Bryan Adams Feels Challenged And Free At This Stage Of His Career

Bryan Adams feels that in today's climate veteran artists have much more freedom than they did 20 years ago. Ultimate-Guitar transcribed some of Adams' recent interview on Britain's BBC Radio 2, in which he talked candidly about the state of his and his peers' careers, explaining, "In some ways I feel more inspired now than ever to continue to make music because it's so much more challenging to get anything going. You're not really allowed, after you've had quite a bit of success, to carry on. It's very difficult to get magazines interested in you, it's all kinds of things. After you've been around, you'd think it'd be easy, but it's not, It's actually easier if you're 21."

Out now Bryan Adams' latest album, So Happy It Hurts, features him credited with vocals, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, backing vocals, drums, organ, percussion, and Fender Rhodes piano.

When pressed about accepting the state of the music business as it stands today, Adams said, "I don't accept anything, I really don't. I just get on with it, and accept that It's a bit like the wild west out there now with music. If you want to carry on, just carry on. I don't have to accept anyone's rules, I can make my own rules."

Bryan Adams admitted to us that his one rule in creating music -- whether it was the classics he wrote back in the 1980's or today -- is simply to please himself with his work: "The reason I started writing was because I enjoyed the creative process of creating something from nothing. I worked with some superb people over the years, and always the mission was to try and create something that we like. The idea of trying to appeal to somebody else is impossible. You gotta write music for yourself."

Bryan Adams performs tonight and tomorrow (May 10th and 11th) at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Flashback: The Rolling Stones Begin Recording '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'

It was 57 years ago today (May 10th, 1965) that the Rolling Stones began recording their signature tune "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" at Chicago's legendary Chess Studios. Co-writer Keith Richards began writing the song in the early hours of the previous May 7th, while the group was on tour in Clearwater, Florida. In the middle of the night, Richards woke up with the distinctive eight-note riff in his head and recorded it on a portable tape recorder he traveled with. According to Richards, the actual tape contains 15 seconds of the song's riff and "40 minutes of him snoring."

The next morning, Richards played the demo to Mick Jagger with the simple instructions that, "The line that goes with this riff is 'I can't get no satisfaction.'" Jagger immediately wrote a set of lyrics that were considered risque for 1965. He recalled to the BBC that, "The lyrics to this were truly threatening to an older audience. This song was perceived as an attack on the status quo."

When the group began sessions for the song on May 10th at Chicago's Chess Studios -- where their idols Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf had recorded their classic hits -- Richards experimented with a new Gibson Fuzz Box for his guitar. He had originally intended for a horn section to supply the song's introduction, but it was the rest of the band -- which then included the late Brian Jones on guitar, bassist Bill Wyman, and drummer Charlie Watts -- that convinced him to keep the "fuzz guitar" on the track despite Richards' fear that it sounded "too gimmicky."

Years later, Richards said that he originally thought the song would only be good for use as an album track, admitting to author Phillip Norman that, "I never thought it was commercial enough to be a single."

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" debuted on the Billboard Top 40 on June 19th, 1965, and on July 10th it hit Number One, topping the charts for four weeks. Over the years, the song has been covered by artists as diverse as Otis Redding, Devo, and Britney Spears.

Although the song would remain a live staple for the group until 1972, it was retired from live performances until 1981. The group opened the majority of their 1997-1998 Bridges To Babylon Tour with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," marking the first time the song was not performed as a concert's closing number or as an encore.

Well over 50 years after being pegged the bad boys of rock, Mick Jagger admits that the Rolling Stones were particularly mellow seeing as how crazy the rock world became by the end of the 1960's: "In those days, what the press portrayed as wild, was actually in our world now, quite tame, y'know? But, for those days people were very easily shocked. You've got to remember it was still a very shockable society there wasn't the kind of scandal mongering quite in this way as there is now, which is kind sort of scandal on a daily basis -- there's a stable diet of it, I think. But they love scandal, of course, the newspapers, so they used to play it up a lot. So even though we didn't do that many shocking things in the early days (laughs) people were easily shocked."

Although certain songs in their catalogue have been revamped over the years, Keith Richards explained that for the most part, he has no interest in changing the arrangements of the Stones' greatest songs: "A lot of these things are in their time, and they belong where they belong. And to fiddle about with them and treat them as, y'know, they're 'Mona Lisa's,' or something would be pointless. All the big ones and the best ones that everybody knows, we'll leave them as they are. Y'know, I won't recall nothing and say, 'We shoulda done this or shoulda done that.' Y'know, 'cause they're in their time and space. That's where they are."

On July 10th, 2015 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of their first chart-topper, the Stones released a limited edition, numbered 12-inch version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" on 180-gram vinyl. The band's groundbreaking track was featured on the A-side, with the B-side including both original U.S. and UK flip sides: "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man" and "The Spider And The Fly," respectively.

The record was housed in a sleeve featuring award-winning photographer David Bailey's shot of the group, recreating the original 7-inch single artwork. The tracks were mastered by Carl Rowatti at Trutone Mastering Labs and cut from the original mono master tapes.

Happy Birthday, Donovan!!!

Happy Birthday to singer-songwriter Donovan, who turns 76 today (May 10th)!!! Donovan, whose last name is Leitch, is best known for his string of 1960's hits including "Mellow Yellow," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Jennifer Juniper," "Atlantis," "Catch The Wind," "Colours," "Riki Tiki Tavi," "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," and the 1966 chart-topper "Sunshine Superman." In 2019, Donovan's documentary Donovan & The Beatles premiered on Sky Arts in the UK.

Donovan recently discovered a track, "Still Waters," from his 1969 sessions featuring Nils Lofgren, which is featured on his new vault release, Lunarian. Donovan recalled the future E Street Band guitarist, saying, "When we met, I realized Nils was like me: a one-off guitar player, with his piece of fabric nailed to his Telecaster -- a road gypsy boy."

Out now is Donovan's latest studio set, called Shadows Of Blue, which was recorded in Nashville. In 2014 Donovan was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. In 2012, former touring partner John Mellencamp inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Back in 2009, Donovan made headlines when he joined old friends Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at New York City's Change Begins Within concert benefiting the David Lynch Foundation and Transcendental Meditation education. Donovan reflected on his trip to Rishikesh with the Beatles in early 1968: "Transcendental Meditation naturally unfolds any student's full potential. 41 years ago (laughs) -- or was it last year, boys? We traveled to India (laughs) to see if was true what we'd only read about in the books that meditation is the real way to be fulfilled. We found it to be true and we sang out the good news in our songs. It's really simple; (Laughs) Change begins within."

In 2008 he released the three-hour documentary spanning his life and career. The DVD called Sunshine Superman: The Journey Of Donovan -- which was seven years in the making -- featured an additional two hours of bonus featurettes, including vintage concert and TV performances, a poetry recording session with his father, insights on his work in Transcendental Meditation, and even a short bio on his guitar maker.

With the release of the DVD, Donovan said that he's happy to finally document his early career as wandering beat songwriter in Britain: "When I came out of bohemia, it was actually bohemian ideas that invaded popular culture -- and good thing too. And on the wings of folk music, because in the folk clubs, the beat clubs, the art schools, that's where all the books were. And the girls with the books wore long dark hair, black mascara, pure white skin, pretty much (laughs) kinda goth, yeah! And they were the thinking girls y'know?"

Among the highlights of all of Donovan's live shows is his rendition of his 1966 hit "Mellow Yellow." Donovan credits legendary producer Mickie Most for singling the song out for the monster hit it became: "It's curious -- 'Mellow Yellow' was a one-off sort of fun song that I wrote at an after-show party in Sweden. And it was a throwaway song. And Mickie would listen to the new selections and say 'OK, what do you got?' and I'd go through them and he'd immediately had known and say 'That's a single.' I said, 'What, 'Mellow Yellow?' He said, 'Yeah, that's it.' Said, 'My goodness, that's just a throwaway.' He said, 'That's it!'"

Donovan recently published The Autobiography Of Donovan: Hurdy Gurdy Man, which shed new light on his early life and his friendships with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Rolling Stones. The book also revealed Donovan's part in collaborating on several Beatles songs, including "Yellow Submarine" and "Rocky Raccoon."

Donovan also released the career-spanning box set Try For The Sun: The Journey Of Donovan, and appeared on stage with Beach Boys' Mike Love at a recent lecture on Transcendental Meditation.

Metallica Fan Gives Birth During Band's Concert

The prp.com reports that according to Figueiro, her newborn son arrived just as Metallica were closing their set with "Enter Sandman."

Figueiro posted her story on social media, and Metallica even shared her story via their Instagram per a translated image.

Whitesnake leader David Coverdale added:

Once again it's time to feel the sting of the Scorpions and the bite of the Whitesnake!!! Can't Wait!!!

Klaus Meine told us that metal fans who stayed away from shows in the 1990's have been back in full force in recent years: "When we toured in the States -- and pretty much everywhere around the world -- for all the bands that were big in the '80s, it was, like, uncool to go and see an '80s band, y'know? All of a sudden, in the last couple of years, the rock fans were back, and they enjoyed themselves, and everybody had a great time."

We asked David Coverdale what it takes for him to hit the stage today and deliver the goods: "Passion. It's not wanting to let people down. I've been doing this -- Oh, my God -- if you involve the (Deep) Purple stuff, we're coming up to five decades. And I've always felt an immense debt to the people who support our music -- and not disappoint them. 'Cause if I disappoint them -- I can't do what I do."

All Six Duran Duran Members Performing At Rock Hall Induction

All six members of Duran Duran will be on hand this November 5th when the band is inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at L.A.'s Microsoft Theater. This includes former guitarist Andy Taylor, who was with the band throughout its original classic run through 1985 and a brief reunion in the 2000's. Also set to play with the band is Missing Persons co-founder Warren Cuccurullo, who was the Duran Duran's guitarist and a key songwriter from 1986 through 2000.

Duran Duran frontman Simon LeBon, who along with the band has been passed over for induction every year since 2006, admitted he had a change of heart over what the Rock Hall actually symbolizes: "John (Taylor) and I, we inducted Roxy Music into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. It was a great event. It was a wonderful event -- and it was something that we thought, 'Yeah, I totally get this.' On top of that, I think it's honestly, it's the closest thing you're ever going to get to a rock n' roll knighthood."

LeBon revealed the news of all the members agreeing to appear and said the band is still figuring out how to fit both guitar legends the into one performance: "Well, we've been in touch with them, I think we're all going to get up onstage together and play some music. That's what we're aiming for. I'm not sure they'll be onstage together at the same time as each other -- but certainly, we'll have some time with each of them up there."

LeBon spoke to Rolling Stone and discussed the possible Rock Hall induction setlist: "We've got Andy on the first three albums, so you have songs like 'Hungry Like The Wolf' and 'Rio,' and 'Planet Earth.' (Warren) was a very important part of The Wedding Album, which had 'Ordinary World' and 'Come Undone' on it. We're not struggling for good songs, that's for sure."

Bono & The Edge Perform In Ukrainian Subway

On Sunday (May 8th), at the invitation from Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky, U2's Bono and The Edge performed an acoustic concert in the subway-turned-bomb shelter of Kyiv. Rolling Stone reported the pair performed "With Or Without You," "Desire," "Angel Of Harlem," "Vertigo," -- "and a rendition of Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me' that replaced the titular 'Me' with 'Ukraine.'"

Over the course of the performance, which fan-shot footage shows was professionally lit and filmed, various Ukrainian musicians-turned-soldiers joined the duo to sing along on stage.

During the show, Bono told the crowd, "The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom. We pray that you will enjoy some of that peace soon."

We caught up with Bono a while back and he explained why U2 remains as socially active as they are: "One thing I'm very sure about is that I am a spoiled-rotten rock star. I am over-paid, over-nourished, and over-dressed (laughter). And I'm sure the work that the band have done is some kind of Catholic guilt -- but it's working, so we'll continue with it."

Every family's journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is."

They continued, "We are overjoyed that our little girl is finally home, and just want to thank every Doctor, nurse and specialist at Rady Children's La Jolla and Cedar Sinai, Los Angeles, who were there selflessly every step of the way. The Rolling Stones have just posted three new tracks from its upcoming vault release, Live At The El Mocambo, 1977, which drops on Friday (May 13th.) The new tracks previewed from the band's legendary March 1977 Toronto club gigs are Exile On Main Street's "Tumbling Dice" and "Rip This Joint," and Black And Blue's "Hot Stuff."

Over 45 years since first hitting the road with the Rolling Stones, Ron Wood says that he and Keith Richards still possess a sixth sense about how to intertwine their guitar work onstage: "That was something that Keith and I have always luckily had from the start. We never planned, as such, what we are gonna do individually. We have a knack of if one goes this way, the other one will slide in this way. On a certain number, we don't even look at each other. If I wanna take the solo, I'll take it, right? And if he wants to take it, he'll take it."

The Rolling Stones' 14-stadium European run kicks off on June 1st in Madrid, Spain and plays through July 31st in Stockholm, Sweden.

An unauthorized Billy Joel biopic is currently in pre-production and will focus on his early days, according to Variety. The film, titled Piano Man, is being developed via Michael Jai White's Jaigantic Studios, with Adam Ripp set to write and direct the film. Ripp is the son of Joel's early manager Artie Ripp, whom he spent years trying to extricate himself from professionally. Jaigantic Studios has acquired the "life rights" of another early Joel manager Irwin Mazur and will base the story around that.

According to the report, "The biopic will follow Joel's early years -- from being discovered by Irwin Mazur, who managed the band the Hassles that Joel joined as a teenager, to his breakout performance in 1972 that captured the attention of Clive Davis."

Billy Joel is not involved in the project in any way, and according to a representative, "no rights in music, name/likeness or life story will be granted" to the project.

In 2020, Billy and wife Alexis have announced that their Joel Foundation would be making a series of donations amounting to $500,000 for aid and relief for the coronavirus pandemic. The couple issued a statement explaining, "Our first donation will be $500,000 in the form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The Joel Foundation also donated $25,000 to Greenwich Village's Smalls Jazz Club & Mezzrow. The club has created a nonprofit organization called SmallsLIVE Foundation for Jazz Art and Education.

Released in 2019 was the digital playlist, titled Live Through The Years, features 20 performances captured in concert between 1977 and 2006 -- a few of which have only been available via concert video sets. Among the deep dives featured on the set are: "Sleeping With The Television On," "Vienna," "You're My Home," "Get It Right The First Time," and "A Room Of Our Own."

In July 2015, Billy married longtime girlfriend Alexis Roderick with the couple welcoming their first child, daughter Della Rose, the following month. On October 22nd, 2018 Billy's third daughter, Remy Anne Joel, was born at Manhattan's New York University Hospital, weighing seven pounds, three ounces. Billy has a daughter -- 35-year-old musician Alexa Ray Joel -- from his second marriage to Christie Brinkley.

August 2018 marked the 25th anniversary since Billy Joel released his last studio rock album, River Of Dreams. The album, which peaked at Number One on the Billboard 200, featured the Top Three hit -- and Billy's last Top Ten hit to date -- "The River Of Dreams."

During Billy's quarter-century exile from releasing rock music, aside from three live albums, he composed the 2001 classical album Billy Joel: Fantasies & Delusions (Music For Solo Piano) and in 2007 recorded two "pop" songs, the big band-inspired "All My Life" -- which was produced by the late-Phil Ramone -- and the rocker "Christmas In Fallujah" featuring vocalist Cass Dillon.

In March 2011, Billy released the CD/DVD set Billy Joel: Live At Shea Stadium, featuring appearances by Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, Steven Tyler, Garth Brooks, and Tony Bennett. That November, Billy underwent successful bilateral hip replacement surgery.

Billy Joel always credits the unique upbringing he received growing up as a baby boomer on Long Island as the son of a German father and a British mother: "A lot of music being played in the house -- mostly classical music, when I was a kid. Broadway musicals, y'know, pop music from New York radio. (My) father would play piano, my mother would sing in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas; that's where my parents met. It was a Jewish family, although I wasn't brought up with any religious upbringing. I used to go to mass, ‘cause all my friends were Catholic. I thought that's what you did on a Sunday -- you went to mass, that's what everybody did. Um, so, interesting mix of things."

Although Billy is known as one of the top musicians in all of rock, he says that his musical limitations could actually be responsible for helping him creating his greatest songs: "I never really applied myself the way I should. I never practiced my scales. I'm limited, and in a way, I think my limitations have helped me as a pop music writer. Sometimes I'll paint myself into a corner, and I don't know how to get out, so I just come up with my own solution to get myself out of that corner. And that, in a way, is what may make my material original."

The late-Phil Ramone was Billy's closest musical confidante and produced such classic multi-platinum albums for Billy as The Stranger, 52nd Street, Glass Houses, Songs In The Attic, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man, and The Bridge. He told us shortly before he died in 2013 that Billy's was a multifaceted man: "But, y'know, he's a wonderful animal. He's just so smart. And of course he comes off playing this tough Long Island kid -- which is part of his background -- but the rest of him is just amazing. He's an amazing guy. Extremely intelligent and well read."

Despite his fans clamoring for a new album, Billy says that he's happy touring and playing his greatest hits and deep album cuts, but is equally content quietly writing instrumental music: "I guess these days I just think of myself as a classical composer. I have a piano at home and I write classical pieces -- I don't ever wanna call it classical pieces, it's piano music. They could be used for an orchestra; some of these things might end up being used for a movie soundtrack. I'm not even all that anxious to have them performed. Right now all I'm interested is just composing."

Wings drummer Denny Seiwell produced the early sessions for Billy's 1971 solo debut Cold Spring Harbor. He recalls being amazed at his talent years before the rest of the world discovered "Billy Joel": "I started producin' Billy out in Long Island. All I remember was Billy was just awesome. He was phenomenal. In fact one night we were having a problem, we couldn't get him to -- he really had unbelievable piano chops and we couldn't get him to slow this (sings piano riff). He wouldn't slow down, so we said, 'How 'bout we get you a bottle of booze, man?' So we got him a bottle of gin (laughs), and he sat it on the piano bench and he just started sluggin' away at this thing. We said, 'Just let him chill out for a little while. We'll slow him down.' And the more he drank, the faster he got!"

Over the past two decades, Billy's problems with alcohol popped up frequently in the press, resulting in his last stay at the Betty Ford Clinic in 2005. Two years before that, he appeared on NBC's Dateline and spoke candidly about his relationship with the bottle: "I can abuse alcohol if the demons get me. I'll go on a bender. It's happened to me before. That's why I went into rehab, I was on a binge, I was on a bender. And I said, 'This is stupid, I've got to stop.' Then I went and I did stop and I've learned to recognize what those signs are."

Billy Joel drew upon his high school years in Levittown, New York for his 1977 classic from The Stranger, "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" -- rated among his best by die-hards. He explained the song's genesis during his appearance on Inside The Actors Studio: "That song started out, the middle part was called 'The Ballad Of Brenda And Eddie.' The thing I was trying to get across, and I'm sure we all know, there were people who peaked a little too early in life. When we were in high school, there were the people we thought were so cool -- I thought, 'Man, I wish I was that guy!' With a perfect pompadour, he always had great clothes, he always had the coolest shoes, he always went out with the coolest girl. And then I saw him at the 10-year reunion, and this guy was like a caved-in ashtray. In high school, it was so important to be with the right crowd -- in my era, maybe it's the same in this era, I'm assuming there's a certain amount of this that still goes on. But they were my heroes, these people. But then I said -- 'that's not enough.'"

Billy Joel explained that it was written in the cards that barring a two year jaunt in L.A., playing in a piano bar -- Long Island was his natural habitat: "My perspective of things all come from a Long Island point of view. I've realized that. I've traveled all over the world, I've traveled a lot in the United States -- I wasn't really sure where I was gonna end up -- but the more I traveled, the more I felt this is where I'm from. I'm from this island that sticks out to the East of New York City. There really isn't a lot of other places like Long Island. Sure, there's a little bit of it in Jersey, a little bit of it in New England -- a little bit of it. But Long Island is an Island. We're isolated from everything else. We're with each other -- we all rub off on each other (laughs) for better or for worse, and that's what makes us Long Islanders."

Rob Halford Salutes Judas Priest Fans For Not Giving Up On Rock Hall Placement

Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford saluted the band's legion of fans who would not give up until Priest was firmly entrenched into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band, which has been eligible since 1999, was shortlisted to make the cut last year -- but ultimately came up short. Rob Halford told us that the band gaining entry this year in the Musical Excellence Award slot has as much to do with Priest's musicality as it does their fans' allegiance and belief in the group: "I've been watching those fan votes ever since the Rock Hall voting began -- like I've done every time. And it was such a joy to see the consistency of the fans around the world. 'Cause a lot of people forget that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it is essentially supported with heavy metal maniacs voting for Priest from all around the world. So, to see that, to see those votes; it's a hell of a lot of people. That's a lot of fans really wanting this for the band, y'know, really supporting this opportunity for us."

Judas Priest kicks off their 32-date European tour on June 3rd in Gdańsk, Poland at Stocznia Gdańska.

BTS To Release Anthology Album Next Month

BTS will release their new anthology album, Proof, next month.

The music collection will celebrate the first nine years of the supergroup's journey since their debut.

The album will include various known tracks and three new tracks. Look for Proof, to be released on June 10.

In other BTS news…

BTS could be given exemption from military service in South Korea. Under the present Military Service Act, all able-bodied Korean men must enlist for roughly two years of military service before age 30.

During a press briefing, Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister, Hwang Hee, stated that - forcing globally recognized pop culture artists to halt their careers at their peak, in order to serve in the military, would cause a great loss. Not only to the country, but to the entire world.

If the exception is made, it would be deeply controversial in Korea, and opposed by many men who have already served.

BTS' oldest member, Jin, will turn 30 in December.

TL;DR:

  • BTS will release their new anthology album, Proof, on June 10.
  • It will include various known tracks and three new tracks.

Graham Nash Drops New Live Album, Estranged From His Children

Out today (May 6th) is Graham Nash's new concert collection -- Graham Nash: Live. The set is culled from four 2019 concerts where he performed his first two solo albums -- 1971's Songs For Beginners and its 1974 followup, Wild Tales, with a full band in their entirety.

We caught up with Nash and asked him if he had forgotten how powerful those songs were -- especially when shared with an audience: "No, I haven't forgotten about it, but it definitely came back to me. Many of those songs are incredibly relevant today. And it was amazing to me that a song, like 'Immigration Man,' or 'Chicago' or 'We Can Change The. . . ' y'know, or 'Military Madness'. . . I mean, I changed the beginning of my show because of what's going on in Ukraine. There's stuff going on in the world that everybody is aware of, everybody wants to escape the news of. There's incredibly brilliant, wonderful things being done by humanity -- at the same time as we're obliterating Mariupol in Ukraine. Destroyed the entire city."

While talking with The Guardian, Nash spoke about how his marriage to actress/writer Amy Grantham -- who's 40 years younger than him -- has ostracized himself from his three children whom he shared with second wife Susan Sennett. Not long after their divorce after four decades together, Sennett fell ill and died of cancer.

Nash spoke about the collapse of his relationship with his kids: "They didn't realize that I had divorced their mother, not them. So they don't want me in their lives, and. . . My daughter is a little friendlier than my boys. . . It's terrible. So I'm doing remarkably well considering everything. I don't know. People have to live their lives. People become who they are, and I realize my kids are not the people I thought they were, that my fatherly eyes glossed over their shortcomings."

When pressed if he sees a reconciliation with his family, Nash admitted frankly, "Actually I don't. And that might seem awfully strange as a father, but it's too painful. I can't live my life in pain. If they don't want me in their lives, that's their choice. I don't agree with it, but I will honor their choice."

Graham Nash klcks off his next string of dates on July 13th at Red Bank, New Jersey's Count Basie Center for the Arts.

Pat Benatar Happy Rock Hall Nod Acknowledges Long Career

Pat Benatar is as cool as ever. Although thrilled about her 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- she's a seasoned pro -- and has never judged her talent or art with the prizes its brought her.

In addition to Benatar, the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, and Eminem. This year's Musical Excellence Award will go to Judas Priest along with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Early Influence Awards will go to Harry Belafonte and Elizabeth Cotten, with Ahmet Ertegun Awards going to recording engineer, producer, and executive Jimmy Iovine, R&B singer and Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson, and attorney, Allen Grubman.

We caught up with Pat Benatar, who has been eligible for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 2004, and she shed light on how it feels to finally be given the nod: "I think the most fun for us is seeing how happy everybody is because they waited so long (to induct me). So, it's great to see the first DJ that ever played the song in Portland, Oregon -- y'know, he's happy today, too (laughs), so, it's kinda great. I don't know -- I'm sure you hear this all the time, I mean, it's not really something that you're thinking about all the time. . . I think it's Linda Ronstadt (that) had a quote that said, 'If you're doing this to win prizes, you're in trouble (laughs).' So, y'know, you're not thinkin' about this kinda stuff when you're makin' records and writin' songs and everything. But listen, it's really fun and it's great for it to finally happen. The work is being acknowledged today but the work has been there for 43 years, so it's the same work (laughs), y'know, so (laughs) -- it didn't change anything in that respect. Y'know, it's fun for everybody, so, I like it."

The 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on November 5th at L.A.'s Microsoft Theater and air at a later date on HBO and stream on HBO Max.

Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo next perform on May 22nd in Pompano Beach, Florida at Pompano Beach Amphitheater

Olivia Rodrigo Speaks Out About Abortion Rights

During her Washington, D.C. concert this week, Olivia Rodrigo spoke up about how she feels about abortion rights. She told her audience that she was heartbroken over the Supreme Court's potential decision to take away a woman's right to choose.

She said, "Our bodies should never be in the hands of politicians. I hope we can raise our voices to protect our right to have a safe abortion, which is a right that so many people before us have worked so hard to get."

Rodrigo was referring to a shocking Supreme Court leak of a draft opinion arguing that the landmark 1973 Roe V. Wade abortion ruling was "egregiously wrong from the start."

A number of other artists have also spoken out in support of abortion rights since Monday's leak, including Phoebe Bridgers, Halsey, and Gracie Adams.

Sammy Hagar Has High Hopes For Upcoming 'Crazy Times' Album

Sammy Hagar is particularly excited about his and the Circle's next album, titled Crazy Times. The "Red Rocker" spilled the beans on the new set to Forbes, and shed light on the sessions, which were helmed by country-based producer Dave Cobb -- who was most recently behind the boards for Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators' latest set, 4.

Hagar explained, "We're gonna have a new record coming out in the next couple of months, we're gonna release the first single. We made a record called Crazy Times with Dave Cobb. It's the best record I ever made in my life, but I hate to even say that because that's what everyone says. But I'm telling you from my heart, it's the best record I ever made in my life."

He went on to talk about how they formulated how the record would sound: "David Cobb said, 'I'm not gonna do anything that even sounds anything remotely country on this record, 'cause I wanted to make an Americana record a little bit less hard rock . . . I wanna make the record I grew up on, I wanna hear you and Mikey (Anthony) sing like you did in 'Top Of The World,' with Van Halen. That's what we're gonna get out of you guys.' And he'd come up and squeeze it out of us. . . (this album is) a hybrid of everything I've ever been involved with musically." There's been no street date announced for Sammy Hagar & The Circle's Crazy Times album.

Sammy Hagar admitted to us that although he fell in love with singing at an early age -- he's pretty much the definition of a reluctant performer: "I just liked it. It felt good and it felt natural. It's still not comfortable to me -- I'm not a comfortable singer/entertainer; even though I'm more of an entertainer, y'know, when I get on stage, I turn into an entertainer. But it's very uncomfortable for me. And I'm always runnin' around backstage, a nervous wreck until I get out there. But, other than that -- I like it."

Sammy Hagar & The Circle perform on Saturday (May 7th) at Laughlin, Nevada at the Laughlin Event Center.
