Report: Guns N' Roses Recorded Tracks With Easy-E

Evidentially there are several complete collaborations between N.W.A.'s late-Eric "Eazy-E" Wright and Guns N' Roses. Rockthembells.com spoke with Easy-E's longtime friend and associate Arnold "Bigg A" White, who shed light on the unlikely team-up, recalling, "There is unreleased music still out there. We know for a fact that he had two or three or four reels in his car when he went to the hospital. Those reels came up missing. He had songs with Slash from Guns N' Roses -- he had songs with Guns N' Roses on those reels."

White went on to explain that the elements to the collaboration remains strewn all over the place: "Those reels have been found 'cause they wound up in Canada. That's a whole other story, but what happened to them (since), I don't know. I don't know if the estate got them, but there is unreleased music, and (rapper and producer) Yella has some, I know for a fact that there is some unreleased acapella vocals, that he was working on some records with a couple of producers I worked with and last I heard was that they were up in (Dr.) Dre's studio."

Eazy-E died from AIDS-induced pneumonia on March 26th, 1995 at the age of 30.

The Police Releasing Expanded 'Every Breath You Take' Record Store Day Single

The Police will take part in Record Store Day 2023 (April 22nd) with a special double-single release of 1983's "Every Breath You Take." The double-gatefold sleeve package includes the original UK single and a bonus disc featuring the extremely rare track -- "Every Bomb You Make" -- an exclusive version of the Police classic, with then-new lyrics, re-recorded specially at the time for the British comedy show, Spitting Image.

The set also includes the rare instrumental backing track for "Every Breath You Take," along with the gatefold featuring, "two color-printed inner bags featuring the original A&M label's 'company' sleeve design." The new Record Store Day release is pressed on limited edition heavyweight red & yellow colored vinyl and was remastered and cut at Abbey Road Studios, London.

Sting revealed back in the day that the legendary hits off the Police's 1983 final album, Synchronicity, had a direct connection to the world of 007: "I wrote 'Every Breath You Take," and 'King Of Pain,' and 'Wrapped Around Your Finger,' in a very short space of time in Jamaica. In a house that belonged to Ian Fleming, who's the man who wrote all the James Bond books. And I would sit at his desk every night and compose these songs -- they came out very quickly. It's a very, um, magical kind of place in the north coast of Jamaica."

The 2023 Record Store Day release of "Every Breath You Take" consists of:

Disc One - original UK seven-inch single (red vinyl)
Side A - "Every Breath You Take"
Side B - "Murder By Numbers"

Disc Two - bonus disc (yellow vinyl)
Side A - "Every Bomb You Make"
Side B - "Every Breath You Take (Instrumental)"

Flashback: The Beatles' 'Let It Be' Hits Number One

It was 53 years ago today (April 11th, 1970) that the Beatles' "Let It Be," hit Number One. The track, which was the group's final single in America prior to breaking up, was actually over a year old, having been recorded on January 31st, 1969, during the group's ill-fated "Get Back" sessions, which were originally conceived as a TV special chronicling the Beatles' stage comeback. The sessions instead became the Let It Be movie, which revealed the disintegration of the band. "Let It Be," along with its companion piece "The Long And Winding Road," was written by Paul McCartney in late-1968 near the end of the Beatles' "White Album" sessions. He began writing the song after waking from a dream featuring his mother, Mary, who had died of cancer when he was 14.

McCartney recalled the song in his 1997 official biography Many Years From Now, saying, "Mother Mary makes it a quasi-religious thing, so you can take it that way. I don't mind. I'm quite happy if people want to use it to shore up their faith. I think it's great to have faith of any sort, particularly in the world we live in... Looking back on the Beatles' work I'm glad that most of it was a positive force. . . they're such symbols of optimism and hopefulness."

The song featured McCartney on piano and lead vocal, John Lennon on bass and backing vocal, George Harrison on lead guitar and backing vocal, Ringo Starr on drums, and Billy Preston on organ.

Later, in April 1969 and again in January 1970, McCartney overdubbed an electric piano, additional percussion, and vocals with his wife Linda and Apple recording artist Mary Hopkin.

Two months after the song was released as a single, a version of the song remixed by producer Phil Spector, featuring a horn section and a new Harrison guitar solo, was issued on the Let It Be album.

Although the Beatles' late-producer George Martin was largely absent for the production work recorded in the Apple basement during the Let It Be, with Glyn Johns manning the boards for the sessions, Martin was hurt that the band entrusted an outsider like Spector to compile the album rather than himself: "When I heard that John and George had taken the tapes out of Abbey Road (Studios) and given them to Phil Spector to make them work, I felt a betrayal, really."

George Martin received a producer's credit for all three chart-toppers (and their respective B-sides) culled from the Let It Be sessions: "Get Back," "Let It Be," and "The Long And Winding Road." Glyn Johns' name was left off all three singles, and only managed to garner a "thanks" on the back of the Let It Be album.

Despite not getting the credit due him, after all these years, Glyn Johns harbors no bad feelings: "Life's full of disappointments and you have to get over them. I got over that really quickly and left it behind in the dust. It's fine. It wasn't like I was sitting around waiting for them when they rang the phone in the first place and it wasn't like I was sittin' around waiting for my career to be bolstered by them thereafter. And though it was really disappointing, ‘cause I got on great with everybody. Y'know, we had a really good working relationship, I thought. Things don't always work out and you just move on and that's what I did. It's the way things went. Listen, it would've been very nice!" SOUNDCUE

The "Let It Be" single and album was released in the aftermath of John Lennon telling the group in September 1969 that he "wanted a divorce" and was leaving the Beatles: McCartney recalled that although it would be almost seven months before he announced that the band had split, Lennon had already moved on: "After that statement, we then thought, 'Well, give it a couple of months. We may decide. . . I mean it's a little bit of a big act to just breakup like that, let's just give it a couple of months (laughs).' And we talked for a couple of months, and it just never was going to be on. Y'know, I think, largely looking back on it, I think it was mainly John needed the new direction that he just went into headlong, y'know, helter skelter, he went right in there, to do all sorts of stuff he'd never done before -- with Yoko. And, y'know, you can't blame him, 'cause he was that kind of guy, who really wanted to live life and do stuff. Y'know, there was just no holding back with John."

The B-Side of "Let It Be" -- "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" -- featured a backing track recorded in May 1967 during the Magical Mystery Tour sessions with the late Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones playing saxophone. Lennon and McCartney had added their vocals in April 1969.

"Let It Be" ended Simon & Garfunkel's six-week-run at Number One with "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and on April 11th, 1970, the day after McCartney announced he was leaving the Beatles, "Let It Be" topped the chart for the first of two weeks.

Although the Beatles' record label continued to release compilation albums and issue singles throughout the '70s -- including the follow-up Number One single "The Long And Winding Road" -- "Let It Be" stands as the last official single release before the band broke up.

Beginning with Wings' final tour in 1979, "Let It Be" has been one of the Beatles evergreens included in all of McCartney's solo setlists. "Let It Be" has been performed on all of his world tours and at such notable gigs as 1979's The Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea, 1985's Live Aid, his 1999 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and 2001's The Concert For New York City.

Graham Nash Reveals David Crosby Had Covid At Time Of Death

Graham Nash revealed that his late-partner David Crosby died in his sleep while battling another bout with Covid, according to Rolling Stone. Nash, who was publicizing the May 19th release of his latest solo set titled Now, on the Kyle Meredith With podcast, spoke frankly about Crosby's passing last January 19th.

Nash explained, "He was rehearsing for a show to do in Los Angeles with a full band. After three days of rehearsals, he felt a little sick. And he'd already had Covid, and he had Covid again. And so he went home and decided that he would take a nap, and he never woke up. But he died in his bed, and that is fantastic."

He went on to say, "I mean, the fact that he made it to 81 was astonishing. But (his death) was a shock. It was kind of like an earthquake, y'know? You get the initial shock and then you figure out that you survived. But these aftershocks kept coming up, and they're diminishing in size as I go along."

Regarding their strained relationship over the past half-decade, Nash revealed, "I'm very pleased that David and I were getting closer towards the end. He had a good life. I mean, what incredible music he made. He was a fantastic storyteller. I loved him dearly. In looking back at what separated us, it was just foolish stuff, really. The music is the most important part of our relationship."

A while back, Graham Nash told us that the connection between David Crosby and himself always led to the two making music together, whether or not Stephen Stills or Neil Young were involved: "David and I had always had a musical affinity for each other, we always continue to play with each other whenever there's a spare moment. So it wasn't because CSNY wasn't happening, that me and David decided we would do that, we were doing it as well as."

Joe Alwyn And Taylor Swift Call It Quits After Six Years

Entertainment Tonight broke the news Saturday (April 9th), adding that the split was amicable.

A source told the show, "the relationship had just run its course. It's why Alwyn hasn't been spotted at any shows."

Fans first began speculating about the split online late last month when the 33-year-old singer updated her Eras Tour setlist by replacing the folklore track about soul mates, "Invisible String," with a song about lost love, "The 1."

Geddy Lee Publishing Autobiography Later This Year

With little fanfare, Rush's Geddy Lee officially announced on his Geddyimages Instagram account, his autobiography, titled My Effin' Life, will be published on November 14th. Other than posting the cover sleeve to the memoir, Lee added only, "More to come."

Lee had previously recalled he had begun working on the memoir during lockdown. Back in 2021 he posted on his social media pages "There were some shiny silver linings to be found at home: teaching my grandson the finer points of baseball and birdwatching, tending to my pups (one of whom was quite ill) and spending the evenings with my lovely better half, glass of Armagnac in hand, as we watched every European mystery show ever produced. Oh, and another thing: I began to write. Words, that is."

Lee went on to explain that the long shadow of Rush drummer Neil Peart's 2020 death played a part in inspiring the upcoming tome: "My friend and collaborator on the Big Beautiful Book Of Bass, Daniel Richler, saw how I was struggling in the aftermath of Neil's passing, and tried coaxing me out of my blues with some funny tales from his youth, daring me to share my own in return. So I did -- reluctantly at first, but then remembering, oh yeah, I like wrestling with words."

Despite all the years he's clocked in writing, recording, and touring, Geddy Lee finds himself still learning new things about the business all the time: "It's awfully naive to think that you've learned everything. You're always learning. There's always something else to learn. There's always something to improve. It's not unlike any other aspect of your life, y'know, any other endeavor. Nobody's finished as an artist, y'know, at a certain age, (when) you go, 'Well, that's it. I now know everything, and I'm a complete artist.'"

Jonas Brothers Debut Two New Tracks On Saturday Night Live

The Jonas Brothers debuted two new tracks on Saturday Night Live this weekend (April 8th).

The trio gave chorus-backed performances of "Walls" and "Waffle House."

They told Rolling Stone in a statement, "Growing up, we would go to Waffle House after shows, and it became our sanctuary. It was the place we dreamt up ideas, the place where we worked through our problems together, and the place where we finally realized we could find our way through anything as long as we came together."

While they were in New York, the group also made a surprise appearance at Lewis Capaldi's Radio City Hall gig Thursday (April 6th) night. Video shared by Rolling Stone shows the brothers appeared during the encore to perform "Love Bug."

Ousted Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist Unimpressed With New Music

Ousted Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer admits he's been far from impressed with the music the band has recorded without him, according to Consequence Of Sound. Guitarist John Frusciante rejoined in late-2019 to perform on the band's next two albums, Unlimited Love and Return Of The Dream Canteen, both of which were released in 2022. Klinghoffer now performs as part of Eddie Vedder's side band, the Earthlings -- as well as a touring member of Pearl Jam.

While appearing on the Brazilian podcast 5 Notas, Klinghoffer admitted he couldn't help comparing the unreleased music he was creating with the band prior to being forced out to the music featured on their new albums with Frusciante: "It's tough (listening to their new music), only because I honestly think we were doing cooler music. . . I never want to sound negative about anyone doing music -- but I was shocked when I heard their new record."

When asked about the band's latest music recorded with John Frusciante, Klinghoffer admitted: "I don't think I finished (listening to) the second one. I was trying to cram it in once before leaving on a plane, and I got as far as maybe the ninth song, and I don't think I listened to the rest."

Back in the day, upon joining the Chili Peppers, drummer Chad Smith raved about Klinghoffer's playing style: "Josh is not a hit you over the head kind of guy. He comes at you like a fog, y'know? It kind of envelopes you and he's like a sonic architect more than like a riff guy. But he comes up with the coolest, smart, cool -- like he can rock hard, no doubt about it. Josh can get his rock on. But Josh is an incredible musician."

Suga Drops Track Ahead of D-Day's Release

Suga released the track "People Pt.2 (feat. IU)" Friday (April 7th), ahead of his upcoming first official solo album D-Day.

The BTS singer shared how the song was born in the accompanying music video, explaining, "This song was written when I couldn't do anything due to Covid-19 and when I thought 'I lost everything'. So it conveys the message I wanted to tell myself."

D-Day drops April 21st.

Flashback: 'Frampton Comes Alive!' Tops The Charts

It was 47 years ago this week (April 10th through 16th, 1976) that Peter Frampton's fifth album, the blockbuster, Frampton Comes Alive! hit Number One on the Billboard album charts for 10 nonconsecutive weeks. The album featured the hit singles "Show Me The Way" (#6), "Baby I Love Your Way" (#12), and "Do You Feel Like We Do" (#10) -- all of which, amazingly, remain in constant rotation on classic rock radio. In January 2001, for its 25th anniversary, Frampton reissued a remixed and expanded version of Frampton Comes Alive! -- including four tracks that were not included on the original double album -- "Nowhere's Too Far (For My Baby)," "Just The Time Of Year," "White Sugar," and a radio performance of "Day's Dawning."

Although Frampton Comes Alive -- which has sold over eight million copies to date -- took Frampton and the rock world by storm, since leaving Humble Pie in 1971, he'd slowly been making substantial strides in his solo career, inch-by-inch: "My studio albums had a cult following (laughs), a small cult (laughs) to start with and building up to the Frampton record; the one in '75, which included 'Baby I Love Your Way' and 'Show Me The Way.' And that one did sell a lot more -- more than the other three put together -- Wind Of Change, Frampton's Camel, and Something's Happening. I was starting to do reasonably well, but still haven't really broken through in the way that, y'know, the next record we hoped would be gold."

Frampton told us that back during the original Frampton Comes Alive era, his legendary black Gibson Les Paul was a warhorse onstage and unlike today -- when due to various tunings, he can go through half a dozen guitars during a single show -- the guitar had to handle everything Frampton threw at it: "We didn't have more than one guitar in those days, y'know. If you wanted another guitar, you sold the one you had to get another one (laughs). So it was only. . . I think I had a white backup Les Paul -- that was about it. And nobody really had backups of things -- that was it. I think if there was different tuning for 'Nowhere's Too Far (For My Baby)' I would do it before the number onstage by myself. I don't tune myself anymore; I have someone I pay to do that (laughs) -- fancy schmancy, yeah!"

Frampton recalled to us the precise moment in 1976 -- when out of the blue -- he realized that he was rock's latest mega-superstar: "A record signing in Detroit when the live album just came out. I had no bodyguards or anything like that, and just, y'know, a limo driver and me; that was it and we just go to this store. And they expected 150 people for me to sign Comes Alive when it'd just come out. Of course, it was pandemonium and the place, they had no secur. . . well, relatively no security there. And I remember having to fight to the limo -- we had to abandon the signing because it got way out of control and there have got to be (laughs), I don't know 5,000 people. It was ridiculous."

We asked Peter Frampton to recall the moment when the live album became almost bigger than him: "The day that my manager called and said, 'Guess what?' I said, 'Tell me.' He said, 'We're Number One.' I remember going to a party for ELO and Stanley Sheldon's wife, Judy, just went over to me and said, 'Peter, do you realize that everyone in this room is staring at you?' This was something new and no one was paying attention to ELO, so obviously I went over to them and as I went over, it seemed like the whole room moved with me. That was what my life was going to be like from then on, for quite a few years."

Frampton's former label chief, A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss, remembered the post-Comes Alive! period as the beginning of Frampton spreading himself too thin, beginning to wear out his welcome with fans, and ultimately heading for a career meltdown: "I think the year pretty much exhausted Peter. I think he worked so hard and did so many things; y'know, he wanted to remember the disc jockeys, he wanted to remember the press. Y'know, it's a lot of emotion when you put on shows in front of 200,000 people, and he never took any time off -- and I think it took it's toll and he got pretty exhausted. And so, I don't know if I could've said anything or done anything, but this was the way it was. People were hungry for him and he answered their call."

Frampton told us that the multiplatinum success of Frampton Comes Alive! only five years into his solo career, put a great strain on him artistically, and at a time when he desperately needed guidance on how to handle his career -- it was nowhere to be found: "As (writer) Cameron Crowe put it, 'It was like Peter was strapped to the nose-cone of a rocket, he went through the ceiling of the sky, got out, stood there and realized there was nobody else there at all. He was totally alone.' And that pretty much sums up the way I felt."

In 1995, Peter Frampton released Frampton Comes Alive II. In 2011, he embarked on the massively successful Frampton Comes Alive 35! tour, in which he performed the classic live album in its entirety before playing a whole other set of newer material.

John Regan, Peter Frampton's bassist for over 30 years died on April 7th at the age of 71. Regan, who performed and recorded with Frampton from 1979 to 2010, was also a member of Ace Frehley's Frehley's Comet, had a long and distinguished career recording and touring with the likes of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, David Lee Roth, Billy Idol, Dave Edmunds, Bonnie Tyler, Robin Trower, John Waite, and many more.

Peter Frampton posted a tribute on social media, which read:

There might only be a handful, if that, of people who come into your world and truly enrich your life. I have lost one of my closest buddies. He certainly enriched my life because of the person and the great player he was.

John Regan was the best of us. He went out of his way to help people when things weren't right. It didn't matter who you were, prince or pauper. I know there are many of you out there who knew him. He was a friend to all. Always musically inspiring and one of the funniest people on the planet.

I love you my brother you will be missed by so many, rest in peace.

Flashback: Paul McCartney Quits The Beatles

It was 53 years ago today (April 10th, 1970) that Paul McCartney's departure from the Beatles was made public, in effect announcing to the world what many fans had suspected over the past six months -- the Beatles had broken up. McCartney's statements regarding the end of his songwriting partnership with John Lennon, along with his wish to record apart from Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, came as part of a question-and-answer sheet included with press copies of his debut solo album, which was simply titled McCartney.

The news had first leaked out three days prior to that. McCartney's brother in-law and attorney John Eastman let McCartney's break with the band slip while announcing plans for McCartney's plans for an animated film of the British animated character Rupert the Bear and the upcoming release of McCartney's debut album.

In the Q&A for the press, which was actually written entirely by McCartney, he asked himself several pointed questions about the future of the group. McCartney explained his reasons for going solo, citing "business and musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family." McCartney went on to issue what most fans read as the ultimate death knell to the Beatles: "I do not foresee a time when the Lennon & McCartney partnership will be active again in songwriting."

In truth, the group had been dormant since Lennon privately announced his split to McCartney and Starr during a business meeting the previous September. By all accounts, George Harrison was not present for the announcement. Lennon ended the meeting by revealing to the pair that he wanted "a divorce" from the group. Tensions had been building between the Beatles since their return from India in the spring of 1968. And a year later, when Lennon, Harrison and Starr out-voted McCartney into hiring manager Allen Klein to run their company Apple Corps, the rift began to deepen.

True to his decision, Lennon didn't attend what turned out to be the group's final recording session on January 3rd, 1970, when the Beatles taped Harrison's song "I Me Mine."

In the months that followed Lennon's private announcement, the Beatles gave interviews in which they all deliberately refrained from announcing the split. That February, nearly five months after quitting the group, Lennon told Rolling Stone that, "We still might make Beatles product. We just need more room. The Beatles are just too limited."

That next month, both Starr and Harrison spoke to Britain's New Musical Express, with Starr stating that, "I've got things to do, George has things to do, and Paul has his solo album to come, and John has his peace thing. We can't do everything at once. Time will tell." Harrison added that, "Say we've got unity through diversity. . . We had to find ourselves individually, one day."

George Harrison told us in 1995 that the Beatles' split in 1970 was a completely liberating experience for him as an artist: "The situation at that time, the Beatles had, y'know, gone past the 'sell by' date or whatever you call it. Y'know, it's kinda like the Beatles had sort of finished, y'know? Everybody was. . . We were all tired of that, and so it was kind of exciting, the fact that I had all these songs -- been collecting for over a period of time, and I was gonna be able to get an album out and release all this stuff so I can get on with my life, basically. Most of these songs were written over a couple of years prior to, actually, '70."

Shortly after the split, John Lennon explained that apart from the music, the Beatles shared an intense and deep relationship with one another: "It takes a lot to live with for four people over and over for years and years, which is what we did. And we called each other every name under the sun, we got to blows, we've been through the whole damn show. We know where we're at -- we still do. We've been through the mill together for more than 10 years, y'know? We've been through our therapy together many times, y'know?"

Ringo Starr shed light on the slow build-up to the Beatles break-up: "Y'know, I think it shows as an absolute fact that we were going different places, y'know? The energy for the Beatles was waning. We put in a thousand percent, and then it was dwindling now, to 'Oh dear, do we have to turn up? We have to do that thing again? I wanna do this, and John wants to do that, and George was off. . .' Y'know people were -- We had families."

Paul McCartney says that both fans and the press have incorrectly pegged him as the villain in the "Fab Four" breakup: "Wrong, wrong, sorry. It wasn't me. It was John. What actually happened was: The group was getting very tense; it was looking like we were breaking up. One day we had a meeting, I came in and it was all Apple and business and Allen Klein and it was getting very hairy and no one was really enjoying themselves. It was. . . we'd forgotten the music bit -- it was just business. I came in one day, and I said, 'I think we should get back on the road -- small band, go and do the clubs, sod it, let's get back to square one, let's remember what we're all about. Let's get back.' And John's actual words were, 'I think you're daft. And I wasn't gonna tell ya, I'm breaking the group up.' He said, 'It feels good -- it feels like a divorce.' And he just sat there and our jaws just dropped."

Ringo Starr believes that no band can expect to carry on indefinitely as a thriving artistic unit: "The lifespan of any band, really, is, like eight years, because by then, y'know, you were 20 when you started. Early-‘20s, you're energized and suddenly you're 30 and, ‘Y'know, I wanna play the blues!'"

In December 1970, Lennon spoke about McCartney's announcement, telling Rolling Stone that "We were all hurt that he didn't tell us what he was going to do. . . A lot of people knew I left. I was a fool not to do what Paul did, which was use it to sell a record. I wasn't angry. He's a good PR man, I mean he's about the best in the world . . . he really knows how to do a job."

McCartney says that the split from the group sent him into a huge depression for several months: "I was quite broken up by the end of the Beatles. I'd been trying to hold them together, but it was something that wasn't to be. So, y'know, I went into a bit of a depression after that. And I'm normally quite optimistic, but, y'know, I'd just lost the best job in the world, and anyone who's just even ever lost a job knows how that feels."

During his last TV interview in April 1975, John Lennon told Tomorrow Show host Tom Snyder that the Beatles broke up simply because they had grown stale: "We didn't breakup because we weren't friends, we just broke up out of sheer boredom, y'know? And boredom creates tension. It was not going anywhere. We'd stopped touring, and we just said 'time to make an album.' Y'know, the same four of us, we'd be looking at each other and playing the same licks. We were very good friends and we'd known each other since we were 15, y'know? And we got over all the actual fighting."

Although the split cemented the fact that the Beatles would no longer record as a single unified group, in December 1970 McCartney sued Lennon, Harrison and Starr to formally dissolve their business partnership. His suit ultimately put all the monies earned by the group in escrow for the next five years. The Beatles formal partnership stretched on until early 1975.

Their business problems carried on through the next 20 years before all their interpersonal lawsuits were settled. Today, the group's company, Apple Corps, is jointly owned by McCartney, Starr and the estates of Lennon and Harrison, and handles all past and future Beatles business.

In 1999 McCartney recalled the split for his Wingspan project, saying that, "It doesn't matter who broke the Beatles up -- the Beatles were ready to break up. We'd come full circle and now we had to get on with something new, all of us."

In the years following the group's split, McCartney went on to become the most commercially successful of the four ex-Beatles. Since 1970, McCartney has scored 22 Top Ten hits, including nine Number Ones, seven Number One albums, nine Grammy Awards, and two Oscar nominations.

McCartney returned to the stage in 1972 with Wings. Although his initial solo tours excluded any Beatles material from the concert setlists, by Wings' final tours he was including a handful of Beatles songs in his shows.

Since his return to the road in 1989 after a decade of only a handful of performances, McCartney's live shows have been dominated by Beatles material, most of which the band had never performed live.

Beginning in 2010, to the delight of many fans, McCartney began delving deeper into his classic Wings catalogue.

Flashback: The Beach Boys Record 'California Girls'

It was 58 years ago today (April 6th, 1965) that the Beach Boys began recording "California Girls." The song, which was the group's most ambitious recording up until then, featured a soaring orchestral production by the group's leader and producer Brian Wilson, alongside lyrics co-written by singer Mike Love.

Wilson wrote the music to the chorus during a dinner party in early 1965, and then enlisted the help of Los Angeles' top session players rather than use the band on the recording, as he was becoming accustomed to doing. Although the Beach Boys' vocals wouldn't be added until June 4th, on April 6th, he led the "California Girls" session at Hollywood's Western Recorders. Wilson has stated numerous times over the years that the backing track to "California Girls" is his favorite of all his Beach Boys productions.

The track itself was a far cry from the group's first single, 1961's "Surfin'," which only featured a double bass, an acoustic guitar, and a trash can as percussion. "California Girls" utilized drums, piano, vibes, assorted percussion, three guitars, both an electric and a double bass, three saxophones, a trumpet, and an organ, not to mention six-part harmony vocals -- all arranged by Wilson.

Shortly before his death in 2017, longtime fan Tom Petty explained that especially during his '60s heyday, Brian Wilson's musical vision in the studio was unparalleled in rock: "You really have to admire him as an artist for just having that kind of vision. 'Cause, it's y'know, anyone that makes records knows it's very hard to think that far ahead. Y'know, just to book all those guys for the session! Right? You're thinking pretty far ahead. You're really visualizing sound long before it's actually appeared if you call 19 guys down to the room."

There is some debate as to whether Wilson composed the song's signature introduction, or its main melody, during his first LSD trip earlier that year. "California Girls" was Wilson's first major production since quitting the road the previous December, after he suffered a nervous breakdown while on tour.

Beach Boys historian Jon Stebbins who authored the definitive biographies on the group's Dennis Wilson and David Marks says that while on tour, the farther Brian Wilson was away from home and the recording studio, the more miserable he became: "Brian pouted the whole time. He didn't wanna be out there. Y'know Brian was really depressed when he was out on the road, and he was basically on the phone talking to his girlfriend back home all the time. While the rest of them were out having fun."

The song marked the first vocal appearance of the group's newest member, Wilson's permanent on-stage replacement Bruce Johnston.

Mike Love told us that although the Beach Boys are frequently saluted for their progressive work on such studio albums as Pet Sounds, Smile, Sunflower, and Holland, it's their early pop hits that's remained their bread and butter: "Those are the pillars of our success. That's the basis of our popularity to today, because even if their parents hadn't met yet in the '60s, they'll still have the Beach Boys on their iPods. Groups like the Beatles and the Beach Boys -- and maybe the Motown groups -- I mean, that's some seriously great music."

Nearly 20 years later, Wilson talked about "California Girls" in a 1993 interview with Capitol Records, recalling, "Everybody was up. The whole gang was there. It became my favorite session. The intro to this song is the greatest piece of music that I've ever written. I was looking for an introduction that would be totally different to the rest of the song, but would lead into it. The song was a big record for us, but I really never liked anything but the intro."

"California Girls" was originally issued on the group's Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) album on July 5th, 1965, and was released as single on July 12th. "California Girls" eventually peaked at Number Three, kept from the Top spot by the other massive hits from the Summer of '65, Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" at Number Two, and the Beatles' Number One "Help!"

"California Girls" went on to become the Beach Boys' signature song. Starting in the early '70s, the group regularly used it as their opening number at concerts. Both Brian Wilson's band -- featuring Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin -- and the touring version of the Beach Boys featuring Mike Love and Bruce Johnston still include the song in every performance.
