "like a minute or two."

Shakira Teams With Ozuna For New Single

As Shakira gears up for her 12th studio album, the Colombian superstar has called on Ozuna for collaboration on her new single, "Monotonía."

The song lyrics spell out the boredom of when a couple gets too comfortable in a relationship.

The two also star in a wild video that starts off with Shakira singing to Ozuna in the snack aisle of a grocery store before a bazooka blows a large hole in her chest. Somehow still alive, she picks up her still-beating heart in an attempt to keep the romance alive.

Both the video and single were officially released this week.

Flashback: John Lennon Ends Retirement And Releases '(Just Like) Starting Over'

It was 42 years ago Sunday (October 23rd, 1980) that John Lennon's "comeback" single "(Just Like) Starting Over" was released, breaking Lennon's then-five year hiatus from recording. Lennon had devoted himself to becoming a self-proclaimed "house husband" following the birth of his and Yoko Ono's son Sean in 1975. "(Just Like) Starting Over" was a teaser for the forthcoming joint album between him and Yoko called Double Fantasy, which was released on November 17th. It was the last song completed for the album, using portions of Lennon's unfinished songs "My Life" and "The Worst Is Over."

At the time of the song's release, Lennon recalled how he immediately knew that the song had commercial potential: "It was obvious because it was the one where the musicians got very loose. Because it was so simple rock n' roll, there was no prob -- y'know, they really relaxed and they'd all be like that after it. Even though I don't think it's the strongest track, perhaps, but 'Starting Over' was the best way to start over. And to me, it was like going back to 15 and singing ala (Elvis) Presley (sings, imitating Elvis), like that. And it's a kind of parody, but not really a parody."

Lennon's assistant Fred Seaman says that Lennon never considered "(Just Like) Starting Over" as being among his most inspired creations: "'Starting Over' was what John would call a 'formula song.' It was kind of a pastiche -- a little bit of Elvis (Presley), a little bit of Roy Orbison, a little bit of other rockers that influenced John. And the lyrics are cliched, and it's a song that John didn't particularly enjoy writing or recording, but he felt he had to because the marketplace expected it."

Seaman says that in 1980, Double Fantasy producer Jack Douglas played an integral role in getting Lennon up to speed with modern recording techniques: "He hadn't been in the studio for a long time. He was behind in the technology, and his way of coping with it was, he just wanted more and more tracks. He wanted to multi-layer his voice -- y'know, two, three, (laughs) 10 times. He didn't like the sound of his raw voice and Jack accommodated him, and in the end, they got a great sounding record out of it."

Prior to Lennon hitting the studio in early August 1980, Lennon had Douglas transcribe his demos and was rehearsing the musicians in secret, with none of them knowing who they would be recording with. The night before the first session, all the players finally gathered at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota for a makeshift and loose rehearsal of the songs.

Jack Douglas recalls that Lennon had a Fender Rhodes electric piano, just inside of his apartment to work out ideas either when he first entered the apartment or vice versa. It was the night before the start of the Double Fantasy sessions that Lennon sprung on the musicians what would be his comeback single: "After that rehearsal at the Dakota, the night before the studio, we're all walking out. Almost everyone's gone except (guitarist Hugh) McCracken, (bassist Tony) Levin, and myself. We're, like, we're approaching the door, and John -- just before we got to the door, said, 'Before you go, Jack, I want you to hear this song.' And he played Tony and Hughie and I 'Starting Over' on the Rhodes, sang it, and sat down. . . And I said, 'John, that's a great song, it's perfect for this record, why don't we do that the first song that we do, so that we're rehearsing it for a little while and then recording it. And that way you'll get a good vibe with the whole rhythm section, 'cause you'll be working on a song with them from scratch.' And he said, 'That's a great idea,' and that was the first song we recorded."

Stephen Bard, co-host of the leading Beatles podcast, 'Fabcast,' recalled hearing "(Just Like) Starting Over" for the first time in October 1980: "'(Just Like) Starting Over' was a genius record from the first moment; with that guitar, and that voice, and that kind of almost strange delay, and there's the guy who made it all happen for us! He's back! What a beautiful introduction to that record. And then the drums kick in and it's off to the races. So, hearing it for the first time on the radio was a major moment. And I thought, ‘Wow, this is a hit!'"

Upon the release of Double Fantasy album, John Lennon was excited to spread his positive message to the baby boomer generation: "When I was singing and writing this and workin' with her, I was visualizing all the people of my age group; I'm singing to them. I'm saying, 'Here I am now, how are you? How's your relationship going -- did you get through it all? Wasn't the '70's a drag (laughter)? Here we are, let's try to make the '80s good, y'know?' It's not out of our control. I still believe in love, I still believe in peace, I still believe in positive thinking. Where there's life, there's hope. Because I always consider my work one piece and I consider that my work won't be finished until I'm dead and buried and hope that's a long, long time."

Def Leppard has always walked the fine line between pop and metal. Phil Collen told us the band took great pride in its massive pop crossover success with Hysteria: "Hysteria was. . . We had seven singles off that album, and where we really got a lot of fans is when it went into the Top 40 realm. So yeah, the pop thing, we're not embarrassed about that or ashamed. That's what we do. We're the hybrid. We always try to be."

Back in 2019, during their band's acceptance speech at the Rock Hall, frontman Joe Elliott explained that Def Leppard has always had its eyes on the future: "You have stayed on board with us for the best part of the following 36 years and supported us through some tough times along the way. But those tough times have helped make this band what it is today. It's solid, we're appreciative of who we are, and what we stand for. Those songs written over the years were always our main priority and although it seemed that there was always a looming sense of tragedy around every corner, we just wouldn't let it in."

Post Malone Injured During Concert In Atlanta

Post Malone fell and twisted his ankle on stage this week during a concert in Atlanta. He remained on his back for a bit and then finally got up and told the crowd that he tripped on the little holes in the middle of the stage where fire comes out of.

He told the audience, "So, if my dance moves aren't 100 percent, you gotta forgive me tonight, ladies and gentleman. I'ma do my best."

While Post played it off cool as a minor twist, concert attendees noticed that he was struggling to walk on stage as the show proceeded.

He recently spent time at the hospital and had to cancel shows after falling in a hole on stage in St. Louis.

45 Years Ago Today: Lynyrd Skynyrd's Plane Crashes

It was 45 years ago today (October 20th, 1977), that a plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in a swamp near Gillsburg, Mississippi. At the time, the group was en route to its next show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The crash took the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant; guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines; Skynyrd manager Dean Kilpatrick, as well as the plane's two pilots Walter McCreary and William Gray. Three days before the crash (October 17th), the band released its fifth album, Street Survivors, which featured the soon-to-be classics "What's Your Name" and "That Smell." The album cover, which featured the band seemingly engulfed in flames, was eventually substituted with another photo in light of the horrific plane crash. In 2007, the 30th anniversary reissue reinstated the original album cover.

Lynyrd's Skynyrd's head of security Gene Odom, who was on the plane and one of the 20 survivors, spoke to filmmaker Tony Beazley and recalled the state of Ronnie Van Zant's body after the fatal crash: "Ronnie Van Zant had an eight-inch little nick and a fractured bone in his leg. His own father, when he went to identify the body the next day -- October 21st -- said also, that when they pulled Ronnie out, Ronnie looked like he was asleep. No injuries. He said that he just had a little bump right here behind his ear -- a little cut. And Lacy (Van Zant) didn't know his leg was broke. He says, 'He just looked like he was laying there asleep.'"

All the other members of the band suffered horrific injuries, from which they eventually recovered. Two years later, survivors Gary Rossington and Allen Collins (guitars), Billy Powell (keyboards) and Leon Wilkeson (bass) formed a new group, the Rossington-Collins Band. A decade after the plane crash, the surviving members of Skynyrd regrouped under the legendary name and played a series of dates to mark the anniversary with Johnny Van Zant, the youngest brother of Ronnie Van Zant, stepping in as his permanent replacement.

When we last caught up with Gary Rossington -- who broke both arms, both legs, both wrists, both ankles and his pelvis in the plane crash -- was asked what motivates him and his bandmates to keep the Skynyrd name alive: "Gosh, it's just, y'know, you gotta carry on, and go through it. If you take the lives of just any seven individuals and follow them, tragedy happens, y'know? And it just happened to us. And we just kept carryin' on, we're doin' it for the guys that aren't with us, and for us, and for the music and the name and -- it's what we are."

In August 2018, the definitive and authorized Skynyrd documentary, If I Leave Here Tomorrow, premiered on Showtime. Gary Rossington told Yahoo Entertainment why director Stephen Kijak's doc works where so many others failed, explaining, "All the other documentaries were negative, and they really didn't show how when we started, we were brothers. We'd die for each other. We grew up together, y'know? We were so happy, and it was a family. (The film) shows us, me and Ronnie (Van Zant) looking right at each other, and it was like, all my friends are dead and gone. I just went, 'Oh, my God.' It's just real sentimental to me. I see all the memories and they're alive; they're like jumping beans in my brain."

FAST FORWARD

Finally released in 2020 was Street Survivors: The True Story Of The Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash. Former drummer Artimus Pyle, who served as a producer on the film, said in a statement: "This film's story -- MY story -- is not just about the plane crash but also about my personal relationship with the genius that was Ronnie Van Zant -- whom I loved like a brother and still miss to this day."

Back in 2017, the heirs of Ronnie Van Zant and late-bandmembers Steve and Cassie Gaines, along with founding guitarist Gary Rossington, sued Pyle and Cleopatra Records in an effort to block the movie. After an appeal, Pyle was permitted to tell his own life story.

Lynyrd Skynyrd next performs on November 13th at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

  • Motley Crue is promising a major announcement this morning (Thursday, October 20th), which many are expecting to be news about the band's 2023 plans. Multiple sources are reporting the rumor that guitarist John 5 might be subbing for Mickey Mars, who's been battling health issues over the years.
    • John 5 has posted online that his replacing Mars is "just a rumor." (MetalWani)

  • Paul Stanley had some pointed words for both Chris Cuomo and Kanye West. The Kiss frontman tweeted a response to the troubled rapper's antisemitic remarks on the NewsNation program Cuomo. Stanley posted: "If you saw someone on the street who was clearly disturbed, speaking nonsensically and spewing hate speech WOULD YOU INTERVIEW THEM ON TV?? This is a dangerous, self-serving version of click bait that legitimizes the ravings of someone who's mentally ill. We all deserve better."
    • Stanley went on to write: "Let Me Be Clear. I don't advocate 'silencing' views. Everyone has the right to speak their opinion but not everything that happens or is said deserves the same coverage. Televising or putting in print someone's views needs to take into account the credibility of the speaker."

  • Brian Johnson recalled the one-and-only time he crossed paths with AC/DC's Bon Scott -- the man he would replace in 1980. In his new memoir, The Lives Of Brian, set for release on October 25th, Johnson writes about how in the early-1970's, his band Geordie was playing on the same bill as Scott's pre-fame band Fang, who were the opening act: "He was one of the wildest-looking cats that I'd ever seen. Coconut-bob hair. Abe Lincoln beard. He looked like an elf. But, f*** me, the guy could sing. What he was singing wasn't rock 'n' roll though. It was more like. . . prog-folk. Along the lines of Jethro Tull's Living In The Past. Only proggier. And folkier. At one point, he even whipped out a wooden recorder and started to play in a way that would have brought tears to the eyes of Mrs. Patterson, my old teacher."
    • Johnson went on to wrote, "I never saw Bon again, I'm very sorry to say. But it's so strange to me that our fates entwined on that one night on the Torquay seafront in the freezing cold. I wish that I could have got to know him better." (Ultimate Classic Rock)

  • During a chat with Music Radar, Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy sang the praised of Metallica's James Hetfield. Kennedy who also sings and plays guitar, remains awestruck at the Metallica leader's prowess at handling two major duties for his band at the same time: "That's the thing that amazes me; I watch a guy like James Hetfield and it's amazing how he can come up with those very rhythmic riffs and then sing over the top the way he does. I find that very inspiring. I find that occasionally, there will be something that will stump me, but with enough time, if I just put in the time and keep practicing and doing it over and over and over, I'll generally be able to land on my feet." The Who's Live Career Chronicled In New Book

Just released is The Who: Concert Memories From The Classic Years, 1964-1976, by author Edoardo Genzolini. According to the book's announcement, "The reader will be thrown into untold stories, hundreds of previously unpublished photographs, and uncirculated recordings clarifying the misinformation, myths, and legends. It's a labor of love from a fan for fans that gives voice to a collective consciousness that might otherwise fall silent over time."

Drummer Kenney Jones recalled to us his first tour with the Who back in 1979, when he was thrown into the mix of keeping time between not one -- but two virtuosos: "I was just learning how to sit into the groove of working with (John) Entwistle and bass, lead guitar and Pete (Townshend). It was like sittin' in the missile of two lead guitarists -- and my foot was probably the bass (laughs)."

Although Pete Townshend's gravity-defying leaps are now a thing of the past for the 77-year-old, the Who's concerts still includes plenty of Townshend's signature "windmilling": "I still do that, yeah. Y'know, the reason that I do it is (laughs) not 'cause it has any function anymore. But whenever I do it, it's a cheap shot. I just go like that and the crowd go mad. So it's kind of lucky; if it's getting a bit quiet, I just swing my arm. If Roger needs a bit of help (laughter), I swing my arm."

Flashback: The Rolling Stones' 'Angie' Hits Number One

It was 49 years ago today (October 20th, 1973) that the Rolling Stones' "Angie" hit Number One. The track, which was the lead single from the band's chart-topping Goats Head Soup collection, marked their second Number One single of the 1970's -- following 1971's "Brown Sugar." The Stones would go on to top the Billboard Hot 100 only one more time in the decade when "Miss You" held down the top spot in 1978.

Over the years there have been conflicting stories about the inspiration of the tune, citing David Bowie's first wife Angela as the subject of "Angie," with Keith Richards, who named the song, claiming that it was written for his longtime paramour and muse, the late-Anita Pallenberg.

During a recent interview with Mojo, Mick Jagger recalled the writing of "Angie": "Keith was the prime writer of that one. I obviously wrote a lot of the melodies and lyrics, but the chorus and the music he wrote. Credit where it's due. . . It was just a name. Keith made it up."

Back in 1973, while on tour Down Under, Mick Jagger was asked about how he and Keith Richards chose the subjects for the Rolling Stones' songs: "You just write about what you see and what you feel and that's what I do, y'know? So, I mean, most American lyric writers over the last five years all they've done is write about peace in Vietnam, y'know -- so I wonder what they're gonna write about now, y'know? The traditional, sort of rock n' roll song or pop song is, like, just about women, y'know -- or love. And that's a pretty good tradition, y'know?"

Despite co-writing some of the era's best love songs -- back in '73, Keith Richard maintained he wanted nothing to do with sentimentality: "I don't see a lot to be sentimental about. I think sentimentalism is probably -- it's probably a lucrative road to travel, but I don't get sentimental about things because it doesn't lead to clarity of thought or anything. I hate to get sentimental about too many things, y'know?"

The Rolling Stones' Goats Head Soup was released on August 31st, 1973 and went on to top the Billboard 200 album charts for a solid month.

The album, which had its basic tracks recorded in November and December 1972 in Kingston, Jamaica's Dynamic Sound Studio, featured two Top 20 hits -- the chart-topping "Angie," and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)," which peaked at Number 15.
